Windchime, it appear that the powers that be did not want you to do w5d3! The time will be right soon. New shoes might be just what you need. I would go for it! I don't think that 3 days off is such a big deal. Life happens!
We always run in our neighborhood on the sidewalks. We live in an older neighborhood with plenty of sidewalks, hills and trees. I enjoy the change of scenery. Momof5k, I've never run on a treadmill--I'm afraid that I would fall off!
I was thinking of doing w6d1 this morning but it's raining lightly right now. DH is gone for the weekend, on a silent retreat, and plans to run while he's gone. So I feel like I need to keep up with him!
hey chicks... looks like week 5 is a do-over. It's been three days since day 2 so I am sure I won't be able to do the 20 min run now.
we are on vacation next week but it looks like we are literally minutes from Tiergarten (the biggest park in Berlin) so we are definitely bringing our gear to do our workouts!
Velveteen--don't be so sure about that! I did W5D3 tonight after having done D2 on Tuesday! I feel like a million bucks, you guys--I did not think I was going to be able to do that.
So: The answer to the question "When do I know I'm ready to move on?" is this: You are ready now. Woo hoo!!!!!!!!!!
Windchime, way to go on W5D3 - and good luck to everybody starting on week 6!
I did W2D1 this morning, 6 intervals of 90 sec running and 2 minutes walking. The weather was nice and the scenery where I run too, but I didn't spend much time looking at the river - I spent most of the time trying to breathe! Hopefully this will improve as I get in better shape. Losing some weight would help too, but the weight is coming off slowly. I try to take my time this time, and work through some other weight related problem areas while losing weight. Right now I'm doing The Body Image Workbook (by Thomas Cash). It's really good and I want to work through some of my emotional/mental issues related to body issues and weight too, while I do the C25K.
And as for motivation to keep up with the program; it's inspiring to read what you guys write about - the thoughts and experiences of other C25K runners.
Good job on W2D1, mette! The breathing will definitely get easier. If a fat old asthmatic lady like me can improve, then so can you!
My plan today (W6D1) was going to be to actually try to hit the distance that the CoolRunning website says I should be hitting:
3 mins walking 1/4 mile (I can do this)
5 mins jogging = 1/2 mile (almost there)
8 mins = 3/4 mile (Oh I am SO SURE! no way!)
I quickly realized that I would not finish the night if I tried to reach the distance milestones, so for now I am continuing to just go for the time goals. Being as heavy as I am (still over 200), I don't want to push too hard and injure myself. I keep thinking about how much easier this will be, hopefully, when I'm 20 or 30 pounds lighter.
Keep running, chicks! Velveteen, are you in Berlin yet? Have you had a chance to run?
Hi folks,
I attempted C25K last spring but I had major mental blocks and couldn't seem to get past week 3 for anything. I made a second attempt last fall but then ended up sidelined with PF for a few months.
Last month my best friend from out of state decided that we needed to do a 5k when I see her around Labor Day. Those plans then turned into a 10K. We finally settled on a beautiful 8 mile race.
I started running on May 8th. I live on a dead end dirt road and it is exactly 1 mile to the stop sign and back. I'm not following the C25K but I would guess that I am probably between weeks 3 and 4. I have noticed that my last few wogs have been a little further and a bit easier than the last few weeks.
I just read through the entire thread and reading about you guys all conquering your fears is giving me hope that I can do this. I have a 5k tentatively scheduled for July 18th as a midpoint to my 8 miler. I can do this!

hi chicks, have to make this fast as we are about to leave for Berlin!
I did not attempt W5D3, but we restarted yesterday. we've got our gear with us and are going to run at Tiergarten Park, very close to where we are staying (google it, it's an amazing place!!). I am certain I will manage the whole W5 this week.
Welcome to the newcomers! I will be a bit more personal when I am back in the weekend!
I'm very sure that DH & I are NOT running at the speed suggested. I am the tortoise...slow, but sure.
That's good to know! I'm happy to just keep plugging away for the alotted time; if the speed comes later that'll be fine but for now I don't think it's realistic! I'm pretty slow, too; I quickly run out of steam if I try to go faster. I'm still pretty impressed with myself, though, LOL!
Zinkemomx2--8 mile race, wow! I'm impressed! I'm just now playing with the idea of trying to find a local 5k for when I'm done with the program and even that idea scares me. The last day of running this week is 25 minutes and I'm a little freaked out about that. I just have to remind myself to calm down; that I was freaked out about the 20 minute run, too, and I was able to do that so I should just stay focused.
I envy you your dirt road; I'm having to go to the high school track and it's really boring to keep circling that.
I just got finished doing two 14 minute miles. I am slow and that is just fine for me.
As for the 8 mile race some days I feel very overwhelmed. Then I think to myself that I have 13 weeks left to train and that I can do 3+ miles now. I think anything faster than 2:30 gets medals so my goal is to just make sure I can keep that pace for at least 6 miles at home. There are over 2000 runners for the race so I am sure that the energy will help a lot.
The dirt road is pretty boring too. It is half mile down and then back so I look at everything 2x a mile. It would be better if I didn't have idiot loser neighbors. If I run the whole length of the road (past even more idiots) it is a 1.5 mile loop. It has gotten kinda boring already and I've only been doing it a month. My only other options are the treadmill that I HATE, drive 15 miles to the paved trail, or to run on the state highway. The traffic doesn't bother me but there is so much crown on the road that it bothers my hips so that is out.
What is this iTunes app that everyone is talking about for the podcasts? I am kinda iTune illiterate. I do have a Nano that I use but am having trouble getting the songs organized the way I want. I have country, hard rock, and some of Jillian's podcasts. For some reason I am not able to make separate playlists the way I want.
Most new runners do not, in fact, and regardless of what Cool Running tells you, do a ten-minute mile.
No kidding. I still don't. I gave up very quickly on the speeds estimated in their charts. No matter. I did just fine using the time parameters. Then, when I finished the program and was doing 30 minutes (but not 3 miles), I just then started adding distance and eventually got up to the 3 miles.
Then I started doing very moderate and informal intervals, and I was amazed at how that really started improving my overall pace.
