I've seen you all talk about the Jillian Michaels workout videos. I've been exercising (walking and eliptical) 5 days a week but would be interested in this too. Which one would you all recommend to start with?
I suggest you start with the Shape Up set (2 dvds), since you have been exercising already some. the beginners are good, but I only used them a week then jumped into the others for one big reason: the beginner set is longer due to a lot of talking and space between circuits, but the shape up set is one continuous flow and is only a half hour each (but you really work that half hour more than most hour long DVDs I've done). You can easily modify the harder moves at first, until you work up to doing it fully. I just don't think most people will do the beginner set long enough to make it worth the $$. The best deal is to get the 5 DVD boxed set, then you will have the shape up set, the cardio kickbox (which I rotate in with the shaep up set) and the Maximize set which I believe is harder than shape up, but I'm not there yet so haven't done them. You can get a good deal on these from Amazon, and I'm not sure if they are selling the boxed set in stores yet, I have seen Shape Up DVDs individually at Walmart though.
Adding--Jillian has a new one out, called 30 day Shred, and I have tried parts of it on TW on demand and they are really good 20 minute workouts, but not as intense as the Shape Up workouts, it does look like a good DVD though.

I didn't notice anyone in a KeyWest tee shirt, Vanetta. Yeah, small world. We were probably 3-4 machines away from eachother if you were on the bikes - I was on the big, tall StepMill. Do you do any perosnla training there? I see Josh about 2 times a month - to get a new upper and new lower body workout and get measured.
Today I showed that I lost 9 pounds in the last 6 weeks, but gained 2 pounds of lean muscle mass - meaning I lost 100% fat. Gotta love weight training.
I just had a BL mini-challenge....carrying 20 40-pound bags of compost all around my yard. Actually, the last five were dripping wet, so I suspect they were more than 40. I wanted to quit, but I thought about Brittany. Even when she had lost, she finished her challenges. I weigh less than she does, so I had no reason not to just plug along. So i did all five beds and some of the strawberry patch.
When I was done, I was a muck-covered mess because of the wet bags. Not to mention that I experienced TTF (total tampon failure). I use the phrase pretty casually, but it looked like an actual train wreck happened somewhere near my upper right thigh.
Hey Nori....No, I have only been to a personal trainer once and it was a really bad experience (read: young kid who was more about how he looked in the gym and talking to his buddies than he was about what I was saying and asking)...when we went out to that 24Hr, the guy we talked to (my workout buddy didn't belong to a gym and we were getting her signed up) sounded like he really knew his stuff and I really like the place...great atmosphere of people actually working out and not a just posing...so maybe I'll give it another try.
Jillybean - I love CedarPoint....now, I was a King's Island season pass holder for many years before moving west. If there is one thing Ohio does right, it's rollercoasters.
Girly - don't sweat it, we all have our down times. You are sticking with us and that is what counts. I hope you find something to take care of those allergies.
Keillynsmom - I've seen the book but haven't picked it up. What would we be doing by working through it?
Hi All You Newcomers...jump on in.
I'm sorry I'm all over the place here, I mean, I haven't even given a shout out to Diva...So, to Everyone I have not mentioned "HELLO !"
I am going to admit to being a bit puzzled about something....my HRM. Last night after the gym, I took the HRM off without turning it off and I noticed that it kept counting calories. Hmmmmm, so I put it on the counter and went to take a shower. When I came back, it was still counting calories. I thought, well maybe it counts to allow for my BMR....so I reset it to 0 cals and left it on the nightstand overnight. When I checked it this morning, either the nightstand or one of the cats had burn 6,000 calories in the night. What's up with that?
And finally today...it's haircut day....wooohooooo....not only am I looking forward to losing a couple of lbs by getting this stuff cut off, but I am going to see Sean...my own personal "queer eye" guy. I can't wait.
Wow cant keep up. I am excited about some new challenges. and it looks like you girls are prepared for it! As a newbie I am wondering what to expect!
Julia, for a lot of us, the most important thing in these challenges is the chatting. We give and get all the support we need right here.
I also like the accountability factor. I love the weekly weigh-ins. I post my weight on Monday mornings whether I have gained or not. The teams usually do little mini challenges on the side to help us focus on exercise and staying on our plan.
We do the weigh-ins exactly like they do on The Biggest Loser, so if you weighed in at 189.3 put in in your (edited) post EXACTLY like that. The only thing we don't do is vote people off, cuz that's just mean, lol.
A lot of peeps like to use their freebie weeks when they've gained, but I like to save mine in case there's ever a time I can't get online or whatnot.
Mostly though, and I think others will agree...it's all about the Chat & support threads.

