I must be a sucker for punishement, I've been getting my legs waxed from the knee up to my bikini line, for let's see 23 years now.... I could own the freakin' company by now with all the money I've spent waxing...BUT I would never go back to shaving....

Cadbury is the most common chocolate in Australia so of course I love it!

Meow: As for the seamstress - over her they are expensive. One I tried to get the sleeves on a jacket shortened and it was going to cost me the same price as the jacket! ouch....

I like the chocolate filled Caburys..but so far I've been able to resist them.

Workout question for you experts: I've noticed that when doing barbell chest presses lately, my arms tend to give out before my chest does. What am I doing wrong?

just wanted to reflect on free day here...
i had mine today, attending one of those champagne-and-canapes things this evening then heading out for dinner.
i was pretty good(in terms of calories)- only sparkling water, six mixed canapes and light dinner.

what i'm quite happy about is how my attitude towards food seems to have changed. two months ago, on a free day i would've had a gazillion canapes, eaten a lot at dinner and then had chocolate or something when i got back home. but i'm far more relaxed instead... no post-dinner chocolates, no sharp pangs of guilt, i'm just a little concerned how it'll affect my UBWO tomorrow morning and determined to eat squeaky clean for the rest of the week.

has anyone else had a dramatic shift in their relationship with food?

Default just wanted to say hi!

Mornin!

Don't have much time but I wanted to stop in and say hello to everyone. Work is getting busier which is cutting down on my reading/posting time here. argh!

Had a busy busy weekend, but had alot of fun. Great news for me, I went out on Friday night to a special event with my friends, went to purchase a new outfit after work.. tried on size 13's just to check and see if they fit and THEY DID!!

Add me to the list of Easter Creme Egg haters.. yuck! I actually like the hollow bunnies, put em in the fridge, crack off a piece once it's nice and cold.

Deb, good luck.. I'll be thinking positive thoughts for you.

I'll be back later with more comments.

Cheers!

lore,

im noticing the same thing about food isnt it great?

I still love my mexican/tex mex food but now I can STOP and not shovel it into my face until im going to be sick.

I think more than the exercise, the change in attitude towards food is the best thing about BFL (for me anyways). I can't believe how messed up I used to be!

Default Good Morning!

This morning I got up and did my biceps/triceps and forearms. Ok workout, went heavier than I have been able to with no pain so that was great! It is going to be in the 70's today and I am looking forward to it! I almost forgot, but my spring semester starts today for college...grrrrrr! With all of this house stuff my head has been going a million miles a minute!
Mel - Actually my agent called me last night and told me the current owners of the house are reviewing our offer today at 11:00 a.m. est. I am nervous excited and scared all at the same time. I really like this house, but Bill and I are not budging on our offer. If they say no than we are walking away. We don't want to spend anymore on a house and honestly we still have a year left on our apartment lease so we aren't in a big hurry unless a deal comes along. This house is a deal!
ebe and JC - cadbury eggs rock! I love just the regualr ones. I have never tried the caramel of chocolate, but I think they sound kind of gross (sorry Mindi!). I am not a fan of chocolate filling. I love chocolate, but not that much!
Mindi- you say your arms give out before your chest. Are you sure it is your arms and not your shoulders? It is very easy to get the shoulders over -involved in this movement. The only thing I can think of is that you might want to make sure you are tucking your shoulders in while pressing and really focus on the pec muscles during the reps.....not sure what else to tell you!
Lore - it sounds like your tastes are chaning and so is your outlook on food. Once the feeling of free day being the last day you will ever get to eat junk food goes away, you will find that your free days become more and more like regualr healthy days. I just have one free meal or snack if I want it. It sounds like you are making this a normal part of your life and that is awesome! Great job!
Ilene, I am sorry to see that you are struggling. I notice I have been struggling a bit but it is almost that dreaded time and now I see why I have been struggling. I have been clean so that is ok. Just hang in there!
Have a great day ladies!

Default Barbell or dumbell presses

Mindi- When you do chest presses of any type, are you tucking your shoulder blades under you? Pulling them together under you on the bench, either incline or decline, will recruit more of your chest muscles and less of your shoulders. But eventually you will reach a point with the weight where your weakest part will give out first- be thatshoulders or biceps. That's where a spotter can get you past the sticking point, or move onto another exercise that doesn't depend so much on arm strength. Try db flies (tuck your shoulder blades here too) or the pec dec.

Well that is most likely the culprit then Mel and Jaime, thanks. I'll have to pay more attention to form and yes, my shoulders are one of my weaker areas.

