Glad to see everyone is still making progress.... Despite my best intentions (taking shoes, etc.) on vacation, I didn't keep up. Did I mention the vacation was to Arizona?? I tried the first night, after a LONG day of travel and swimming and heat, and simply couldn't function in the workout room, even though it was air conditioned. The next few days I just tried to stay hydrated and make good food choices, and stay active in the pool.

Tonight meeting with a personal trainer with my husband to get a new strength training routine. I will probably be glad I enjoyed a few days' rest!

Later this week I guess I will start over with Week 5 Day 1. I'm not sure how well it will work. With the strength training, my legs may be too worn out to pick right back up.

Momof5k, I'm super slow, too! When I calculate my average speed and figure out it would take like an hour and a half to finish a 5k..... lol, well, I just don't think about it! Once I get up to half an hour of running, I figure I'll try to pick up the speed a little at a time.

Just did W6D2 last night on my treadmill. I'm excited about tomorrows workout....25 minutes!

I was planning on doing my first 5K on Oct 3rd but dang I feel like I would be too slow at this point. On my treadmill I'm running at 4.2. I think it would take me an hour to do the 5K.

I'm glad to see this thread become active again! Congrats on your progress, Mom4Life. I'm still struggling with asthma and 100 degree heat here. It's been so hot the past week that I think I've only gone out to walk once or twice. I may need to fire up the elliptical if this goes on much longer.

Velveteen--I finished reading your book. Thanks again; it was really good and inspirational! Shall I send it back to you, or to someone else in our group (as you once suggested) ?

I hope you're all doing well!

Hello everyone! Nice to hear from some of you again.

I finished W8D1 yesterday and, although I am still running S L O W L Y, I am doing it! I kind of miss the intervals though..not really because I am needing the break (as I am actually managing the 25 minutes fairly well at my pace) but it is kind of boring without any variety.

Perhaps it would be more interesting if I ran outside rather than on my treadmill in my basement but...I am not ready to take that leap just yet.

What book did you read? I love to read...although shipping it to me in Canada would probably be rather cost prohibitive.

Hi all! I kind of skipped over week 8 and went directly to 9 it wasn't really my intention but week 8 is only 3 minutes longer than week 7 and I thought to myself, "if I can do 28 I can do 30!" so that's what I did. I am basically now just going every other day with a goal of 30 min (5 min warmup and 5 min cooldown) and some days I don't manage it and some days I do... The point is to get out there and give it my all and I'm generally pleased with the outcome.

Windchime- glad you liked the book! Did you get any nuggets from it? My adapted motto that I use every day is INO. Whether it be about food or exercise, this really works! I'm happy to have the book go to someone else; if we can share with each other, why not?

Momof5K I sent the book from the Netherlands to Windchime and even then it wasn't so much. I don't think it would be that bad to Canada! But you guys can talk about it, are what you want to do!

Momof5k, I sent you a PM. The book is "Secrets of a Former Fat Girl" and it's just a really fun read, but has useful stuff in it. I will send it when I get your address.

Guess what I found out this week. Stress can trigger asthma. Since work has been nothing BUT stress lately, that makes a lot of sense! So hopefully if I can manage my stress level, then the asthma will go away and I can start running again. Hopefully by then it won't be 100 friggin degrees outside!

I'm still here! I'm glad someone revived this thread. DH and I did not run much while we were on vacation, but got back to it after we returned. But I'm not doing so hot at it. I did run on the treadmill while on vacation a couple of times but we were so busy and we walked tons. When we got home DH and I decided that we would do week 7 over, but even that has been challenging for me. I cannot for the life of me seem to run longer than 20-23 minutes without pooping out. And if it's humid forget it! I've decided that I'm just going to do what I can whether it's 20 minutes or 28 minutes--I don't really care. Any movement is better than none. I'm not sure if I'll ever get to 30 minutes of solid running and I'm not sure if that is still a goal for me. This morning I went alone (with my dog), DH had a beastly headache, and i went about 23.5 minutes. I did have to stop and walk for a block at about the halfway point, but I'm not going to beat myself up over it.

Precisely what I've been thinking Losermom.

I've been doing this running thing since May 8th. My longest run at one time has only been 18.5 minutes. But I can go out and do 4-5 miles 3x week and that is good enough for me. My overall times are slooowly getting faster. So I am either starting to run faster or walk less without even realizing it.

I am starting to panic a little though. My first race is in 16 days. It's a little 6k (3.72 miles) in the next town over. I regularly run 4-5 but it is still flipping me out. I'm used to running in the evening when there is less humidity and I am terrified of having a bout of runners IBS. I've had a few episodes already and I don't know what to do to prevent it. Any ideas?

ZinkeMom- for runners IBS (im assuming irritable bowel?? also known as runners tots--gross, i know)--- i sometime get that still, especially on race day, when my nerves are already hanging by a thread!! Some runners will take immodium ad or other such product before the run, in the morning, as directed on the box, and they will SWEAR it makes a difference...i tried it once, and did not work for me any better, but maybe i didnt use it correctly?? Also, for myself personally, i found if i avoid ALL DAIRY the night before and morning of, it makes a BIG difference!! Since ive been on this diet and have not been drinking milk or eating yogurt i have had no problems.....except the two times when i stole a couple bites of my BF's ice cream the night before i ran, both times the next morning during my run i had to find a bathroom!! Coincidence???

Hmmm. I'll have to watch for the dairy connection. I've cut most of it out but still eat some cheese. One more reason to stick to my veg*n plan. Thanks for the input.

Tonight's run sucked. I biked one mile, ran one, and biked the mile home. I'm trying to get used to riding again. It was only my third time out and my behind still hurts from the 7 miles I foolishly did on Monday night.

I had plans to run my heart out for that one mile to see what kind of time I could get on it. I wasn't thinking about the humidity killing me. I swear it is 98% out there. Felt like I was swallowing clouds while trying to gasp for air. Needless to say I did not run my best time. Oh well. There will be other nights.

Hey ladies,
I sometimes post on the boards but usually I just look around and see what others have to say. Friday, I did my last day of W4, the 3 minute jog/1.5 min walk/5 min jog/2.5 min walk. I was just wondering - what speed do you usually jog on? I always run on my treadmill because there's a lot of traffic around my house and my basement is also nice and cool. I have found that the 3 minute-rs don't kill me but the 5's sure do. I was going to move on to W5 but there's no way I can do it. I have been running almost every day M-F, but last Thurs & Fri I didn't run it full out because I couldn't make it past the 2nd 3-minuter. Any tips on how to build endurance? The W3 was way easy and after 1 week of it I was ready for W4. Last Sunday I did W4D1 and it went really well. Monday was good, too, as was Tuesday, then Wednesday I started becoming out of breath and not really able to finish. It's not that I'm out of shape, I just for some reason was getting really tired. Any tips on how you build your endurance? I usually run between 5.9-6.2 MPH and walking is usually 3.0-3.3 or 3.4 MPH. Thanks for your support - I LOVE that I can see how others are doing and we can all share our struggles and triumphs! Best of luck!

Ashley

I would slow down a bit. You are trying to run at a 10 min mile which is pretty fast for a beginner runner. I would bump it down to 5mph and see how you feel on a 5 min run.

It was still pretty humid out for today's run. It felt like I was doing horrible. I was pleasantly surprised when I got home and realized it was probably my fastest 5k time so far.

Thanks for your advice - it worked! I ran between 5-5.4 and it was a LOT easier, I didn't stop at all. I didn't realize how fast I was actually trying to run. Thank you!
