Good Morning Everyone,
I am off to my first day of volunteering with LLS. I will be working with a program to get schools to encourage students to raise money for children with Leukemia. Although about 85% of children with Leukemia can now be cured, not all have access to the resources they need. I spent time this weekend tracking down teachers and school administrators whom I worked with before I retired in 2004. I actually found quite a few - Google is amazing. Will check back this afternoon & let you know how it went. Lynn |
Good Morning, All...
Sounds like everyone has the after-weekend blahs... except for KarenFL, with your perpetual sense of humor! I love your sense of humor!! Glynne and Freda... Hi! KarenMO, your girls are so cute and not spoiled in the LEAST. Every fur baby deserves that kind of treatment, and we should, none of us!, cast any stones! They might damage my cat's stroller! Haha... And I thought Jack LaLanne died years ago, and I was surprised he was only 96! I remember him from when I was a kid, and I feel like I'm 94, so I figured he was at least 112! He did a lot of good in his life! Laffalot and Shrinkmfs, welcome and/or welcome back! PT/Zoe, I understand about the SAD. I was sad many years ago and was sent by my primary care doc to talk to a shrink. After a few sessions of all sobbing and no talking, she said "for god's sake, get a LAMP"... That was before the days of tanning beds... Poor MamaNature is totally hormonal and pissy! Planned to take Aunty Ann over to visit Granny/Mom today, but she's feeling under the weather and passed. That's a bad sign (she's 95). My mom always said Ann would go to a funeral for someplace to go... and so I hope she's okay! I'll take a pizza to Granny/Mom for a treat for her (oh, no, not a treat for ME!). Nothing else is on the agenda. Hope you all have a good Monday! Warm, dry, WARM, and safe! |
Monday, Monday....up at 5:30 in the dark, drove to the office as the sun was coming up, will drive home as the sun is going down, and when I get there, it'll be dark again. Did I mention the temperature? Does anybody remember that movie classic, A Christmas Story - about that kid, Ralphie, who wanted a Red Ryder BeeBee gun for Christmas? Okay, so do you remember his little brother who was so bundled up in his snowsuit that when he fell down outside, he couldn't get up? Well, that's how I feel today, with undershirt (okay - a tank top left over from my summer wardrobe), heavy sweater, and a long sweater vest OVER the heavy sweater. Woolen tweed wide-legged pants with sweater-knit panty hose underneath, and warm suede boots. Oh, and of course an ankle-length woolen coat over all of that, woolen scarf and lined leather gloves. No hat. I never wear hats. Not to work, anyway. I wear them if I'm "playing" outside, but that's only if I can go in and immediately wash and fluff my hair as soon as I take the hat off. Otherwise, my hair is stuck flat to my head, and it's NOT a pretty sight, trust me. Now, in summer, I DO wear lots of big straw hats and such, because my hair seems to do better when it's warm out - and getting windblown even helps it, oddly enough. So all I have to do is take off the hat and stand in a breeze...:dizzy:
We had the family to dinner last night...well, yesterday afternoon, really...my dd & sil with dgd and the twins; ds & his fiancee; other dd & dgs - oh, and sil's brother, who came up from Connecticut to help sil fix something on his snowblower. We had a really nice day - everybody helped clean up, and then there was a rousing game of Clue that I didn't participate in, as I was busy accompanying the game with an original musical composition created by the twinnies playing a variety of musical instruments from our "music corner". They were beating drums, playing the guitar, shaking maracas, and a variety of other shaker thingies that we've picked up along the way here and there. Great fun, and since we were dancing as well as making music, it's conceivable that I could count that as my exercise for the day - I think. So I'm now at work, wishing that I was home making music with my twinnies. Spring is coming. Slowly, yes, but inevitable, right? (Please say this is true). I made a pork roast and baked chicken for dinner, with my homemade apple-cranberry sauce, baked potatoes with sour cream, steamed broccoli, corn bread, and my dd made her world-famous macaroni & cheese (I only had a spoonful, but YUM-O!) and ds brought cheesecake and ice cream and cookies and carrot cake for dessert. (I had ONE bite of cheesecake - what's that, about 7,000 calories?) Really a good dinner, tho, and everyone stayed on for hours...something, I think, about the instinct to gather together for warmth when it's so cold outside. Well, back to work for me. For now. Now I am REALLY and truly counting the days to retirement. Have a good day, all! :grouphug: Z |
Hi-Ho!
