Feeling pretty good.
Herbals still doing ok.
Have to watch closer what I eat but i'll take it.
BF birthday yesterday. His mom brought cherry delight. I ate one piece.
Sugar was 207 this am. Took pills and boiled some cabbage to help bring my sugar down. I've used boiled cabbage before to drop my numbers as much as 100 points several hours after eating it. I just boil it in some water W/ some beef boulion in it. A registered nurse told her daughter to fix that for her diabetic husband when his numbers were high, years ago. I wonder if other types of veggies like cabbage would work. This works for me when my pills wouldn't move it.
Had a touch of the flu last week -stomache still a little touchy.
I think I will get out the juicer and see if cabbage juice works too as I am a little tired of boiled cabbage-get burned out on veggies period sometimes-maybe I can make a v-8 without all the salt.
Hope baby gets well-will be praying for him Deb, for God's angels to come and minister to him and put a shield of protection around him and all his loved ones-to be with them and the doctors to have wisdom in this little ones life. That He will let you know He is with you and little Wesley. God bless dear.
Hello, Does anyone buy the low carb Peanut Butter? (forgot who makes it)or is there something better I could get that tastes like Peanut Butter? Thank You
Hi, Carol. Blood sugar is pretty tricky. Mine has been pretty good lately. That's because I'm eating better. I didn't know that about cabbage. I like it, I just don't like to cook it. Also, it gives me gas. But with Glucophage, everything gives me gas.lol. Meadow - I don't eat peanut butter so I don't know about low carb. maybe someone on the Atkins or South Beach threads can answer that question.
Morning every one.. another pretty day here..i was at that eating for diabetics class yesterday..it was a ggod class..some of the topics i allready knew..one of the most helpful was reading labels and the amount of carbs i should be eating and protion control..sometimes a sugarfree product is not the best choice.. you need to be reading the carb content..if the carbs are high in the sf product maybe its not a good choice..the key is balance and planning..the visuals she used for portion control was neat too..such as 4 dice is 1 oz of cheese..who knew anyways i plan to use the info..will let u know how it goes..by the way she did not recomend atkins or south beach..she said we need all food groups to be healthy..to keep food journals and test sugar levels before and after to see what foods spike your sugar levels.. every diabetic is unique and what works for me might not for you..hope you all have agreat day((((((((hugs))))))))) rosey
Hi,Rosey. That class you took sounds very good. The dietition I saw used plastic food to show portions. Not very appetizing, but I got hungry anyway. Portion control is my biggest problem. So I buy everything I can in small individual packages even if it costs more. I've backsliding lately. Yesterday I used up the leftovers from my weekend blowout so there's nothing dangerous at home to tempt me. Sigh. We're having a lot of rain down here. But it's fine with me. Have a nice evening.

Welcome Angie! I was diagnosed in January of this year. Did you MD refer you to a nutritionist? Mine did and she has been a tremendous help. I have not logged on in such a long time because I started a new job, still going to classes at night, and the last thing I want to do when I get home is sit infront of a computer, but things have calmed down here, so I hope to log on at least once a day. Angie, the first thing I did that made a HUGE difference with both my blood sugar and weight is cut out ALL sugare and white carbs. I began eating whole wheat or oat bran bran, went to the sugar substitute and just started with a lot of protien. My nutritionist turned me on to the Kashi products, granola bars, oatmeal, cereal, because they are high in fiber and that cancels out the carbs. I would be happy to share ideas with you, feel free to e-mail me directly.
I am now down to 220 just following her suggestions. It is slow, but steady. The nice thing is she gives me 1 new thing to change every 3 weeks, instead of telling me to stop everytihng right away.
