hey kim i used to use the elliptical but it would kill me. I dont have the greatest knees in the world and like you after 5 minutes I was dying. could it be the speed that you are trying to do? or have you thought of maybe trying the elliptical first and then doing the treadmill? just some suggestions

Hey Kim megan gave you some good ideas I would try those and also you might want to think about your shoes that could be the problem you might need some shoes with more support. Are you doing these at a gym? If you are you might want to talk to others that use that machine or someone who works at the gym to see if there is anything you can do differently. Hope you get it figured out!!

Thanks Britt and Megan - I have new shoes (as of last November) for running, and so it could be my shoes, but I wouldn't know what else to buy. I would hate to spend a lot of money (like I did on my running shoes) only for my feet to ache.

I may try to do the elliptical first. thanks!

Does anyone have any advice about shin splints? I have always had problems with them, even when I was a kid. It is just that lately they have gotten worse and have even started to bother me at night. I run/walk on the treadmill. I am sure it is because I am bowlegged

Lisa, shin splints are a common problem -- I ran a marathon a year and a half ago and had trouble with them when I first started training. I would look at your shoes first of all -- make sure you're getting good absorption of the shock -- you want to have your shoes absorb as much of the impact as you can. You need to look at your feet and your arches -- then determine if they're the right fit for your type of foot (or go get fitted for proper shoes at a running store). You may also be over-training -- try taking a break and allow your muscles to restore themselves. Good luck -- aren't you glad these are the problems you've got as opposed to being inactive? Good job, girlfriend, you're doing awesome!

Now that I think of it the shoes might be a problem, they are about 5 years old. I only use them for working out on my treadmill so they do not get dirty, so I have not felt like I needed to replace them. I think I will try that first, because it certainly can not be from muscle overuse since lately I have only been getting in about 2 workouts a week.

Saturday ~ Took pictures of soccer kids for 3 hours - showed just about ALL of them how to properly "take a knee" by demonstrating it myself one by one.

Sunday ~ Went mall shopping with my Mom walked and shopped for 3 hours

Monday ~ Went mall shopping with my Mom (again) walked and shopped for 4hours

Tuesday ~ 45mins @ Contours

Shopping is definately a sport! You walk, you dance around in the dressing room when something in a smaller size fits you You carry around heavy shopping bags if you buy something. Definately exercise