Nutin' much going on here, usual Dr. bones app. DH had to shovel and blow more snow so we could get out, blah, blah, blah. Zoe...isn't family nice to have around, your's sound wonderful. The twinies would be fun to have around, watching them grow and learning new things everyday. What words do they have in their vocabulary? You gals talking about cooked cabbage, I love it too but it smells the house up terrible. I made up homemade tomato soup for my lunches using frozen tomatoes and zucchini from my garden, onions and spices. I blend the whole batch up in the food processor. Donna, I'm just started thinking about your cabbage ideas and since cabbage is so low in calories, maybe I should cook some of that in the soup too. I really need to look up some recipes for something different using up all those frozen tomatoes and zucchini. Any suggestions on different ingredients to add to it? Or spices with the cabbage. How about dill weed in the soup with the cabbage? Or caraway seeds. KarenFla...what's wrong with your nose, you lift the cover of your cooked cabbage and love the smell? I hadn't thought of putting sugar in with the cabbage, maybe I'll try that with stevia. KarenMo...I haven't had time to try resizing again, hope your instructions about putting them into a folder helps. (I made a copy of instructions since I can totally zone out on things not written down.) Lynn...congrats on the lost pound, I'm wish they'd get the results posted.:?: Welcome Shrinkmfs and Laffalot, we all enjoy talking to new people and picking your brain. Bunti...yeah, me too. Back then I was skinny as a rail and never exercised with him but he was fun to watch with his enthusiam. Quote:
Glynne...how's your battle going with food choices, menu's and hubby support? What changes have all of you made so far this year? Have you found any new food products that you can't live without? Wanna share? I love the peanut butter dip I make with PB2 powder, you can eat a ton of raw veggies to dip in it and keeps you full for those in-between meal times. I think I'll check out some recipes now, have a skinny Monday. |
Bobbi,
I make a cabbage soup using V-8 juice. I empty a couple of (big) cans of V-8 (the original veggie kind) into a pot, shred a head of cabbage real thin and throw that in, add a couple of onions sliced thin, some sliced carrots (or fresh petite carrots), a couple of cloves of garlic peeled and shredded, and a pound and a half or so either of chicken meat cut up into chunks or ground turkey that I've browned in a frying pan first. For seasoning, I add a couple of packets of taco or chili seasoning (whatever I have on hand), a little chili powder to taste, some black pepper, and a dash of cumin. At the very end, when all the other ingredients (oh, I've made this soup with turkey kielbasa, too) are done through, I add a couple of 15 oz. cans of drained and rinsed black beans. Once they're heated through, my soup is done. We usually have a good meal from it, and then freeze six or so tupperware (or whatever the brand name is at the market) containersful for a later date. I've also done the same recipe, more or less, using a bunch of kale or mustard greens instead of the cabbage. (Smells better, too....) Over and out...back later to chat. Z |
Our last day at this place...we leave tomorrow for Indio. I did my weekly all-over cleaning of the RV...kitchen floor, dusting, vaccuming. Then headed for the laundromat again as I noticed we were low on washcloths...so washed linens, towels etc. While I was gone my dh turned the mattress end over end. It's a pillow top so can't turn it over. First time we'd turned it since we got it...about 2 years ago! LOL but realize we only sleep on it 3 mo of the year so isn't QUITE as bad as it sounds. :o I was going to vacuum the top but by the time I got back from the laundromat my back was hurting so I didn't.