Hi everyone..and welcome to angie and hblank.. im rosey and live in alaska..we are a friendly group and try and share info..i know that being just diagnosed is a scary thing..i cried for days when i was diagnosed 7 yrs ago then i just got with the program..my advice is go slowly.. follow dr advice.. educate yourself..make small changes.. and exercise as you can tolerate..i just took a class for diabetics and eating and learned new things even after being diabetic for 7 yrs now..we just have to remember that anychanges are healthy for us..and that we are all unique.. what works for me might not for you so you need to pay attention to what affects your sugar levels..i also count carbs and eliminate all white processed foods and anyhting with sugar in them..read labels.. some sfree products are high in carbs too..anyways welcome to our group.. i thought spring was here but we had snow again i plan on doing some sewing today.. i want a new blouse for easter..have agreat day everyone ((((((((hugs))))))))) rosey
Hi,
Well, trying to add half my Actos pill morning and night to see if better. Too many deserts in the house and munchies this week-it's driving my sugar nuts. My bf was home and he decided to fix baked beans w/brown sugar, onions, and hamberger(hill billy beans as he calls them) biscuts and homefries. Well foolish me ate too much and now I am here in office-spent a few minutes on the eliptic machine and will do more as now my sugar is at 379
I told him, I can't eat that anymore. He just laughed-don't think he really has a clue. Not being mean-just doesn't understand.
I better figure it out quick.
Think I will stay on pill till I get this figured out better and see if I can get my numbers down. Went to a nutritionist once and never really understood it.
The carb numbers throws me. Is there and uncomplicated book for that?
I got so tired of being in limbo weight wise and having a bloated face and legs with the pill. I am doing well without my blood pressure , stomache pills and use baby asprin occationally. Doing without the diabetic pill worked for awhile on strict plan but when vered off some it went in a mess.
I am determined to get it somehow. Thanks for listening.
Whew! It's down to 367 already.
Payday I'm going to get some George's Aloe Vera juice at the Nature sore in the nearby big town. See if that helps.
little more exercise. Have a good evening. It hasn't been two hours since i've eaten so that may be part of it. That is the highest i think (I have checked) since I had been diagnosed. Hate to admite it, I don't know what year i was diagnosed-maybe 2001? Few months before my Mom got sick.-almost 4 years?
Angie - welcome to our thread. We're all struggling with the same issues, one day at a time. If you have access to a diabetes educator, that may help you with an overview of what you should be doing. In the meantime, consider the advice the others have given you and you're off to a good start. Keep posting and let us know how you're doing.
H - welcome back. Congratulations on your weight loss! Sounds like you've found a good program.
Ah, Rosey - snow again! Well, it is Alaska. It looks like our rain has cleared up some. I hope you finish your blouse in time for easter. I'm sure it will be pretty. You're so talented.
Carol - Your bf needs to be educated! My instructions are that anything over 300 requires a call to the doctor. But if you took the sample right after eating that made it somewhat higher. I'm told to do it about two hours after a meal. If it's that high then, call the doctor. I take 15 mg of Actos after the evening meal, along with Glucophage and Glucotrol. This combination works for me and my sugars have been good. My recent A1C came in at 5.9, which is very good. Is your doctor telling you to split the pills? If not, I'd recommend checking with him/her.
Have a nice evening all.
Deb - thinking of you.
Thank you everyone for the advice. I sure need it. I check my sugar every morning and everynight. My MD did not refer me to a nutrinist but I did get on weight watchers. I have not had a coke in three weeks. And that is real good for me to not have because I used to drink a 42 oz McDonalds twice a day. bad hunh? I have started drinking my coffee black (used to have cream and sugar) And I will cut the white carbs now that ya'all told me. Can you get pasta in whole wheat? I have a WW meeting tomorow and will let ya'all know if I have lost anymore o.k Again THANK YOU ALL FOR THE SUPPORT Angie
Angie, you can buy pasta in whole wheat and it tastes fine. Stay away from that low carb stuff, it tastes like cardboard!! You can use skim milk, don't cut the dairy out completely, you need the nutrients, and you can switch to the sweeteners, i use splenda and really like it.
Roset-thanks for the welcome. I am glad to be back. Yes, this nutritionist is great. Sometimes it is just finding the right one. She doesn't confuse me with numbers or anything like that, she will just say,"in stead cereal for breakfast, try an egg on a oat bran english muffin". That is what I need. I am not told not to eat things, but she tells me what to eat in place of it. For the carb counting, try low carb dieting for dummies (I swear it is the name of the book) I found it helpful. I also really like the Diabetic Cooking magazine, it really gives you good ideas for meals and snacks so you won't get bored eating the same thing all the time.
