Good morning!

I may not be able to get my run in today. My daughter is sick today so I kept her home. That means no lunch hour run for me . My mom said she might come over this afternoon so I haven't given up all hope.

Laura - 5M is about the same as 8K so you are doing well! The increases happen before you know it!

Only me - I started running in October 2004 so it has been about four months. Which isn't really a very long time.

Hey guys! I haven't run since Sunday. Sunday was 4.25 miles, but the front of my shin started to ache. So, I thought I'd take a couple days off, hoping it doesn't turn into full blown shin splints. The last time I had shin splints, I just couldn't shake them. I wonder if it's a shoe thing? I've been running in the same pair for a while now. Maybe it's time to go shopping.

I have a question for you guys. I mostly run indoors on the treadmill, but it's starting to get a little boring. So, I've decided to try running outdoors more. We just moved a couple months ago into a new neighborhood that has lots of cool trails for walkers and runners. However, there's no way to drive it to measure the distance. I know there are devices out there you can attach to your body to measure distances, but I'm not sure how accurate they are. Any of you have a clue/certain brand that might be more accurate than others? Any suggestions would be GREAT.

Thanks!

well i did my five mile today in 54:30 shaved 3 minutes off my last five mile run. i am so stoked. it went so well. i just feel myself getting better every time i get out and run.

love- i measure all my running routes with my bke. i have a bike computer that is much more acurate than my pedometer. you may also be able to find out how long the trails are some other way. i'm sure someone has it recorded. do you have a neighborhood association or something? running outside is a totally different expirience to running indoors. you'll love it.

LAurieX- welcome to the group.

Annie-thanks for the conversion. 8K is exciting.

9K run this am in 54 minutes. I meant to run 8k/5M, but misjudged how much a couple of detours through different neighbourhoods would add to my distance. A bit slower than usual because I was running through a few cm (one or two inches) of snow or slush even on the roads. They were cleared well overnight, but it's been snowing lightly for the past 36 or so hours, so some snow cover was unavoidable! I keep telling myself that all of this snow, slush and ice is going to make bare roads so much easier and faster in the spring.

Anne--You've really ramped up your running quickly! I started last summer but I'm pretty happy with my current 3X per week for the winter, hopefully going up to 4X per week this spring/summer.

LOVE--I use a garmin forerunner 201, which uses gps to measure pace and distance. It was a christmas gift from dh, but I think they run over US$100, although they've come down in price since the 301 was released. Last summer though, I had dh use his bike computer to measure the distance of a few routes that I used a lot. Like Laura said, they're more accurate than a pedometer and they're still pretty cheap.

Ran/walked my 3.5 mile loop this morning in about 45 minutes. Had a lot more energy today than I have had lately and it felt good. Of course, I still feel like I can't breathe as well, but at least it was a lot less frustrating.

Had my first ultrasound earlier this week, and the baby is looking healthy and strong. So I'll keep running!

Love, I have used accelerometer technology foot pods for distance measurement, and once calibrated on your local track, they are pretty good. I actually get more accurate distances with them than with GPS devices for some reason. I love my Polar 625x system, but it is pretty pricey. You can get cheaper foot pods from Nike for less than $100.

Happy running everybody,

Anne

Thanks for all the advice on the pedometers. I will look around for the brands you suggested and see what I can find.

When you say that some of them aren't that accurate, are they inaccurate in that you've gone further than what is registering or the opposite?

Well, I got up and ran this a.m. and I'm so close to the ten minute mile - 2.98. Hopefully by this time next week I'll be there.

Hope everyone has a great day!

Talking

So I'm my 3rd week on the couch to 5k program. I can definitely feel the difference now. The first week I would start getting out of breath after 30 sec of running and get cramps. Last night I ran the 3 minutes with no problem. I'm so happy!! I can't wait until I can run for a half hour straight. I have to get a pedometer as well to find out how far I'm actually going.

I think I'll buy myself a garmin next month (the 201, I have a HRM). I need to start breaking in a new pair of shoes, but part of me wants to wait until all the snow and slush are gone. Our springs here are SUPER muddy and gross... maybe I'll buy a pair and use them on nicer days and then use my older pair for the really yucky days.

I have had to take a few days off since I have a nasty cold

Good running ladies!

Talking yay yay yay

I am so excited! Finally, a group of gals that share my passion for fitness and running.

o.k., granted... I'm probably old enough to be a mom to most of you , but I love to run! I did my first half marathon in October of last year. I want to do a couple more this year. On a regular basis, I run about 4 or 5 times a week, anywhere from 3 to 7 miles. Last night I did 6 miles. This morning I did the dreaded weight training. Hoping to do one half marathon yet this Spring, and another in the Fall. I'm also a road biker, so need to find some time for a Century and a couple of 100k rides as well.

Looking forward to sharing my fitness trials and triumphs with all of you!

welcome to the group ski. this certainly is a bunch of ladies that love to run. now if we weren't spread out over the entire north america.

i run 4 miles tomorrow. i'm hoping to increase my speed a little. my legs are still sore from my five mile tuesday though so i don't know. we'll see how it goes. my clothes are fitting better which is a fantastic perk to doing something that i already love.

well i'm tired and i find that the more sleep i get, the better my runs are so i'm sure i'll check in tomorrow after my run.

night-

Sleep... what's that?

My kids have all been sick and two of them slept in my bed last night. Grrrr. One was caughing all night and the other had gas pains... so she was squirming and crying and farting all night long . I went for a 13K run last night and finished up at about 10.00pm and then I had a cup of coffee to warm up... what a mistake. I tossed and turned until about 1 am.

I weighed 142.1 this morning which sucks because I was 140.1 on Monday. I have an 8K today on my lunch hour which should help but it is TOM so I probably won't see the scale move much until next week. .

yeah, huge bummer we're not closer. I could use another running buddy!

I ran 4 miles today. Big mistake... I should have taken the day off. I've run four consecutive days and my legs are feeling it! Tomorrow I'll definitely take the day off, in preparation for a long run on Saturday morning. Hope to do 8 miles.

More snow here again last night so I ended up on the treadmill again this morning. I tried to step it up a bit and run fast. I ended up going 1/2 mile longer than I usually do in 30 minutes. I was satisfied . I have ran 3 days so far this week and will be running tomorrow after my 8 am class. Hopefully since next week is March, I will be able to run outside soon.

Just finished my run tonight. It was pretty cold out there tonight, -15C. My legs went numb but it was worth it. I can definitely feel I'm getting better and better every run I run! It was hard at the begining to run, I felt my legs getting tired but after a while it was gone.
Happy runnings chicas!!
