Food Journal 8/26-8/29 (skipped 8/30-9/1)
I have no good excuse, but from Wednesday to Saturday, I did not fill out my food journal. But I had a very interesting experience relating to food journals that I will share in place of this week’s food journal.
I was cleaning out my closet and sorting out some papers that I wanted to have shredded. I came across some old school papers, including a one-week food journal I did for a nutrition class, complete with a paragraph about my thoughts and emotions after each entry.
The most shocking part in re-reading this journal well over a year later was how much my eating habits have changed. My weight hasn’t changed much, but my eating habits have changed drastically from what was surely an inevitable trip to heart-disease-ville or diabetes-land. What was formerly sugary cereals in the morning, visits to the taqueria at lunch, afternoon snacks of candybars, and dessert every night (sometimes 2 or 3 times each night) is now fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and smaller portions. I feel very proud of that.
The secondmost shocking thing about it was that I still have as much guilt about eating as I did then. I think this guilt is trying to tell me something - and I’m ready to listen.
I had my 33rd birthday over the weekend. This is the first birthday in probably 10 years where I weighed less than the previous birthday. This is also probably my best year in terms of making positive changes. Sometimes when I get in a rut I have to remind myself that change is not impossible, it just takes practice and committment.
