Wow, 45k in one week is incredible given how short a time you've been running. That's also quite a training program you're following. It's seems pretty tough for a first 1/2! I'm pretty happy with the program I'm following, which is actually more like a mix of 2 I found online plus adjustments to my life and the weather around here.
I had a scare, I am running a 10K on Sat and just last night as I was walking from my car splat, fell right on my good knee. It is just bruised Thank god, I was a little scared.
Hope the running is going well. I know March is still winter up here, but usually you get a couple of days that are really warm... none seem to be coming anytime soon. The weather forcast in January was warmer
Good thing it's only a bruise. I have done that before. I was running and I triped over a sidewalk curb and fell right on my knee. It is really scary!
I have been doing well with my program. This week is a slightly lighter week than last. I ran 7K on tues, rest on Wednesday and ran 9K last night. I have 8K today and then 18K on Sunday. Should be interesting.
I am getting close to goal and I'm impatient! Now I am starting to worry about maintaining! It feels like if I increase my calories even slightly my weight will go back up. We shall see I guess.
SweaterGirl -- How did your 10K go? Hope your knee is ok...
I ran a 10.5k today... Good golly but I'm slowwwww it took me 1h15mins... Someone said it should take me an hour... How is everyone else's time? It seems I'm not getting any faster it seems...
Anyways, I have to cut this short, DD want's to dye her hair ...
Ilene: Take you an hour? My running instructor told me it took her a few years to get her 60 minute 10K. I can do a 10K at a rate I wouldn't feel like puking at maybe 65 mins and 60 mins if I over pushed. Due to my partner having leg problems I did my 10K on Sat at 72 mins. We finished, he's okay now and that was the important thing. No worries if you don't have a 60 minute 10K, a lot of people don't when they start. Some people never get down that fast, it all depends. Think of it this way, how many people do you know who run 10K regularly? not too many right? So be proud of what you're doing and don't worry too much about the time. 75 mins for 10.5K is great! Keep it up!
Ilene, I "third" the you're doing great. Just for fun, I looked up the 10k run results from a local race last year. Over 800 people and times ranging from 33 minutes to over 2 hours. The mid point was around 58 minutes, but that's for all ages and both men and women. (And walking is a separate category). So it sounds like you're doing very well for 75 minutes for a training run. You'd almost certainly run a bit faster in a race. And really, it doesn't matter how fast other people run; you're doing it for yourself.
I ran 17km yesterday on roads since the sidewalks and my favourite path were rather slushy/covered in soft snow. (It took me 1:37). I took it fairly easy until the last 4-5k, when I really just wanted to get home, so I ran faster than usual. I often do push a bit faster at the end of a long run, but I think I carried it a bit far this time; my calves are complaining this morning, although I was fine yesterday. I wore my new shoes , which really seems to have helped my knees and feet. Rest day today from running, but I'll try to do a pilates dvd to stretch out my legs a bit this afternoon and maybe a short walk with my girls, and 6 or 8km tomorrow depending on weather and what time I get up.
I'm visiting my mother over easter, and I have the chance to enter a 5k or 10 mile race if I want. So I'm trying to decide if I want to race that weekend and if so, which distance. Currently I'm leaning towards the 5k just because I know I can run it easily and I'm curious as to how fast I could run it on clear roads and in good health. (My one and only 5k was run on somewhat snowy roads and while I was just getting over a major head/chest cold/flu, so I would hope I'm actually capable of running faster than those results now!) But running the 10 mile would take care of my long run for the week! And I could just decide to run it at what I know is a comfortable and doable pace for me rather than racing all out. The down side is that the races are on Friday morning and I'm travelling about 10 hours by car late Thursday afternoon/evening/night. Any suggestions?
Hi guys! I haven't posted for a while, but I'm still running. I'm starting to have a little trouble with my knee. I think it might be my form. I've noticed if my arms are too far out from my body, I do something with my right leg and then my knee kinda tweaks. It happened this a.m., so I stopped and stretched it out. Then I was fine again. I hope this doesn't turn into a big problem. Anyone else out there ever have knee pain?
I ran again this morning and right around mile 2.5, I had the knee issues again. It ended up going away for a while, and I made it to 3.5, but it's really bothering me (mentally). Is it too much to ask to not have anthing to haywire? It's frustrating, especially since I'm finally in a good routine of running. I've been very consistent and careful not to overdo it. Anyone else ever had these issues? Help...
K -- I can't remember if you are just starting to run... But here is what I think... Make sure you have the right runners for YOU... Have you been fitted by someone in a specialty running store... That was the best investment I've ever made.... Secondly, I also USED to get sore knees, since taking Glucosamine twice/day faithfully, I don't have any problems, unless I forget to take it... Make sure you start gradually... Are you weight training to strenghten the muscles around the knee, this also helps tremendously... Keep us posted...
I've had some very good runs this week...I ran 10.5K sunday, did a leg workout on Monday, ran to and from the gym on Tuesday (2.5K there and back)worked back and biceps, Wednesday ran to the gym again worked shoulders, Today I worked legs again only at the gym, no run, Friday I am aiming for a run to the gym again with a chest and tricep workout... Food had been good calorie wise but not as clean as I'd like...But I'm feeling good and that's a bonus ...
Thanks Ilene. I've been running since December, and before December I would run on and off. I haven't been doing any strength training, so I guess I need to start. I just have trouble fitting in weights, time-wise. I just looked on the coolrunning website too, and they said basically the same thing. I never would have thought I needed to strength train on my legs, when I run. It makes sense though. I'll try it.
So, what kind of weight training do you do for your legs? Do you just work the Quad muscle?
I agree with Ilene. It's probably either you need new/better shoes or you need to do some strength training for you legs. I was getting some knee pain last month/earlier this month, especially after longer runs and replacing my shoes has done wonders. I did 17k on Sunday and had little/no discomfort after, at least from my knees.
I did a short run this am, just under 6k. I slept in a bit, and had to force myself out the door. I didn't get into the run until about 25 minutes or so into it, by which time I needed to head home to get ds off to school. But I'm still glad I went! I made cookies with my dd this morning, so I'm going to take them for a walk this afternoon to get myself away from the cookies.
K -- I work ALL the muscles of my legs... If you would only work on quads then the hams get weak or your glutes would, you need to get a good all around (the legs) that is workout... For example this morning I worked legs at the gym, I did 4 sets of each exercise with reps of 12, 10, 8 and 6, ususally going heavier with each set...
1. Squats
2. Leg Extensions
3. Leg Curls
4. 4 sets of wallking lunges 15 each side...
It took me 40 minutes, I was in I was out! On leg day I don't run though, I give the poor ole legs a break ...
