Talking Cool Runners

Hi All,

I hope this is okay, but I would like to start another running thread. It seems there is quite a bit of interest in the activty here and the other thread seems to have upward of 300 posts.

Anyway I am on the DL from running for the next 2.5 weeks, but am looking forward to getting back to it.

How is everyone doing with their running anyway? Looks like the week of the 16th is suppose to be a deep freeze up here, this week on the other hand we're suppose to have some very warm days.

Cheers and cool runnings,

Ali

Hi,

I would like to join this thread. I started running in July with 18 minute miles. I am currently averaging 12 minute miles. I am working on getting that down to 11 minute mile (which I can do until I get to hills) When I run outside I go anywhere from 3.35 miles to 6.6 miles (more common to do 5 miles). I am working up to 7 miles ( I enetered a race Jan 22). I do interval training on the tredmil at least one day a week.

I have not lost weight 3 or 4 months. I can't seem to get my eating under control. I keep telling myself OK because I am not gaining weight. But to be honest it is not OK I need to loose 50 more pounds ( i have lost 36).

Hope everyone as a nice day

I started running in October 2004. I started running 5K as my 'long distance' run. But I am now up to 13K. My shorter runs range from 7 - 9K. I do them on my lunch hour.

I ran 7K this afternoon. I am hoping to weigh in at about 146 by Friday... Yikes. Could be a close one. But I have a 10K run scheduled for Thursday night. He He He, I know that is cheating a bit but I know the scale will be down no matter how much water I drink before bed! 145 would rock my world!

I am planning to run the ING half marathon in May and the Fall Colours full marathon in October.

Sweater Girl - I didn't realize you had lost 100 lbs!!!! Hats off to you!

cac - I am a Canuk so you will have to talk kilometers or I don't know what you mean ! LOL. My math skills are not great or I would convert. Hang on it's a 2.2 ratio right. That means 6.6 miles is 14.52 K. Girl that is FAR! I am doing my first 14.5K run on January 30 according to my handy-dandy training schedule. Yikes!

Hello ladies,

Good to have a new running thread! I was sort of intimidated by the length of the other one.

I started running in July '03 and just finished my first marathon on Sunday. So I'm more of a 'sitter' than a 'runner' for the next couple weeks, but I'll be back at it soon.

I like thinking in kilometers better than miles. 10K is 6.2 miles, 8K is almost exactly 5 miles. Sounds more impressive with the larger numbers for the same distance. But for better or worse, miles are built into the American landscape with major roads being 1 mile apart from the old land partitioning days, so miles are easier for me, just less impressive sounding.

Ali, hope your recovery is going well, and you're not going too stir crazy. cac, I found it harder to lose weight after I started running, and I've lost, umm, about 115-120 so far and maintained that for more than a year. But I did drop several sizes even while my weight stayed about the same.

I started running using the couch25K program last summer. I'm currently running 3X a week 6-8km each time (I've gone 10k once or twice, but not recently). I'm about to start increasing that distance at least one day a week though, as I want to run a 1/2 marathon in May. Really, I just want to finish without collapsing, but I'm hoping for around 2 hours based on my current pace.

This morning's run was a crisp 6.7k at -15C. At least the wind was fairly calm. I love running along the bike/walking path by my house as the sun comes up over the city. It's actually plowed out even in winter, except for the odd drift here and there from the wind overnight. Going through ankle-knee deep snow really gets my heart rate up (and slows me down considerably). I'm really appreciating the jacket I picked up at MEC's after Christmas sales. It keeps me warm without having to resort to zipping the fleece liner out of my regular winter jacket to wear the shell. I also bought coolmax socks there, but I haven't noticed any significant difference comfort wise between them and my usual cotton socks. And I love the forerunner dh got me for Christmas. I didn't realize how far I was actually running last fall until I started running along the path again with it. Further than I'd thought!

Anne, I'm still in awe of your marathon finish. Take your well deserved rest this week!

wndranne, a first marathon huh? that is fantastic. i hope to be ready for our marathon in dec. i've got a whole year to train, and this is the year i am going to do it.

so needless to say, i am still running, and its going good. right now i am working on the basics like pase and form. only running 3 miles 4 times a week. working on strength training and stretching on off days. once i feel confident with my pace keeoing skills i plan to up the speed slightly and then start working on distance. i need to start setting mini goals for myself so that i am on track to be ready for a marathon. mini goal one- to have a marathon training plan ready to implement by feb. 1st. seems easy enough, then i can go from there.

happy trails all.

