Sometimes you just get pains even if you do stretch. I have always religiously stretched before and after I run and I have three times had to take several weeks off from running for various injuries and pains, and I have been running since November last year.
At the moment I haven't been able to run for about 8 days because last time I was doing a nice gentle 3 miler and suddenly the muscles below my calf in my right leg started to hurt and it got VERY painful very quickly. I had to turn around and limp home. It's a pain as I was meant to be doing a 10K today. I did try to go out again on Friday so see if it was any better but I only managed 20 steps before I was limping again!
thanks a lot ladies! I do that yoga pose as part of my unwind routine before bed but I will have to work it into my pre-run stretches. I'm going to start week 4 tomorrow hopefully.
I'm bad. I rarely stretch at all. Sometimes on my 3-5 mile runs I will stop for a minute at my turnaround point and do a quick stretch just to catch my breath. I know I should.
I had a personal best this weekend. I was out of town at my mom's and asked my Poppa if he wanted to ride his bike while I ran. I'm used to running after dinner in 70-80* temps. We went out at 6:30am and it was only 50*. I had plans to do 5-6 miles but was dying after 2 miles. We got home and I hopped online to check my mileage. No wonder I was so tired. I did 2.7 miles with a 12:20 pace with two hills. I've been averaging between 13:30-14 min/mile on FLAT ground.
OK, girls, I'm reviving our thread! How is everyone doing? I'm finally able to breathe again and did W5D1 today. I did it on the streets instead of the track and did the whole thing except for about 2 minutes where I was supposed to be running but was on a hill. Yes, I'm a wimp. I also realize that it would probably be a good thing to take a couple of puffs on the inhaler next time before I go out. I think I did pretty good, considering it's been a couple of months (I think?) since I ran.
I just checked my spreadsheet. I started running on May 3, and I was 223.7 pounds. It was a LOT easier tonight at 199.2...basically 25 pounds down. I do think I could still use a butt-bra, but there is a whole lot LESS shakin' goin' on back there than there was before! I hope I can keep it up. I think it speeded up my weight loss last time so I'm ready to give it another try.
My running career was a limited engagement only. DH is still running. He goes at least 3x a week for 30-40 minutes a time. I'm not sure what's going on, but the top of my right foot is numb and it's been numb for about a month now. Saw the dr about it and he thought I had a pinched nerve in my back, but my back doesn't hurt at all. So he's not concerned. I'm back at water aerobics, my preference, and still ride my stationary bike 5-6x a week, along with weight training 3x a week. So it's all good. I'm pulling for all of you! I think that I just wanted to prove to myself that I really could run. I never got past 28 minutes, but I did a real good 25 minutes consistently. I may get back to it in the future, but for now I need a break. I sometimes wonder if I did it just to get DH back into running. His family has a long history of heart disease, with his father dying at age 57 of a heart attack and his 54 yr old brother having a heart attack last year (he survived thank goodness!). DH has lost 20+ lbs so he is at least half way to his goal.
I am still running and have just signed up for my first 5K! Yikes!
I am now working on improving my speed a bit so I take a walk break or two sometimes but I am okay with that. right now I am running between 2+ and 3.5 miles about 3 times a week and am hoping to up that to 4 or 5 times.
I do miss our regular updates on this thread though. Thanks Windchime for reviving it! I am so glad you are able to get back to running.
Losermom: sounds like you are getting plenty of exercise and that both you and your hubby benefitted from the C25K program.
Salsachip: WTG! Week 5 was a big one for me...especially day 3. You can do it!!
Hello all! Mind if I join in?
I'm currently on W5 and I'll be doing Day 2 tomorrow. I just started running outside instead of on the treadmill and I'm loving it! I'm nervous yet excited about day 3 this week--20 whole minutes? I haven't run that many minutes straight for over 20 years! But, I'm going for it!
I'm also signing up for my first 5K which happens to be taking place on Day 3 of Week 9. I figured why not sign up, it'll be a fun way to end the program.
Welcome, Sandye! Yes, the 20 minute run is something that intimidates all of us and I have to tell you that it wasn't too bad when I did it! I was only a few days past that when the asthma hit so I only did it a couple of times. My plan this time around is to just start running on my normal walking course. I walk 3.5 miles a night, so that's the 5K ! Part of it is a pretty good hill and I poop out on that, plus I walk that last 1 1/2 miles but I'm working on increasing. I need to load my player up with some better music. Some of my songs seemed OK but when I get out there, they make me want to nap instead of run, LOL.
I ran for the full 30 minutes tonight...first time ever! I was actually supposed to do 28 minutes for week 8, but actually felt so good doing it that I didn't pay enough attention to my stopwatch and ran over. Since I only had about 45 seconds to go to reach 30 minutes, I just ran a little longer. I am still in shock that I actually ran for 30 minutes straight. My legs were a little wobbly for a few minutes, but I recovered quickly and actually had enough energy to walk my dog a mile afterward.
Windchime~ Thanks so much! Yes, I have to admit when I first saw Wk5's schedule I was petrified, but after Day 1 I felt much better about it for some reason. I got out and did Day 2 today and feel even more confident that I'll be able to get those 20 mins in on Saturday!
I did my second 25 minute run last night, and I'm so happy. I never thought I'd actually be able to do it. I'm looking forward to finishing the C25K and running my first 5K on October 3rd.
I just finished W1 of C25K. It went ok except for some major fluid retention. Did any of you hold onto a lot of water weight when you started running? Like 6 lbs of water? I've been taking step classes and am an avid hiker so I wasn't really expecting to retain water since my leg muscles aren't really weak. I'm not sore at all, but my jeans went from fitting to very very tight in a span of 3 days lol. Just wondering if this is normal and if it will go away as I progress through the plan.
