The Flexitarian Diet: 7 Great Snacks

The flexitarian diet consists of mostly vegetarian foods, but you can still have meat occasionally without feeling guilty. Depending on what level you are on, you go anywhere between 2 to 5 days a week without eating meat.

The flexitarian diet allows you to eat between 1200 to 1800 calories a day. This may seem like a small amount, but when you eat the right foods and decrease your meat consumption, you really do not need that much. It is recommended that you eat 3 meals and 2 light snacks each day.

1. Nuts and Seeds

Nuts and seeds are extremely nutritious, as they are high in natural healthy oils and protein which makes them a great substitute for meat. You can eat these raw or lightly toasted; by themselves or mixed in a trail mix. You can also mix the nuts and seeds with agave nectar, and press them into a dish and freeze for about 30 minutes before eating.

2. Fruits

Fruits are a great food to snack on in between meals. Not only will they fill you up, but they will also give you all the energy which you need until it is time for your next meal. You can make fruit salads, and for extra sweetness, dip your fruit such as pears, apples or bananas into dark chocolate.

3. Vegetables

Dark leafy green vegetables such as broccoli, kale and collards will give you the highest amount of calcium and chlorophyll which your body needs. You can eat them plain, or in a salad with a light salad dressing. Try to consume a variety of all the different colored vegetables as well.

4. Yogurt

Yogurt is another great snack which you can mix up with other foods such as fresh fruits and berries. You can also add your favorite nuts and seeds with dried berries such as goji or acai berries. If you are craving for something sweet, add some agave nectar to your yogurt.

5. Whole Wheat Crackers

Crackers go with just about any food! Mash up some avocado and top it off with a tomato slice, a cilantro sprig and a dash of sea salt. You can also settle for crackers and cheese, or you can slice a banana and top it off with cacao nibs.

6. Pretzels

A handful of unsalted pretzels are also a great snack either when eaten plain, with light peanut butter or dipped in dark chocolate.

7. Popcorn

Popcorn is a whole grain which makes it an incredible snack which will not only fill you up, but it will help to reduce your food cravings as well as help you to lose weight. You can eat popcorn in almost any way you can imagine; drizzle it with olive oil and sprinkle on your favorite spices such as chili powder and cinnamon or Parmesan cheese and nutritional yeast. If you have a sweet tooth, you may like it with agave nectar and cinnamon.

The flexitarian diet allows you to snack on just about anything which you have in the fridge or the cupboards as long as you make it a healthy choice. Whatever snack you choose, make sure that it is below 200 calories and that it is low in saturated fats and sugar.
