Understanding Depression in Men

Depression in men is noticed more frequently after entering andropause (male menopause). In the majority of the cases, depression appears as a result of sexual problems such as:

  • Decreased libido
  • Erectile dysfunction
  • Impotence

It is estimated that around 40 percent of men aged 40 and up are affected by such problems, so depression in men is rather common.

Signs and Symptoms of Depression in Men

Depression affects men and women in very different ways. Depressed women tend to direct their feelings inward, while depressed men  will exercise their depression in other ways. Some of the most common signs of male depression include:

  • Agitation
  • Craving for control
  • Inability to discuss doubts and weaknesses
  • Increased irritability
  • Need to blame others
  • Obsessive time-keeping
  • Predisposition for conflicts
  • Restlessness
  • Sleep deprivation
  • Strong fear of failing
  • Suspiciousness

Most men rely on excessive alcohol consumption, TV and sex as forms of self-medication, but these are far from being a real solution to the problem.

Treatment Options for Male Depression

If any of the signs and symptoms listed above is noticed, the best thing to do is to seek professional help. Left untreated, depression can determine both men and women to commit suicide. Fortunately, there are numerous treatments for depression, both conventional and alternative. Men need to start with the following approaches:

  • Diet
  • Exercise
  • Individual psychotherapy
  • Social support

These will somehow improve the symptoms, but the ultimate solution is represented by medication. After being consulted by a professional, drugs from the following categories may be prescribed:

  • Amphetamines and MAO (monoamine oxidase) inhibitors
  • SSRIs (selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors)
  • Tricyclic antidepressants

It is mandatory to consult a doctor before taking any of these types of medication, as they may have serious side effects if the required dose is exceeded. In addition, there are possible drug interactions and lethal risks of overdose.
