6 Tips to Stop Hunger Cravings when Bored

Eating is pleasurable for most people, which is why it’s so hard to fight hunger cravings when you’re bored. The trick is to stay busy and replace eating (from boredom) with something else you enjoy doing. It’s important to recognize your body’s hunger cues so that you know when you’re actually hungry and when you want to eat because you’re bored. Below are some tips to help stop hunger cravings when boredom strikes.

1. Don’t Keep Food in Sight

Sometimes when we see a food we love, we want to eat it even if we’re not hungry. A simple solution is when you’re at home, try to keep food in the refrigerator or pantry out of plain sight. If you can’t see your favorite food, it’ll be easier to forget about wanting it so bad. Look for something to eat when you start to feel hungry only. Plus, keeping food out of sight will make your kitchen look cleaner!

2. Don’t Keep Junk Food in the House

If you don’t have easy access to sweets and other junk food, you won’t be able to indulge in it when you’re bored. The easiest way to prevent from binging on junk food is to not buy it at the store in the first place. When you go grocery shopping, don’t go when you’re hungry since that makes it harder to resist buying junk food. Keeping healthy food in the house means if a hunger craving does strike, at least you won’t binge on junk food.

3. Stay Busy

If you’re someone who eats when bored, try to avoid boredom in the first place. Stay as busy as possible preferably doing something you enjoy, and you’ll forget all about your hunger cravings. Clean the house, go for a walk, shop, hang out with friends, exercise, read a good book, watch a movie, or just get out of the house so you won’t have easy access to food.

4. Chew Gum

Chewing gum can sometimes keep your mouth busy enough to forget about eating. Gum can satisfy a sweet tooth as well. Sugar-free gum is usually the best choice. Always keep gum nearby to help prevent boredom-related food cravings and don’t forget to chew gum after meals to help prevent cavities.

5. Exercise Instead of Eating

What better time to exercise than when you’re bored. Exercising has so many benefits, and just think how much better you’ll look if you replace eating with exercise. Working out should also spark your appetite; typically post-workout hunger cravings are for healthier food. If you’re not up for a hard core workout at least go for a walk around the block to help your forget about your cravings

6. Replace Food with Something Else Enjoyable

Since food is enjoyable for most people, when you’re bored, replace food with something else you like to do. Do you enjoy reading books, watching movies, going shopping, or playing cards with friends or on the computer? As long as it’s not destructive, replace one vise with another to help you stay busy and keep your life pleasurable.
