Grrr. I've disappointed myself again. I *love* to swim, or at least, historically, I have loved to swim. I've been telling myself for years that once I get my cardio capacity up (heavy smoker issues, again), I'm going to start swimming again. Since my muscles are SOOOOOOO sore and tight at the moment (I think there's something wrong with me) I thought I'd swim today instead of my usual 60 mins elliptical. I thought I'd shoot for 60 mins and be happy with 30. I lasted *15 minutes*. I was the youngest person in the pool by at least 30 years, and I was the only one spluttering up and down with rests in between each lap. Argh! I don't even feel as though I deserve lunch after such a poor showing (though I will, of course, eat lunch).

Back on the cardio machines tomorrow...

baffled, don't be hard on yourself -- you'll get there! I'm jealous of anyone who can swim at all, because unfortunately I never learned how!

Today I did a 5-mile run. It was the first time I've run that far without walking at all. Woohoo!

Congrats Lisa Marie!

(You should take swimming lessons. Everyone should know how to swim! Even slowly and sputteringly!)

Baffled, speaking as a former competitive swimmer, SWIMMING IS TOUGH CARDIO! I find it more difficult than even running. What kind of "routine" do you follow when you're swimming? I remember in my swim practices, the coach would have us do sets of decreasing lengths, with 30-45 seconds rest in between. Work your way up to it! We all start somewhere.

Dana: You are right. It is very tough cardio--very hard on the old lungs as well as on the muscles. Even so, it was a bit disconcerting being outswam by a pool full of women in their 60s and 70s!

When I was younger (and before I had decimated by lungs with 2 packs a day) I used to just jump in the pool and swim up and back for a couple of kilometers and then pop off to school. Easy as pie. This approach completely failed me today Swimming might not work for me as a form of exercise until I quit smoking. It's too bad. I *love* the water.

LisaMarie, I too wanted to mention the swimming lesson idea. I'm biased but I think it's just such a wonderful experience and such a good feeling to swim

I definitely plan to take swimming lessons eventually -- when I have time, when I can stand the thought of someone seeing me in a swimsuit, when I have money, etc...haha. Seriously, I will. I'm kind of excited about the prospect actually, so I may start them this summer when I'm off.