My weight is really creeping up and no wonder the way I've been eating! I have to get back to my eating plan. I can't stand the way I look and am ashamed of my gluttony plus my bs was really high (for me) this am! Tonight we are going to the clubhouse for a spaghetti dinner....yeah, that's gonna help! But at least there is portion control there as you only get one serving. I usually am really good with my meals but I have even been overeating at my meals lately....I guess I'm bored in the RV or something. Well, it's almost time to go to the clubhouse, so I'd better get off this computer. Have a good evening. |
Just a quick check-in on this cold cold evening. I did all of my "good girl" stuff this am...mammogram, dental cleaning (2 cavities!) and then some time at the gym.:carrot:
That cabbage soup with V-8, beans..etc sounds good, Z. I will have to try it. Poor Jack..but he had a long and healthy life. I remember watching him on the tube too. We're having left-overs tonite. And I made sugar-free butterscotch pudding for dessert. Stay warm all. Lyn |
Evening all....That sound you just heard was me doing a happy dance. We came in 2nd and with 27 tables not shabby!
I came to defend my smeller! Yesterday I made country spare ribs and red cabbage. It made the house smell wonderful. Shedded 2 heads of red cabbage, one onion, and put half in big stock pot, layer of boneless ribs and top with the rest of the cabbage/onion. Used about 1 cup of cidar vinegar, 2 cups of water and 1+ cup of splenda. Covered and simmered until the pork is tender. That is such a German home cooked meal. and smells devine! Even better day2. (don't forget pork is the other white meat) Shrinkmfs....welcome:hug: Jack LaLanne...gee thought he and Capt Kangaroo all passed away a 100 years ago! Wonder what ever happened to Mr Green Jeans? I knew i was preggie when I turned on the tv for Capt Kanagroo and threw up on my slippers. That was 50 yrs ago. Saw Jack awhile ago on one of the shopping networks he looked like an old turkey with so many waddles, but still limber and still wearing tights. Ok here is another karen law. No Actor/performer over 60 can take off his clothes on on screen....including shirts. Between Paul Newman and Clint Eastwood am scarred for life. Lyn...so that's what it's called....hmmm have my good girl day next month. I had a nastier phase....:?: Zoe....I promise Spring is coming. The days are actually getting longer now. Going to work in the dark and getting home in the dark is horrible. Bet you are driving into the sun both ways. Store these memories so when you retire they will make retirement even sweeter. I can't remember the last time I set an alarm. Good times are coming. Need to go on ebay and confirmation shipments that arrived. Accidentally bought 2 extra lots of books. 99 cents for 8 books with 2.50 shipping. Thought had just marked watching...see what senility has done to me. duh karen3 |
Hi G.G.s,
I didn’t check in yesterday, looks like I missed a lot. Turns out my Milky cat was not as much better as I thought. Saturday he was back to just lying around. By Sunday afternoon I couldn’t even get him to eat, & he seemed awful weak. I spent most of the day holding him in my lap. I don’t know if that made him feel any better, but it did me. First thing this morning we took him to the vet. She said his temperature was high, probably an infection of some sort, & gave me antibiotics to give him. She said he should show some improvement in 24 to 36 hours. Already he’s acting a little better. Late this afternoon, he got up & walked to his food dish, when I was feeding the other 2 cats. I’ve been having to take his food to him - when I could get him to eat. So, I really think he’s going to be ok. About the sausage seasoning - Zoe, as Bobbi mentioned, it’s seasoning you add to ground meat to make it into sausage (& thanks Bobbi , on the tip on where to get it!). I always add it to my ground turkey (or chicken) if I’m using it to replace ground beef in a recipe. I think it disguises the taste much better than using it plain. Donna, that recipe does sound about right, but I really don’t know what mixture of spices they use in the “store bought”, the ingredient list on the jar just said salt, pepper, spices, & dextrose. Bobbi, about putting sugar in the cabbage - my Great Granny always fixed her cabbage with lots of bacon grease & sugar. I