4 Health Benefits of Podcasts

Podcasts, Internet or mobile-device “radio” shows, can have a beneficial effect on your health in a number of ways. There are a plethora of podcasts for you to choose from, many of which are completely free or only come with a minimal charge. You can subscribe to favorite providers or channels or listen to only one podcast that addresses a topic or music style in which you’re interested. A great benefit of podcasting is that there are always so many new shows, but you’ll also have easy access to many past shows.

1. Inspires Relaxation

Depending on what podcast you listen to, the music or program can help relax and calm you. Relaxation is actually a very real health benefit. Stress and anxiety can make you physically sick and chronic stress can raise your risk for worrisome physical and mental health conditions, such as heart disease, stroke, high blood pressure and depression. Taking time each day to relax is essential to your overall well-being. When relaxing, choose a podcast with calming music. Close your eyes, lie back in a comfortable chair and let the podcasts relax you.

2. Educates You

What you’ll find in podcasts is far more diverse than what you’ll find among the local radio stations. A podcast can be entirely educational and there are plenty of heath-related topics than can teach you how to live a healthier life. You can hear (or see, if you’ve chosen a video podcast) new exercises or ideas for healthy eating.

Besides learning new convenient ways to stay healthy, learning about anything through a podcast can improve your brain health. Staying mentally active and challenging yourself to keep thinking about important issues and topics that interest you will help decrease your risk for developing conditions such as dementia and Alzheimer’s later in life.

3. Inspires More Activity

While some podcasts can help relax you, others can inspire you to get moving. Exercising, especially without someone else to encourage you to commit to a long-term exercise routine, is made easier when you have music to inspire you to get moving. Choose a podcast with upbeat, easy-to-dance-to music to listen to while you workout. You may not even have to scour the selections for the right podcast; many health-oriented programs will put together a selection of music and encouraging words that will help you keep up the tempo.

Regular exercise can help you achieve and/or maintain a healthy weight for your body type and it can decrease your risk for virtually any type of serious health condition, such as cancers, heart disease, diabetes, high cholesterol and more.

4. Helps You Quit Unhealthy Behaviors

Smoking, drinking too much and doing drugs are addictive, extremely unhealthy habits. You may be too embarrassed to reach out to someone you know for help. There are podcasts out there that help people learn to cope with addiction and gives them the confidence to ask for professional help when needed. A podcast from a therapist or a survivor of addiction can be an anonymous, helpful tool for those who struggle with unhealthy behavior.
