You hear the weight loss benefits of cardiovascular activities like running, kickboxing and jumping rope, but none of these are forms of low impact fitness. If you have bad joints or have doctor's orders to only partake in low impact fitness, know that there are still plenty of exercises you can do that can lead to extreme weight loss. High impact cardiovascular activity isn't the only way to lose weight. Here are some low impact types of fitness that will help you reach your weight loss goals.
Zumba is a great low impact fitness activity because it's fun and easy to modify. A fusion of Latin moves and music in an hour-long class, Zumba is a suitable form of fitness no matter what level of shape you're in. Because the class is primarily composed of dance moves, you don't have to worry about putting significant strain on your body. There are sections that contain high impact moves like jumping, but these moves can easily be modified to a small bounce or side steps. Dancing, in general, is a good way to lose weight because it doesn't feel like work. You're more likely to continue with a workout plan that is actually enjoyable. If you like to shake it to fun music, take up a Zumba class.
2. Swimming or Water Aerobics
Any kind of exercise done in the pool is about as low impact as it gets. Not only are both swimming laps and water aerobics efficient forms of cardiovascular exercise, they're also great for resistance training. You'll sculpt your muscles as your body works against the water resistance. If you're feeling social and like to work out in a class setting, there are a number of water aerobics classes to look into taking. If you prefer to exercise alone, swimming laps in the pool is a good low impact option.
Walking is one of the best forms of exercise out there because there isn't anything stopping you from doing it! You don't need a gym membership, equipment or fancy workout clothing. All you need are your legs. If you want extreme weight loss, look to take up walking on a trail or on an uneven path. Hiking is low impact and will help you to target your entire body. The best part about walking is the fact that you can fit it in several times a day without feeling like you're exerting too much energy. Taking a walk is easy to do in the morning and also in the evening.
4. Interval Class
Taking an interval class is one of the most efficient ways to work out. You'll combine strength training and cardiovascular activity, which will help you get in shape faster. The cardio moves tend to be low impact (think side steps and walking lunges with weights), but you can always modify moves if you're concerned. As your body builds muscle from the strength training, you'll burn calories faster.
Low impact fitness doesn't mean low results. Try some of these exercises to accelerate your weight loss.