Hi All,

I just found this site today and I must say that so far I love it. I started running in January of last year. Followed the Couch-2-5K plan as well. In mid February I ran my first full 3 miles. Since then I have worked up to running 10K as my longest run (have run it a few times). I stopped all forms of exercise in December. My daughter got the chicken pox and since I hadn't had them we figured I would get them for sure. So, I decided to just focus on getting ready for Xmas in the event I got sick. I never did get the pox but I can't say I'm sorry for the rest. December is such a busy month as it is!

But now I've got to get my groove back. I'm having some trouble. I've run only once this week. I've put on about 5 pounds over the holidays and it HAS to come off. Just over a year ago I weighed 184 pounds. I worked hard to lose 45 pounds and I don't want to gain it back.

So...here I am. Ready to run. I'm glad to have some company.

Hey Cool Runners !!

I love the thought of a new thread, thanks Ali...

I have been running since Dec 03... I have lost 16# and have gone from a size 14 to a (as of this afternoon, drum rollllll please) size 6 ... Isn't that freakin' awesome ?!?! I can't believe it myself ... I've never worn a size 6! EVER, even when I was 6 years old .... I run 3-5 times/week, outside as of Christmas day I can run 8K and on a treadmill, only because of sheer boredom I run 5K, but I like to build my speed on the treadmill though so I motivate myself in that way......

Only Me -- I love running in this -15C cold weather, specially if it's sunny and not windy... I get excited when I wake up and it's a cold, crisp, sunny day because it usually means I will have a great run... Did you get your forerunner at the Running Room? How much was it?

Someday I will run some kind of race... I'll probably start with a 10K since I can do 8K at the moment... Do you seasonned runners/marathoners think that's a good idea?

I think my favorite race distance so far is a half-marathon. It isn't so short that I feel a need to try to go really fast (a relative term!), like I do in a 5K. It is also long enough to feel like a significant accomplishment. On the other hand it isn't so long that it really, really hurts.

Ilene, I'm sure you could do a 10K tomorrow if you wanted to! Lots of good choices for you. But maybe do an inexpensive race to see if you like it. I LOVE racing, but some people just don't. Definitely good to try one out and see how you like it.

What nasty weather today for a run! I have a 9.5K planned for tonight. I am doing a half marathon training program with a partner and the distance of the mid week run is starting to increase. Now we have a 13K Sunday run and a 9.5K midweek run. Even as I am running the distance, I am amazed at myself for doing it.

Last week we ran in 10 cm of snow and tonight we'll run in 10 cm of slush! But I won't complain because it will also be about +10 degrees.

I am having trouble figuring out how many calories I should be eating when I am running these distances. I still want to lose weight, but I don't want to feel tired and weak when I am running either. I count WW points and for the longest time I was trying to get by on only 20 points a day without eating my flex points or my activity points. I recently stumbled across a web site that explained all about calorie counting. I did the math and 20 pts works out to roughly 1000 calories a day which is lower than the recommended 1200. So when I factored in the flexpoints (divided over 7 days) it works out to about 1250 calories. No wonder I was STARVING! I should have been eating my flex points. My question is? What about the activity points? Will I lose less if I eat them. I guess the only way to find out is try it! Anyone out there had any experience with this?

Hi guys!

I just joined 3fatchicks yesterday and this looks liek a great thread!

Right now I'm 20 and working towards an engineering degree. I used to be hardcore runner girl and 25 punds lighter back in high school. While I don't care if I can run a 5:30 mile ever again (I don't understand how i used to go that fast..eek) i would like to get back into good running shape.

I'm decent still. About two weeks ago i went and ran 7 miles strait just to see if I could do it, and after I got past mile 4 it was no problem to finish it up. The problem is I usually only run twice a week and my plan is to change that.

That's awesome that you ran a marathon! I keep thinking about trying to train for one. Do you have any advice on starting to train for one? And how long did it take you to train?

Well I did it! Forced myself out of bed early this morning and hit the treadmill for a 3 mile run. That's my second run this week. I'm a little sore this time since I've definately lost conditioning in the 6 weeks that I haven't run. But I did it!

My goal is to get up again tomorrow morning and hit the treadmill. Depending on how I feel I may have to do a walk/run workout. But at least I'll be doing it. Getting used to getting up earlier is the BIG obstacle for me.

Have a great day everyone.

I just got back from a 9.5K run. I was nice and warm out, but the wind was stong.

gam - getting there is half the battle! I have to force myself down to the change room on my lunch hour when all I want to do is sit at my desk and eat lunch! I can't imagine how hard it is to get up early to do it... I hate mornings!