loved it, of course, but that sure did away with the low calorie part! I make mine with a little margarine & a lot of artificial sweetener (aspartame for me), that’s as close as I can get without adding all the fat & calories. Not as good, but not too bad. Freda, we have the same 3 drug stores around here, & I have gotten some good bargains at them. I once found a bunch of close-out hair products, that I had coupons on, at a Rite Aid, & got enough shampoo & conditioner for a year, plus 3 boxes of hair coloring, all for $11.00! Boy! was I happy! Lynn, Yay! on your additional pound lost! Hope you had a good first day, & what a good cause! Gayle, glad you only had to endure half an hour without your electricity & internet. KarenFL, just watched the weather a little while ago, & (fingers crossed) it looks like the snow is going to miss us this time, at least in my area. Did you really mean only 3 SECONDS for the little baby goats to empty a bottle?! When I was bottle-feeding my kittens, it took them each about 10-15 MINUTES to empty a bottle, & that was about every 4 hours! I’m really glad to hear they’re doing good. Bet they’re cute! KarenMO, speaking of cute - Ginger & Sissy in their coats sure are! Bet they like to get out & show everyone how pretty they are. Zoe, that dinner yesterday!!! Sure am glad I’d just finished eating when I read your post! How do you keep from pigging- out around all that delicious food? And, Darn, now I want cheesecake (of course I ALWAYS want cheesecake). I’m guessing that your family dinner, & playing in your "musical band", cured your SAD, at least temporarily. Hope work today, & those frigid temperatures, didn't bring it back. Lyn, Wow, you are a “good girl”. I would have used having a mammogram & a dental cleaning, both in the same day, as an excuse not to exercise, but then I use any & every thing as an excuse not to exercise! Good for you! And I’m sure it feels good to have those two things done! Mary, you’re being waaayy too hard on yourself! I’m sure you’re not doing that bad on your eating, & we all (I'm sure), sometimes (usually?!!) hate the way we look. It’s really hard to stay on plan when you’re traveling, & you’re in pain! Hope you had a good evening, & that the spaghetti didn't do you in too bad! Hi Bunti, glad you’re getting warmer weather! And Hi! to Laffalot & Shrinkmfs & anyone I missed. I’ve GOT to shut up & get out of here! Oh, KarenFL, just saw your post - congratulations! Bye All, NCNancy |
Hello all,
Has been a rainy day here all day. Worked on cleaning my granny cycle and trying to figure out some kind of padding for the hard spot on the front of that seat. Wish it would be nice weather out so I could go for a ride. I remember Jack LaLane too ~ mom used to exercise with him sometimes and and us kids did it with her. (Bunti ~ we had only 3 channels then too ~ 3, 5 and 8) Mary ~ I enjoy following your travels ~ is Indio ~ Indiana? Can't remember where is your home when you are not traveling? Zoe ~ that soup sounds yummy. Sounds like you had a fun time with family this weekend. I just love it when the kids are here and playing games and stuff ~ I'd be in the kitchen and just hearing the sound of talking and laughter ~ it is the best :D Bobbi ~ what is the cost of that PB2 stuff? I went to their web site and found a store near here that sells it ~ was just trying to get an idea ahead of time. They had the nutritional info on their web site and it is only 1 point for 2T ~ where as the reduced fat kind I use now is 5 points for the same amount. Re: My battle with the food choices ~ I feel like I am doing pretty good. The weight is slowly creeping downward. I have been staying on track good now that the holidays are past. DH has been very supportive. Donna ~ hope Aunty Ann is ok Off to bed ~ more tomorrow. Take care |
Hi Everyone - I too remember Jack L. & watching him on TV & trying to exercise with him. Gee, that was eons ago, eh? I go weigh in tomorrow; not too sure how I did. I always feel fatter on weigh in day, ie rings won't move off fingers, waist band on jeans feels tight, etc etc. They all were loose just the other day! lol I'm on the WW program & really like it this time; yes, I've been on it more than once. I don't know how to make the "scale" to show progress like I've seen on other posts. Can anyone tell me how? Have a good night all..........see you tomorrow.

