hi nancy you will see a nurse to take a health history and learn how to use the meter. then you'll see a dietican and she'll explain the diet. i am also going to classes that explains more about diabeties. my sugar was 5.9 before eating today. glen
Thanks for the info. 5.9 is really good, isn't it? You must have been diagnosed fairly recently as well?? Can I ask what changes you have made to make the difference?
Glen, your meter readings are different than ours. Yours seem like the A1c. ours our whole numbers. e.g., 90 is normal, 100s are good for diabetics and 200 is way to high. (which is what mine did yesterday because of stress and bad eating). What are considered good readings on your system?
Mine is the same numbers, maybe it is different in Canada. Anything higher here than a 14 is really bad. Mine averages around a 9. Just a question, I want to lose a lot of weight by this Christmas, possibly 30-40 pounds. Does anyone think this is this realistic?

Melissa - I never heard of darkening of the skin as a diabetes side effect. But then I never heard of gastroparesis until I got it and that scared me into taking better care of myself. (Although I'm doing a poor job for the moment.) Anyway, you certainly can those 30-40 lbs by Christmas by sticking with a plan and including regular exercise. Try breaking it up into 10 lb goals. Psychologically it may make it easier.
Rosey - I hope you've taken a hot bath or shower to ease those aching muscles. Maybe you can do some crafts while dh is away or....maybe have a ladies night out.
Thanks everyone for the support. I never thought that would only be 5 pounds a month. I am not really trying a plan as of yet but I will be joining wieght watchers or curves when I go home i July. I am trying to motivate myself on my own and will be increasing my daily exercises on my own.
I was wanting to ask any of you for some good resources for food plans for my diabetic husband. His blood sugar, even with medications is about 265. He also needs to lose about 50-80 pounds. He has type 2 diabetes. I have run some searches on the net but I am kind of confused. We would like to find something that would reduce weight and lower the blood sugar. Can anyone suggest what works for you? He has tried low carb and that doesnt seem to work. Thank you in advance for any information!
Andrea - we are all struggling with trying to eat right and loss weight with diabetes. The best way to lose weight is to cut calories. With diabetics, you also need to watch fat and carbs. Cut out sugar and alcohol. Use whole grains instead of "white" foods like potatoes, rice, bread, etc., but in moderation. Also, fruit juices should be curtailed as they flood the system with fructose which is another form of sugar. it's better to eat several small meals rather than fewer large meals since regular food intake keeps the blood sugar level. There are many diabetic cookbooks and meal planners available. One good site is the American Diabetes Association website. If your dh has access to a diabetic educator through his health plan you might want to make an appointment and go with him. Also, very important - dh should get regular exercise. This will help bring his blood sugar down and make him feel better. Good luck and let us know how he's doing.

omigod Rosey! So glad dh is okay. What a scary thing. That cabin doesn't sound like my cup of tea either. I like to walk in nature, but get me back to the 4-star hotel for a fine dinner and some wine. I hope you enjoy your trip to Homer. I didn't know eagles hung out at the beach. Hope there's no pesky tourists there. They've already invaded S.F. and I have to compete for cable car seats with them. Grrr.
