My 6 yo had his bday party which turned into people for dinner then to a slumber party the day before. My legs ACHED when I went to bed from being up and on them in flipflops all day . My dh had offered to take all the kids (our 2 plus 2 extra) razor clam digging the morning of the race. High tide= 8:30 AM we live about 2.5 hours from a coastal beach they could dig. The whole lot need to be on the road at four am. I stayed up to get them to sleep (late). I couldn't get back to sleep after they left until I overslept. I realized then I didn't have anything together, my ride arrived as I got out of a MUST wake up shower. I over dressed. I wore the running skirt that I always forgets chaffs until it does. Our rabbit had escaped and made it to the front yard. I had to wrangle him. We parked super far away( i can't remember the reasoning, but there was some) . I never went to registration the day before because it just got cut so I was late and anxious and sweaty from running to get there) . I got signed up and to clothing check, and the bathroom. I relaxed and ate the luna bar I grabbed on the way out and hope that would work out. the race has a draw bridge two mile in that goes up 20 from the start of the last wave. I'm a 12 min mile runner. I was in the second to last wave so I had a little more time than 20 minutes, but i didn't know exactly how much. So I had to run extra hard to start out. I got to the bridge 19 minutes in, great time for me. there was still three miles left. At mile 3 I got a giant charlie horse in my hammie causing me to remember I hadn't had anything to drink since the day before......... I finished in 55 minutes even with the several minutes I took to drink some water and walk out the charlie horse.

What I learned:

1. no slumber parties before the half marathon
2. If you are on your feet from 6am -11 pm that is not a proper rest day
3. Be more organized.
4. get rid of clothes that don't work even if they are cute or you spent more money than you wanted to on them.
5. luna bars are super easy on the tummy.

Giggle away! I think my friend might have peed her pants a little watching me chase that rabbit around half dressed with wet hair at 7 am. I'm getting teased about this for awhile.

I think aside from new shoes I broke every cardinal rule of racing.

Much better today. 5 miles. I did a progression run on the 1/4 mile from easy pace to 5K pace and then did intervals from current 5K pace to former 5K pace. Felt good.