Thanks a lot!

Hi everyone,

I am a jelly bean person. I most confess the cheaper the are the more I like them.

Just got back from the foot Dr. In a nut shell, when I had surgery the Dr removed most of the fat pad on the ball of my foot. Since fat cell do not grow back there is no protection for my foot when I do lunges and calf exersizes. This started the pain and now walking hurts. So the solution is three weeks of physical therapy to reduce swelling of the tendion and have orthodics made. My insurance won't cover the cost of the orthodics ($500). I am a little bumbed about it.

I have jsut finished my 3 week of BFL. I realize I have been so focused looking for results in either weight loss of loss of inches that I am not enjoying the results of the program. This helping me cause frustrated and anoid. I have decided to concentrate on the positives. These being sleeping better, feeling better, more energy, and the feeling of being stronger. This I hope will help with my focus on completing the first cycle.

Foot problems are horrible. Insurance companies think its not important to protect your feel therefore they pay for nothing. I have foot problems too and in the course of my life I have had 3 orthodics and have paid for all of them myself. I also have to pay the specialist co-pay instead of the regular Dr co-pay. I still stuggle with my feet and will eventually need surgery but I hate to keep going back all the time because I can't afford it. Hang in there.

Default Hormone Stuff

Good afternoon, everyone! It’s supposed to be 73 here this afternoon, so spring is back here in PA (at least western PA — we’ll have to check with Mel and Laura on eastern PA). Yesterday was a day I would rather forget (son sick, too much going on, absolutely nothing accomplished) so I’m glad it’s a fresh start.

Hormones (warning: you young chicks and any guys probably aren’t going to be interested): I went to the gynecologist yesterday and after he finished raving about my weight loss and calling all the office “girls” in to see the plastic surgery (side note: how come they are “girls” even if they are 55?), we got down to business. I told him about the insomnia, hot flashes, night sweats, dryness etc. and he said these are all very common menopause symptoms. To deal with them, he said I could go the herbal route or the hormone route. There was a negative study about hormones lately (slightly increased cancer risk — the Women’s Health Initiative study), so some start with herbal and then move up to hormones, if necessary. He recommended that I go right with the hormones, however, for two reasons: herbal remedies won’t help with any dryness or libido issues and the negative studies were based on really long term HRT users, like 10+ years. His suggestion was to try the hormones and if they help, use them for a year or two, to get through the worst time. So that’s what I’m doing. I’m taking the smallest dose and he said that I should feel an effect in 3-4 days. If I’m not getting any improvement after two weeks, double the dose and I’m to call if it still isn’t better two weeks after that.

Interesting, he did a lot of talking about menopausal weight gain, cautioning me that it is very common (I think Mel recently alluded to it). Women tend to pack on the fat around the middle for hormonal reasons during both peri– and full menopause. His reading has led him to believe that the best ways to avoid the menopausal fat is 1. exercise (hey, we knew that!) and 2. careful limitation of carbs. His belief is that our ability to metabolize carbs is also affected by these darned hormones and that a low-carb (not Atkins, but definitely limited and good carbs, of course) diet will best combat it. I believe that Christiane Northup also advocates this in The Wisdom of Menopause. I have found from my own experience that I was able to lose a lot of fat only by limiting carbs to 100 or so g/day, which includes veggie carbs. Something for us older gals to think about …

I’m got a hot date at the gym to do back with the trainer so I’ve got to run … more later.

Meg

PS -- I can't stand Cadbury eggs -- one of the very few candies that I don't like. DD adores them. Makes Easter a little easier for me!

Hey Meg, thanks for the info. One more question: are you taking natural hormonal therapy then? Or did you get a 'brand' like premarin? I'm not exactly sure of the difference but maybe you can explain it if you get a minute.

Default #*%$^&*!!!!

This post is kinda related to Meg's above.

Just got back from the gym where I had a great chest and tri workout. BUT I made the mistake of asking my trainer to do a bf pinch first. I've been feeling leaner and more muscular and the scale is down a few pounds, so was looking forward to this. Each pinch site was a few millimeters less than the last time he did it (YIPEE!) and it looked like the overall # was gonna be down, until he got to the pinch sites on my abs. Exactly the same as 6 months ago So the end result was very little change. This stinks. I know I look leaner, and I know I'm stronger than 6 months ago. I guess the only consolation I can take here is that without this way of life, I'd really be blowing up like a balloon at this point in my life

I feel like I'm working really hard just to stay in the same place. Kinda like cardio on a treadmill.

Frustrated,
mel
