Why a Balanced Diet May Still Prevent You from Losing Weight

You probably know that a balanced diet is essential for maintaining good health as well as your ideal weight. However, there are cases when you eat the right types of food but still find yourself unable to lose the extra pounds. If you are eating a balanced diet but still unable to lose weight, read on for some possible reasons.

Hypothyroidism

If you are eating a nutritious and well-balanced diet but are still unable to lose weight, there is a possibility that you could have hypothyroidism. Symptoms of this health condition include dry skin, fatigue, headaches and puffiness in the areas around your eyes. If you have these symptoms then you might want to get tested. Hypothyroidism refers to a deficiency in thyroid hormones. This deficiency can lead to a decrease in your metabolism. When your metabolism is not working properly, you lose your appetite but also gain weight. Even if you’re eating a healthy diet, your thyroid deficiency could be causing water retention and fat accumulation in your body, which makes it hard to lose weight.

Medications

There are also some medicines that can cause weight gain, so if you are taking any type of medication on a regular basis, it could explain why it’s difficult for you to lose weight. Antidepressants are one of the most common medications that can make you gain weight, especially those that contain the ingredient paroxetine. Antidepressants only cause significant weight gain when they are used regularly over a long period of time. If you are using oral contraceptives or birth control pills, then this could explain your weight loss difficulty. You might want to switch to low-dose contraceptives that cause less weight gain, if any. Steroids and anti-diabetes medicines can also cause weight gain.

Food Sensitivity

Food sensitivity is another hidden cause of weight gain and other negative health conditions. No matter how healthy a particular food is, it will do you more harm than good if you are allergic or sensitive to it. Some food sensitivities show less obvious signs, so you really need to keep track of what you eat and your body’s reaction in order to find out what foods you’re sensitive to. For instance, do you feel bloated, fatigued or constipated after eating a particular type of food? Then chances are, your body is sensitive to it. Food sensitivity can lead to fluid retention, which in turn causes weight gain.

Abnormal Fluid Retention

If you are eating a well-balanced diet then there is also the possibility that your weight gain is coming from water instead of fat. You can determine this by pressing a finger into your skin (ideally in the areas where you’ve gained weight). If the skin does not spring back and develops an indentation from your finger, then chances are you are abnormally retaining too much water. This is normal for some women who are about to get their period, but if you are puffy on a regular basis then you should consult your doctor. Water retention could be a sign of kidney failure or even cancer.