When I was a kid - 60 years ago - my mother and sister had a booklet of exercises by Jack LaLane. I remember doing the exercises with them.

Hi Everyone,
Yesterday was my first day of volunteering - Zoe, stop reading now. You are going to think I am SUCH A WIMP! I left home at 9 am & got home at 4 pm. I was SO EXHAUSTED!!! Two of those hours were commuting. I am NOT used to working! Obviously need to build up my stamina. This morning is a visit to the dentist. I will check back here this afternoon. Lynn |
Good Morning Girls,
It remains colds here and I tend to stay in as much as possible. But I have the grands Monday and Tuesday so they make sure we move a little, in addition to the exercise. Tonight is soccer night, so we'll be out and about. Tomorrow I have to work. Z, and the days I work I go to work in the dark and come home in the dark. HATE it! But, like someone mentioned, the days are beginning to get longer. And I'm taking my Vit. D, which is supposed to help with the winter Blahs. I know it is the new vitamin of choice, hope they don't decide in a year or two that it's not beneficial at all. I do know they are just now starting to do leavels and most people are really short. And, yes, jumping around with the kiddies is exercise. Lynn, everyone is talking about the dentist! I guess that is a sign from God that it's that TIME! yuck! Laffalot, I'm not the one to give computer advice! The worstr! But, I think you have to have more posts before you can get the weight tracker. I'm sure someone else will let you know exactally how many. Gayle, I think you are really going to enjoy that bike. I'm sure you will find some way to make the seat more comfortable. But it looks like you could put a cushion on it and wrap it around under the seat and tape it? My husband thinks duct take fixes any/every thing. LOVE days with no admissions! NCNancy, Poor kitty. Hope he is feeling better today. I hate it when my "baby" is sick. It's hard because we love them so much and they can't tell us what's wrong. Karenmo, The "girls" are not spoiled. Every girl should have a fur! Mary, It's hard to diet away from home. You'll just renew your efforts when you get home. Lyn, Love butter scotch pudding! My favorite. Thank God for sugar free Jello, it's saved me many times. I make the old cabbage soup that was in the cabbage soup diet. remember that? I still make it because I like it. It's the one that the Big Boy restaurant makes too. Donna, all of us that live in cold, sunless winter places probably have a little "sad". I know I feel better on sunny days. Just not too many of those lately. But i'm taking my "D" so I'm counting on that to help. Bunti, I want some weather too! At least the days are getting longer. Bobbi, Feeling better? I just found out that my insurance covers chiropractors! I see one in my future. Everyone, have a blessed day Freda |

Morning, today I get to stay home. I hate that drive into town and Zoe, geeeeezzz the driving you do makes me dizzy.
Glynne...the PB2 is $3.99 in our local store. It's really great stuff, I love it. It makes a great raw veggie dip too. Freda...my insurance pays for most of my chiropractor bills, but not the cold laser treatments. Hi Lynn, surprise, surprise, our blue team actually won this week's round. I've been inspired to get on my dusty stepper and contribute to losing this week. You know how I hate exercising. Laffalot...I don't remember how many post you need, it's not a lot. 17?18? Check in the help section. Nancy...I'm just about out of my lunch soups, today I'll experiment with the cabbage. Your granny's recipe with bacon makes my mouth water, I wonder if turkey bacon would be good in it. I blend the whole works up anyway, I'll let everyone know what I come up with today. I have to do a major replanting job on my Hibiscus plant today. I have two, one is huge and very healthy. The other one has always been sickly and prone to aphids or some kind of plant bugs. I purchased a new bag of soil and today I'm going to take the plant out of the soil, rinse it off and replant it. I purchase some plant medicine to put in the new soil to kill off anything bugs on the leaves. I'll see if I can find a picture of the beautiful flowers I get off it, the healthy one. It sure brightens up the corner of my living room. Later gators............ P.S. Thanks KarenMo...your resizing instructions worked. |
