Good Job Angelic I knew you would get it done. Sometimes we need a couple days off just to rest our sore joints/muscles.

I finished W7D1 earlier today which meant I finally did my 20 minute run! I kept track of how far I went during the run only and I hit 2.7km. Which means as long as I can double my time I should get that 5K done in under 40...so much easier said than done.

I'm heading out of town tomorrow night until Sunday. I'm not expecting to get any running done while I'm gone so my plan is to redo this day next Monday and hope I don't lose too much speed/stamina.

Good Luck to everybody the next couple of days and I'll be back next week.

So proud of each and every one of us!
Hope you are feeling better! Don't push yourself too hard when you get back to running, your lungs could be sore a bit longer even if you feel better.

I've researched the causes and there's such a range that it's hard to speculate on what exactly it is. Right now I don't think it's super serious. I'm closely monitoring it though. I really don't want to stop now
3k already?! OMG you are doing so good! What speed are you running at? You may want to take it easy while you are getting the hip pain. It could be anything from your shoes to your pace or something else, just be careful!

So I went and rode the recumbent bike until a different one opened up... Not ideal, but whatevs

I have committed to a 5k color run in September, and I want to be able to run the whole damn thing. I am going to do this dammit!

You guys are all so awesome and such an inspiration. I have been lurking here for weeks

Lurk all you want, Silverfire!! Don't worry about the breaks, take them as you need them. Better than hurting yourself. You should be in great shape for September!

I'm not gonna be able to run today (bad weather). It's supposed to be nice outside tomorrow so I'll go for sure. I'm a bit nervous since I haven't run since Thursday, but I didn't want to risk getting a bad injury. My thigh muscle and my knee no longer hurt so that's good.

It went really well too. I ran 3.59 km total so I'm slowly getting closer to 5K. And I didn't feel any pain in my knee or thigh so all is good. I'm glad I took a few days off.
Next up is the 22 minutes run!!!
Great job, Angelic!! Glad you aren't hurting anymore, sometimes a break can be good even though mentally it drives us crazy. Good luck on the 22!