Amen! I cannot wait until my kids can do Cedar Point.
Since KI went all Paramount and Spongebob, I just cannot make myself go. Remember when it was just the nice, simple Hanna-Barberaland? Good times; good times. When they changed the "Scooby-Doo" to the "Beastie", I knew it was all downhill from there.

I grew up in Ohio and we used to go to KI all the time....back in the days where the boat ride was "It's a Small World After All." I loved Hanna-Barberaland! Oh, the memories!
It's been a couple of days since I posted and that's at least 5 or 6 pages back. I have zipped in and out to read the posts, but I'm giving up on any personals at the moment. It's just been a little busy around here since, well, Monday. Tuesday was to be our pool opening day (yes, we're nuts), but it started on Monday when the guy brought the pump early so we could start getting the huge amount of water that collected this winter. I helped with some of this (although I'm glad he brought help on Tuesday), and spent part of the evening filling the pool and pumping out more water.
Tuesday the pool was opened, but the pump (which we new was shot in the fall) started but with a lot of noise and heat. So yesterday we got a new pump quite late in the day and on went the heater. The weather is beautiful here and if we'd been up and running Tuesday we would have been in the water today. As is it the temp is coming up faster than normal (we have a solar blanket as well which helps since it's quite sunny). I'm thinking I'll manage a dip first thing tomorrow morning. Hooray! I'm looking forward to trying to switch over some of my treadmill work to the pool. Easier on these old joints.
So other than that, not much new. Still loving the HRM. Have done 7 hours of organized exercise (this is normal) and it's given me some good numbers to compare in the pool tomorrow. It's been such a long, miserable winter that I'm very much looking forward to a swim. Besides, the weather is gorgeous out (up to 23C today / 73F) and to be the same tomorrow and quite decent Saturday. I've heard a rumour that we might get rain on Sunday, but that's okay.
My usual 'official' date is Sunday, so I suppose that makes me an early weigh-in during this challenge. I was tempted to change it to mid-week, but in the long run it really doesn't matter.
For the folks interested in Bob's book, he lays out his program for making the internal changes that make the external changes easier and more permament. In each chapter, he's got some exercises/questions for you to think about and answer to work on part of the internal stuff that drives the lifestyle that makes you overweight. I'm reading through it now and some of it seems a bit simplistic but some of his questions are really good and he gives some great ideas for getting and building motivation. Some people seem to be naturally enthusiastic about whatever they do -- I'm completely unable at this point to even believe I can make one more concerted effort to lose weight. I just can't see a good end to it if I do make the effort.
I like Jillian's "beatings, beatings, and more beatings" philosophy -- it definitely gets results! But Bob is addressing the internal stuff along with eating and exercising and I'm hoping somewhere between the two and with my BLC team, I finally "catch fire" and make it to some happy ending I can't really see at this point.
I was hoping to find some folks interested in going through the book with me, chapter by chapter, bouncing answers and questions off of each other as we go through and see what we can get out of it, as we go through the summer BLC.
Thanks,
Barb

KI and Cedar Point are the best! I love the merry-go-round at CP and Effiel Tower and Viking Ship at KI. I haven't been in probably 15 years. Maybe when I'm home at the end of summer I can talk Mom into going and take my cousin's kids.
