Guilt-Free Indulgence: 8 Healthy Fruit Dessert Options

A fruit dessert can give you a healthy portion of vitamins and minerals without excess calories and fat. Here are some tasty, healthy fruit desserts you can eat without breaking your diet.

1. Fried Bananas

Fried bananas are a tasty fruit dessert for those on a diet. Slice one banana in half lengthwise and coat it very lightly in brown sugar. Place the banana in a hot skillet, and fry both sides for two to five minutes.

2. Grilled Fruits

Many fruits, including mangoes, peaches, nectarines and pineapples, can be grilled. Coat fruits lightly in canola oil before grilling and grill for five to seven minutes on each side. You can sprinkle a small amount of brown sugar over your grilled fruit, though you might find that it’s not necessary as grilling brings out the natural sweet flavor of the fruit itself.

3. Chocolate Dipped Strawberries or Bananas

Dark chocolate is a healthy dessert option, since it contains antioxidants to slow the signs of aging, prevent cancer and protect your heart. Dark chocolate may also help elevate your mood.

Dip washed, hulled strawberries into melted dark chocolate and place them on wax paper to harden. You can also dip bananas in chocolate by inserting a wooden stick into the banana before dipping it to make it easier to eat. If you prefer a cold treat, freeze your chocolate covered fruit for 45 minutes and allow it to thaw for two or three minutes before serving.

4. Fruit with Nonfat Greek Yogurt

Nonfat Greek yogurt is smooth and creamy, since the liquids have been removed. Mix berries or other fruit into nonfat Greek yogurt for a tasty fruit dessert that also provides protein and calcium. Spice things up with herbs like mint, dark chocolate chips or honey.

5. Fruit Salad

Fruit salad makes a delicious dessert. You can use just about any fruit you like for fruit salad, though many prefer the tangy tastes of tropical fruits. Sprinkle your fruit salad with berries, crushed nuts, honey or vinegar.

6. Fresh Fruit with Angel Food Cake

Angel food cake is affordable and low in fat. Serve angel food cake topped with fresh fruit and berries. Drizzle the cake with sugar free, fat free syrup and top it with nonfat whipped topping.

7. Marinated Strawberries

Fresh strawberries marinated in balsamic vinegar are a sophisticated topping to angel food cake and nonfat frozen yogurt. They can also be eaten alone. Wash and hull your strawberries, then put them in a bowl with just enough balsamic vinegar to coat the berries. Stir berries until they’re evenly coated with the sugar and vinegar mixture, then allow them to sit at room temperature for one to four hours. Sprinkle the berries with freshly ground pepper before serving for added spice.

8. Fruit Kabobs

Fruit kabobs are a great dessert on the go. Just put chunks of your favorite fruit on a skewer, sprinkle with lemon juice (to prevent oxidation) and serve.
