Well despite a thoroughly off plan day this week things seem to have gone well. Could I see the 280’s next week? I hope so!
Hmm well I think yesterday is the first day where I really think I truly went off plan.
I went to a friend’s house who made me amazing homemade Mexican food. She also used to be a bartender so between the two….bad Rodeogirl.
Ah well live and learn. It’s not the end of the world but I would like to avoid a repeat for a few months.

Today, as many days lately, I stepped out my door and walked to school. After class I walked down to the cashiers office to pick up my financial aid check. Then I walked back up campus to deposit in at the ATM machine in the student union building.
I don’t have class on Fridays so I was in no hurry on this Thursday afternoon. I thought I would like to go see Gran Tarino (which I recommend, btw) and I wondered if I could walk to the theater and back. The theater is on the other side of town. I wasn’t really sure how far it was. But I decided to go for it. So I walked to the theater. When I got there I found that I had just missed the matinee but could catch the next showing in a couple hours.
I was wearing shorts when I left the house because it was around 35F and the sun was shining - which for me is plenty warm to walk the 2 mile round trip to class and back. But now it was getting late. The sun was sinking and I realized I’d be cold on the way home since I was sort of cold now. I crossed the parking lot to Bi-Mart and found a pair of sweat pants on sale for $9. I put those in my backpack and decided to walk over to Subway and have dinner. I had a footlong chicken sandwich and soup. Subway charges too much for their soup, but otherwise it was a pleasant meal. I ate slowly and did a sudoku puzzle from a magazine I had bought with my sweatpants and then eventually made my way back to the theater. I bought my ticket and then sat and listened to an audio book I had on my iPod while waiting for the movie to start.
After the movie I changed into my sweat pants (which I was very thankful for because it had dropped down to about 25F) and left the theater. As I was leaving a free shuttle that runs all over town and back to campus pulled up. I thought about taking it but decided to tough it out and walk back home.
I’m happy to say I made it and just used Google Maps to figure out that I walked about 6.5 miles today! My left leg is a little sore - I get arthritis in that knee from time to time so I’m going to have to ice it - but other than that and some slightly sore feet I’m no worse for wear.
I’m still not really sure what possessed me to randomly walk to the theater but I’m glad I did and even more - I’m glad that I can! I could barely walk 1/4 mile this time last year - no kidding.

Being back on track is paying off. It’s great to see the numbers move down this week. I’m hoping to get to 285 by Valentines day and 265 by the end of March.
I’m still trying to stick with my 3lb/week calorie goals though it’s gotten a bit harder now that I’m under 1800 calories per day. If I eat whole foods with a lot of bulk it works out pretty well but if I eat too many Triscuits or other snacky type foods I find that I run out of calories sooner than I’d like.
Still 1700+ calories is a lot more than some people allot themselves and I know with the right choices I can stick with it. If it becomes unbearable my plan is to adjust my goal to 2.5lbs lost per week but I don’t see that happening anytime soon.
…blah…blah…blah. Yeah, yeah weight loss is a journey but pretty much most of us want the destination to come quickly. I think that for myself the biggest lesson I’ve learned so far is to get to my destination faster I have to slow my plan down.
Over Christmas I didn’t lose any weight. I ate the right amount of calories to maintain my weight but I didn’t lose. Part of me thinks if I had stuck to my strict caloric goals over the holiday that I’d probably be about 5 pounds lighter right now, and thus 5 pounds closer to my destination.
But trying to lose a couple pounds a week with the holidays would have made my time there pretty miserable. I didn’t have all my tools (my food and bathroom scales for example) and I didn’t have as much control over what foods were in the house. If the whole experience had been frustrating I might have gone completely off plan by now saying, as I’ve said in the past, “Oh it’s too hard.”
So even though I want to sprint, Slow and Steady is what will get me to my ultimate destination the quickest. It’s not all or nothing. It’s whatever works and gets me through the day.
Well I practiced my new goal of trying something new. I came home with a Star Fruit and Brussels Sprouts.
I haven’t braved the Brussels Sprouts yet but I ate the Star Fruit tonight (after looking up how to do it, heh) and it was pretty tasty. It was a bit expensive for what you got but I’d guess they aren’t in season so much right now.
I read that they have lots of good nutrients so I’ll be adding those to my fruit bowl once I am gainfully employed or when they come down in price.
Well tomorrow marks my two month anniversary at 3FC and my calorie counting journey. I’m down over 20lbs now and happily making my way towards summer.
I feel great, have tons more energy, and am enjoying food now a lot more than before I started paying attention to what I was eating.
The only downside is taking the time to figure out calories - but there’s no other way this works for me and honestly, it’s not hard once you get the hang of it and use a good tool like The Daily Plate.
I can now sit in the desks at school - they aren’t comfortable yet, but before I could wedge myself in but it was painful. Now it’s just uncomfortable after 90 minutes of class (our classes are 2-4 hours). But I know that by midterms I should be a lot more comfortable than I am now. I should be down 10ish pounds by then, I hope!
Not a lot of progress since mid-December but I maintained through the holidays which is a success in and of itself. I’m back to Monday weigh-ins and my normal routine since just before New Years so I’m looking forward to seeing that scale move again!
I couldn’t figure out what I wanted to eat for lunch so made a delicious snack instead. 1 wedge of Laughing Cow swiss (35 calories), 2 ounces of turkey (50 calories), and 6 Fire Roasted Tomato and Olive Oil Triscuits (120 calories).
Flavorful, satisfying, easy and inexpensive.
