10 Types of Low Fat Soup

Soup has been a comfort food for generations, and there are many low fat soup options for the health conscious dieter.  Recipes for these low-fat and healthy soups can be found in many cookbooks, or you can improvise your current recipes with healthy substitutions.

1 – Chicken and Rice Soup

The ultimate in comfort food, chicken and rice soup is an old staple.  This is an easy recipe to improvise: just use fat-free, low sodium chicken broth, white meat chicken and fresh vegetables.  Some ideas for vegetables to try are: green beans, carrots, onions and celery.

2 – Carrot and Sweet Potato Soup

Carrot and sweet potato soup is low-fat and packed full of vitamins and fiber.  Start with a base of fat-free, low sodium chicken or vegetable broth and use spices such as curry and cumin, and you have a great lunch (plus leftovers).

3 – Split Pea Soup

Split pea soup is a fall and winter favorite that can still be enjoyed as part of a low-fat diet plan. Use a fat-free, low sodium broth as the base and dried peas with canola oil. Another benefit is the high fiber content.

4 – Gazpacho Soup

Gazpacho soup is the perfect summer fare. This is a chilled soup that contains fresh tomatoes and cucumbers. Use a low sodium vegetable juice for base and virgin olive oil to keep it healthy. Blend, chill and enjoy!

5 – Onion Soup

Onion soup is an easy and quick soup recipe, and when made with a vegetable based broth, is healthy and nutritious as well.

6 – Chicken and White Bean Chili

This is technically chili, but deserves to be included for the comfort and yum value. Along with being low in fat, this option is also high in protein and fiber. Use white meat chicken and dry white beans with other wholesome ingredients and no-fat, low sodium chicken broth as the base.

7 – Hot and Sour Shrimp Soup

For another option that is high in protein and has a lot of spice to it, try hot and sour shrimp soup. The slight extra effort that it takes to prepare this soup will be well worth it. Use as an appetizer or a meal.

8 – Fresh Vegetable Soup

This soup is enjoyable during any season and is versatile.  Substitute whatever fresh vegetable happens to be in season and use a fat-free broth base such as vegetable, beef or chicken.

9 – Turkey Vegetable Stew

If you prefer stew rather than soup, there are low-fat recipes for you.  Turkey vegetable stew includes many nutritious advantages and the vegetables in this option can be interchangeable. Use white meat such as skinless turkey.

10 – Strawberry Soup

This is a nice and refreshing alternative to the type of soup you are used to.  Strawberry soup is easy to make with an orange juice base.  Fresh strawberries and low-fat yogurt are added to the mix, along with a few other ingredients. It’s refreshing and delicious!

Remember to use fresh ingredients as often as possible when making soups, stews and chili (and use organic products when available).  Most soups can be left to cook in a crock pot to make it even simpler.
