Candida Diet: 5 Natural Remedies for Candida

The Candida diet is a natural way to help against the overgrowth of yeast in your intestine known as Candida. For many people, Candida overgrowth is not normally a problem, but for those who have a weakened immune system, Candida overgrowth can be quite a problem. The Candida diet offers several natural remedies for the condition known as Candida.

1. Avoid Sugars

Sugar is a feeding ground for yeast, and to get rid of it, you will need to reduce your sugar intake. Sugars to avoid include juices, syrups, honey and molasses. Any food that has the following ingredients should be avoided: fructose, sucrose and lactose. Keep away from specifically foods that are high in sugars or composed entirely of sugar such as candy, soda, cookies, cakes and ice cream.

To help your sweet tooth, there are several sugar-substitutes that can be consumed safely. These include artificial sweeteners such as saccharin or natural sweeteners like stevia extract. In addition, most fruits can also be eaten safely.

2. Avoid Refined Grains and All White Starch

Refined grains and white starches convert almost immediately to sugar in your body, making them almost as bad as eating sugars. Items in particular to avoid include white bread, bagels, and muffins, white pasta and potatoes sans skin.

Acceptable grains on the Candida diet include whole grain flour and breads, whole grain brown rice, whole grain pasta, wild rice and potatoes including the skin.

3. Eat More Healthy Fats

Healthy fats aid the digestive system to get nutrients out of your food, as well as slow down your digestion so the body can get the most out of what you eat. Coconut oil is the best source of healthy fat for the Candida diet. However, other sources of healthy fat include meat, fish, dairy, fish oils, flax-seed oil, avocados, nuts, olives and olive oil, canola and vegetable oils.

It is important to avoid all hydrogenated oils. The process by which oil is hydrogenated turns it into damaging trans-fats, which is unhealthy on the Candida diet.

4. Avoid Antibiotics and Oral Contraceptives

Antibiotics can end up killing beneficial bacteria in your digestive system that help keep Candida yeast under control. If you suffer from problems related to Candida, it is recommended that you stop taking antibiotics and allow the beneficial bacteria to heal and resume its work.

In addition, oral contraceptives change the balance of hormones in the body in such a way that it lowers the body’s ability to prevent an outgrowth of Candida. If you take birth control pills, talk to your doctor about alternative birth control methods.

5. Consider Supplements

There are several supplements which can help with the control of Candida.

  • Acidophillus. This is a beneficial bacteria that limits the growth of Candida.
  • Enteric-coated oils and garlic. These capsules allow the oil and garlic to pass through your stomach untouched and are absorbed within the intestines. Both of these substances help control the spread of Candida.
  • Other probiotic bacteria such as lactobacilli or bifidobacteria. These encourage the growth of helpful intestinal flora that prevents the spread of Candida.