Have a great trip, changergirl! I'm only doing 2.4 miles (including the warm-up and cooldown walks) so I'm not running far at all in my 28 minutes (plus 10 walking) but I don't want to push myself on the speed too much yet. We'll get there!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Can't even believe I'm done with W8D2, I know I always say that but it's true! I amaze myself every single time I run. It did seem like forever for the halfway point to arrive though! My right thigh was starting to get a Charlie horse but somehow I shook it off. I was so afraid I was going to have to stop running (I haven't yet in all this time, what a miracle!)
One more day this week and then it's the final stretch!! Then I have to figure out what I'm going to do next to improve my time and distance, with all of you of course!!
Hello, all of you lovelies! I finished W5D1 today - it was good, i kept a good pace, my only regret is i went out running in the evening in stead of in the morning.
Sounds like, MSEMDEE , Elvis and Changergirl and the sweet Angelic Fruitcake are leading the running pack into the later and harder weeks of the program! An inspiring team to follow!
I wish all the girls in the beginning half of the program the same determination and great runs!
Oh man, I just got to say this thread makes me feel the coolest to be posting in. Oh yeh, I'm a runner, what! what!
Finished W2D1 today and felt really good and strong! I'm so excited about this! Feels so good to take it 1 step at a time.
Last week I stuck to walking at 3mph, and running at 4.2 mph. This week I am trying to up some of my walking to 3.2 mpg and running at 4.4 mph. I really want to be able to run a 5K (3.1) miles in 40 minutes. That would mean running at a 4.7 mph pace.
How does everyone else focus on their running speed? Or do you just take it in stride and see how it goes. I'm doing that for now, but I'm interested in how others approach it.
I'm sooooo slow, like painfully slow. The walkers on the road would pass me while I'm running!
I have never run for exercise in my life so I was very nervous and cautious when I started the C25K back in March. I decided to keep that pace every single week and still haven't increased it (my warm up and cool down walks are at 3.0 and my jog/run is at 3.8).
I spoke to my doctor about it this week and he was actually thrilled at my speeds. He said it's more important to build up my running time than my speed (i.e. I'll burn more calories being able to run longer even if it's at a slower pace since if I run too fast and have to stop sooner, what's the point?). He put it more eloquently but I understood what he meant!
Once I finish up Week 9 next week and have my own little celebration party for completing a huge NSV (I never thought I'd get past week 1 or 2, seriously, story of my life starting things and never finishing), I will work on being able to run longer and longer.
I hope that helps you!
100Mother: I know a lot of runners and they all told me not to worry about speed right now and that trying to go too fast could lead to an injury. Easier said than done I know! But the one time I tried to run faster is the one time I felt pain after. Last night I decided to just run at a comfortable pace and the run went very well. My running pace was pretty slow at 13:30 min./mile but oh well.
When I signed up for my 5K last Janury, my goal was also to run it under 40 minutes. The 5K is on September 22 and I don't know if I'll be able to reach that goal, but I'll try.
I found this site yesterday and thought it was very interesting: So you want to be a runner?
Elvis I agree with your approach. There are some days where I feel really good at the gym and I push, but I am not going to set some crazy goal of running 5 mph and burn myself out. I think the distance/time is way more important. Maybe after I complete the program I'll redo it upping the speed or something.
Thanks for your input, and congrats! You better come in and encourage us even after you are done Or else I'll track you down and...haha, I don't know. Spam your threads with carrots or something, lol.
Angelic Thanks! That is an awesome pace, and it is neat to hear someone has the same approximate goal. Keep up the good work!
Thanks for sharing the site. Those are some great tips!
Ladies! (I think we're all ladies?)
I just stumbled upon this page on Facebook: From Fat to Finish Line Virtual 5K. I signed up and it would be great if any of you could join me! You can run it or walk it (or run/walk it) anytime between July 15-21!
I just marked my calendar, Angelic!! It's 2 months from today. My cancer diagnosis anniversary is 7/13 so what a way to commemorate how far I have come in a year (losing over 100lbs and being able to RUN!).
I don't have a facebook account (I live off the grid ) but I am sure going to do this race with you!
Hi gang!!
Just dropping by to cheer you guys on! You're all doing such a great job!! I remember well how terrifying that first 20 minute run was, but I know you guys can do it!
Re: when do you get faster - there seems to be some general wisdom that when running, when you focus on running LONGER, you'll eventually help yourself get faster. For example, once your body can comfortably run 4 miles, 1 mile won't seem quite as hard...so you might find yourself running that 1 mile faster. Once you run 6 miles regularly, 3 miles would seem like an easy workout. Etc. so if your ultimate running goal is further than a 5K, just keep working at that and the speed will eventually follow. However, if you just want to get really good at a 5K, once you're comfortably running a 5K you can start working in some speed workouts. But for now, while you're on this program, I'd think its probably best to just focus on your smooth and steady progression.
Have an awesome run everyone
Hlthgrl, the pain could be from form, your shoes, injury, speed or any number of other reasons. Keep it in the back of your mind definitely and if it gets too bad you may need to rest it.
As for me, I just did W3D2 yesterday. I'm not gonna lie, I didn't love it. It felt hard for me to get started. I eventually got into it and did finish it though. I always look forward to my runs but I struggle to get started some days. I am determined to make it through! I guaranteed it by registering for 2 5Ks and pre-registering for another. They are all color run type 5Ks. I'm so excited! I can't wait to get to the point where I actually feel like a runner. I know I am one but I'm not feeling it yet.
Congrats to everyone else for plugging away at this!
Thanks for the encouragements! I also read that running longer will help going faster and it makes sense the way you explain it. Maybe I'll check out the 10K apps once I çan run 5K comfortably.
Registering for a 5K is what got this whole weight loss + C25K thing started for me. I love having a goal, it's so motivating.
