Have a Sensitive Stomach? These Foods Could Help

If you have a sensitive stomach, then you know how uncomfortable it can be. Certain foods, gallbladder problems, poor digestion or poor eating habits can trigger this condition. If you are a chronic sufferer of a stomach problem, you either learn to deal with the pain and discomfort or look for ways to ease your condition each time it strikes.

The symptoms of having a sensitive stomach problem vary from a burning sensation in the abdomen to flatulence or a gassy feeling in the tummy. Bloating is also commonly felt. Pain can either be mild or severe, and the length of time it occurs may differ. A sensitive stomach may cause you to have frequent trips to the toilet.

Ideal Food Combinations

One of the most common stomach problems is hyperacidity, a condition that occurs due to eating spicy foods, practicing of bad habits (smoking, excessive intake of alcohol, skipping meals) or having peptic ulcers. While the most obvious way to prevent the onset of this condition is to avoid what triggers it, choosing certain kinds of foods will also help. Nutritionists say there are good combinations of foods to eat in order to avoid having stomach problems and to get the maximum benefits of all foods consumed. This should be coupled with good eating habits.

Here are some foods that may help if you have a sensitive stomach:

  • Foods rich in carbohydrates such as rice are easily digested, yet not acid forming.
  • A good combination of foods is starch- or protein-rich food and vegetables. Always remember to combine foods rich in proteins and fats or starches and fats, but not those rich in proteins and starches.
  • Pineapple or papaya can be combined with cheese, chicken or fish because both fruits contain two of the most powerful protein-digesting enzymes.
  • Non- or low-acidic fruits are best eaten alone because they are high in alkaline. These include most berries (strawberries, blueberries, raspberries), apricots, nectarines, mangoes, peaches, plums and persimmons, melons and bananas.
  • Grains combined with dried or fresh vegetables and fruits are beneficial.
  • Add foods rich in magnesium, such as spinach and other green leafy vegetables, black beans, pumpkin or squash seeds and halibut to your diet. Magnesium prevents the secretion of too much hydrochloric acid, which is the culprit behind most sensitive stomach problems.

Prevention

If you have a sensitive stomach and you eat foods that aggravate the condition, or if you have a habit of missing meals and then overeating, you will most likely suffer from long-term stomach problems. Therefore, it is necessary to always eat proper foods and to have good health habits. Drinking herbal teas can do wonders to relieve discomfort. Persistent stomach pains, however, may require medication, although synthetic drugs should always be used with caution because they usually have side effects that may cause more health problems. Nevertheless, prevention is always preferred over having to cure a condition. If you have a sensitive stomach, you should always keep your stomach's environment (gut flora) healthy and balanced.
