Windchime W7 is all 3 days @ 25 min I do hope you get the book soon!
I have a lot of problems breathing with the humidity so high - I don't know if it's asthma but it's like there is something stuck in my throat and I can't "clear" it out, if that makes sense? What does asthma actually feel like?
I know you are frustrated, but just wait it out, it's going to be ok and you'll be able to move on soon!
and Mom, I agree with Robsia; it could be any and all of those factors. I think the most important thing is that you keep trying. It took me 1 extra attempt to get W7D1 and 2 more after that to accomplish D2. Part of the reason we are supposed to do it every other day is because 1) we get a rest day in between and 2) then we also don't go too many days so that we can keep up with the momentum.
Hi all! I've been reading this thread from time to time to see what to expect in my upcoming weeks, but haven't posted anything. Today (after work) is W5D1. Week 4 was hard at the beginning, but I finished strong thanks to some advice I found at runnersworld.com. I was having trouble getting through the 5 minute runs, so I slowed down (I'm using a treadmill)--who'd have guessed?!
Slowing down my pace allowed me to conquer the 3- and 5-minute runs and even increase my speed a little bit on the last day in the last couple runs. Several articles at runnersworld.com suggest to start slow in a workout and try to increase your speed at the end, to learn pacing and increase endurance when you're tired.
I can't believe by the end of the week I'm supposed to be running 20 minutes straight! Fingers crossed....
The slowing down does help. The longest I've been able to run before today was about 14 mins with the following intervals only being 2-4 mins long. I slowed down today and was able to run 18 and then 7. Of course slowing down made my legs tired faster which I thought was ironic.
I am so excited to get out again. I run on gravel roads and I've been having a heck of a time with rocks getting in my shoes. I've tried just tightening them up but that just made my feet go numb. After searching runnersworld I found the lacing pattern for heels that slip. My heels fit fine but I am hoping maybe if I can tighten up the top just that little bit I won't have to stop to empty out as many rocks.
Renee--the book came today! I sent you a PM as well but wanted to also post it here. Thank you so much for sharing it with me; I can't wait to get started on it.
I have a doctor's appointment on Wednesday morning. I'm tired of this heavy, short-of-breath feeling in my chest. Hopefully she can give me something that'll help me out and then I can get back on track. I'm jealous of all you girls posting about your success!
Good luck Windchime. I can only imagine how frustrating it is to be working and your body not responding the right way!
Did W5D1 yesterday and was surprised how well it went! All of the running intervals, I started slow and increased my speed slightly over the interval. After only four full weeks, my cardio endurance has definitely improved, and based on my legs being sore every day, they must be getting stronger.
Thanks to this program, I'm doing something I have never even considered... taking my running shoes with me on vacation! Not that I'm addicted to running (yet). It's just that I've made enough progress that I don't want to risk falling behind. I'm already nervous about the 20-minute run at the end of the week, but so far this program hasn't let me down, so I'm going to trust it...
Zinke - interesting... maybe there is a lacing thing that will help me with my foot issue??? do I just go to runnersworld.com and search?
Windchime - hooray! you received the book! I'm so glad and I really do hope you get something out of it!! good luck at the doc's!
Lisa - it's an amazing feeling after a short time isn't it? and I do find that pace is EVERYTHING! in the beginning I was struggling with my pace and with my breathing - first I worked on my pace (I found a song that just felt comfortable and made that my first running song on my iPod) then I relaxed about the breathing (I thought I *had* to breathe in through my nose and out through my mouth and count to 3 each time... all that was making me nuts AND causing a feeling of almost hyperventilating!) and now I've got it! And I may be slow, but this is the pace that works for me for now and I'm in week 7 so it can't be that bad, right? way to go bringing your running shoes on holiday! I did that too because I didn't want to fall behind either it makes PERFECT sense! Good luck with the 20 minutes... general consensus has been that it's a "piece of cake" once you've accomplished it. YOU CAN DO IT!!!
Velvet - I just searched for lacing patterns. I went out this morning all excited about possibly not getting any rocks in my shoes. It was a total bust. It was causing the instep to pull up higher and after only about 90 seconds of warm up walking I stopped to retie them. I'll keep playing with them though to see what I can find.
Hi girls, looks like you're all still at it! My visit at the docs was productive, I think. I've been given a steroid inhaler to puff on, morning and evening and then I am to take a couple of good puffs of the other one 30 minutes before exercise. So we'll see how that goes! I am guessing I'll need to go back a week or so, maybe to week 5 or 6, not sure. I will probably wait a couple of days to let the asthma settle down and then give it a shot; meanwhile, I'll keep up with the 3.5 mile walks.
I finally completed week 7 day 1!
I slowed my pace and did it pretty "easily". I swear I must be the slowest runner here! I keep looking at the coolrunning site and seeing what we are "supposed to" be running during then 25 minute run this week (2 1/4 miles!) and I am no where near that! Today I just hit 2.15 miles including the 5 minute warm up and 5 minute cool down. <<sigh>> Oh well. At least I did the full 25 minutes today without any walking and for now I will just focus on the time and hope the distance/speed increases over time.
Windchime: I hope this med change will be what you need to keep at it! In the meantime, the 3.5 mile walks are awesome!!
Zinke - sorry to hear it was a bust! what a bummer! I will check out the site as well. hopefully you'll find the solution soon for a no-rock zone (at least shoe wise )
Windchime - keep us posted how it goes when you pick it back up again. No shame in going back a couple of weeks - maybe it will go smoother now!
Mom - I don't think you are the slowest!! I'm pretty sure I'm quite slow as well! My goal is simply accomplishment of time and not distance. I've signed up for "Start-to-Run" program in the town I live in that starts in September and I figure then I'll work on other things like time and speed, but right now, what I think is most important is accomplishing the actual minutes spent running (well, jogging! ). We all have to start somewhere right? Congrats on finishing W7D1!!!
Thanks! Seven (well...really eight ) weeks ago, I NEVER would have thought I could run for 25 straight minutes as the 60 second intervals weren't easy so I am pleased enough with that. W7D2...tomorrow I hope!
hello everyone, coming in sort of late I think.
I'm on W4D2, I downloaded the app onto my phone. I'm loving it. I look forward to running.
I do my runs after dinner, so my husband can watch the kids.
momof5k - don't worry, i did Week 7 - Day 1 today and i did 2.30 miles including the warm up/cool down. It's better to take it slow than do any damage or cause any injury. Speed will come one day.
It's hot here again today. It was probably close to 100 this afternoon so I was careful to stay inside where it is cool. Even so, I felt like I had a tight ace bandage wrapped around my chest. I took a couple of puffs on my inhaler before walking (as the doctor instructed) and still probably only was able to go 2 miles. I started on my regular route and realized quickly that I wasn't going to be able to make the hill and had to turn around.
I am really, really hatin' on this stupid asthma! I feel like I'm not going to be able to run--how can I, when I can barely walk without feeling like my lungs are going to collapse?
