Photo Post aka What 40 lbs Looks Like

celticharpie on Nov 8th 2013 12:18 pm

It’s good to take photos, especially when you’re overweight because it gives you a real idea of what you look like.  I had to search hard to find photos of me at my heaviest.  Mostly because I shied away from the camera.  Below is a timeline of photos.  While my weight from April to November did not change by a drastic amount, I did do a bunch of exercising and got more toned from last summer through now.  Pretty pleased with the results so far :)

Also, because my face has changed drastically, here is a side by side comparison…

40 by 40

celticharpie on Nov 1st 2013 05:00 pm

So in August of 2012, I had one goal:  to lose 40 lbs by my fortieth birthday (which was in February of 2013).  I started by doing C25K and Herbalife.  Lost about 25 lbs that fall.  I stopped the program around the holidays and never got my mojo back before my fortieth.  However, I lost 25 lbs, so go me!

I spent my birthday in Ireland with my best friend and had a lovely time.  When I got back, I started working out a local fitness place (doing BodyPump) and, while I didn’t really lose any more weight, my body shape changed for the better.

In July, I traveled back to Ireland to see friends.  In the months leading up to my trip, I invested in a new summer wardrobe.  I was now fully back in normal sizes– goodbye Lane Bryant.  When I got back, I was surprised to find that even though I’d been off any sort of real diet plan, I had maintained nearly all (within 5 lbs) of my initial loss.  At the end of August, I decided to try a new plan because I was ready to invest the time and energy into losing more weight.  I signed up at the local Metabolic Research Center at the end of August.  In the past two months, I have lost 21 lbs while doing that plan.  More importantly, I have lost 23.75″ from my measurements.  Weirdest side effect?  I fit into shoes better.  Strange, isn’t it?

I realized when I went into my center yesterday, that I have finally lost my 40th lb.  I’m still 40 (won’t be 41 until February 2014), so it looks like I have finally hit my original goal of 40 by 40.

I’m still doing the plan, but not quite so strictly.  It’s just not possible for me to do it all the time, but I am maintaining my loss thus far.  Still have about 15 pounds to lose before the end of July, but it should be easy to accomplish.

Real excitement came when I went bra shopping and went down a band size from January.  Now my weight hasn’t changed all that much since then, but it’s nice to feel that my body is changing.  Here’s a recent picture:

Week one on the lyn-genet plan

celticharpie on Apr 14th 2013 11:56 am

I just finished my first week of the Lyn-Genet Plan and I’m down 6 lbs from where I started a week ago. It’s a nice, healthy mix of food, and I’m pretty happy with the results.

A note of caution: the book is incredibly obtuse and poorly written/organized. I would seriously like to have a word with the editor. However, the plan is sound. You do have to do a fairly large amount of cooking, so be prepared to shop and cook.  Every. Single. Day.

Can’t complain too much, as I am eating real food and safely in ONEderland and beating my low weight from last fall.  Also? 1 oz of dark chocolate every night and a glass of red wine if I want! Hurrah!

Ireland, life, and a break

celticharpie on Mar 1st 2013 05:58 pm

It’s been a few months since I logged in.  After hitting ONEderland, I ran smack dab into the holidays, and more importantly, the darkness of the morning.  I managed to run a bit over Christmas, because I was in Arizona.  However, back home it has been too dark in the mornings and too cold for me to run.  But I sort of expected this to happen.

My initial goal was to lose 40 lbs by my fortieth birthday.  This didn’t happen, and that’s ok.  I really needed a break after four months of hard work and dieting.  For my birthday, I went to my favorite place in the world:  Ireland.  Spent 10 days there immersed in music.  Had the most amazing musical moments of my life singing and playing harp in a couple of wonderful pubs.  Spent time with friends that I’d known for years.  In truth, there is no place on earth I feel more at home than in Ireland.  After I lose this weight and finish my graduate degree, I will be plotting and planning how to move there.

So I wasn’t down 40 lbs.  Who cares.  I was told I sound Irish when I sing, and that I’ve a gorgeous voice.  I had trad players tell me I’m f’ing brilliant.

Now the good news:  even though I’ve been wildly off my plan and exercise, I only gained about 3 lbs back.  Today is the beginning of another diet challenge with my group.  Today I started at: 202.4.  Not too bad.

Today I also got news that my band has a gig in a pub for St. Pat’s.

It is a good day, friends.

My mom is here for the holiday, and I’ve been off plan quite a bit.  However, today I went running and then stepped on the scale.  I have reached ONEderland!

What 22 lbs feels like

celticharpie on Nov 8th 2012 11:04 am

The office where I work tends to be the place in the building where “stuff” gets delivered or waits to be picked up.  Because the person who schedules the recitals for the School of Music is also in my office, we tend to have lots of technology stuff lying about.

For the past two days there was a grey box and a strange bright orange thing laying on top of said box.  I couldn’t figure out what it was.  Yesterday, the recording engineer came in to collect those two items.

“What is that?”  I inquired of the bright orange thing.

“That’s a weight to keep a mic stand from toppling over.  I guess it’s about 25 lbs or so.”

He’s a coworker that has been very complimentary of my progress, and is also a runner, so he cajoles and asks about my running.  He’s also one of the people that called me skinny the other week.

He continued, “Want to see how heavy it is?” as he handed me the weight.

I took it and couldn’t believe how heavy it was.  Yet that exact amount was what I carried around on my body.

Progress.

I may not be losing as fast (or keeping up with the plan as strictly), but I am managing.  I should hit ONEderland this month.  I’m very excited about that.

just a quick weight loss log

celticharpie on Nov 6th 2012 02:34 pm

Don’t have too much time to write.  I’ve been meandering (not particularly on plan, not running much) over the last two weeks.  I have still managed to lose some weight.  Not too shabby.  Will be kicking it back in high gear once work stress is slightly alleviated.

clothes, clothes, clothes

celticharpie on Oct 25th 2012 11:37 am

I’m heading to Chicago for homecoming weekend.  Can’t wait to see my friends again and have a great time at my alma mater.  Last weekend I went shopping for some new jeans.  I bought jeans a size down and also fit into some pants in the regular sizes.  Also bought a cute knit dress and some leggings.

So far this week, three different people have called me “skinny”.  I know I am far from it, but I feel so much better about how I look.  I fit into some pants I haven’t worn in ages, not since the last time I was under 200.  They are DKNY and I bought them in the “normal sizes.”  That’s such a huge motivational factor.  You go from having a small corner in the back of the store with limited selection, to the entire mall.  It’s dangerous!

Below is a not so great before and after.  I’ll be updating the after with a new photo of me in this outfit after I go out this weekend for Halloween.  I found out yesterday that I needed a costume for some fun parties I’ll be going to in Chicago this weekend.  I have performed at Ren Faires for many years and have a lovely back lacing corset.  Decided to be a pirate, since all I would need is a hat.  The picture on the left is from the Celtic Christmas concert I did with my band last December.  The picture on the right is me in my Halloween costume.  Same corset and shirt.  Same person, minus 21 lbs.  It’s a little hard to see, and I didn’t even have the corset tightened nearly all the way.

Back in the game

celticharpie on Oct 20th 2012 12:05 pm

Well, after a week off running and my diet due to travel for work, and another week suffering from food poisoning, I’m back in the game. Just got in from my W9D1 of C25K.  I ran for 30 minutes without stopping. Was I fast? No. In fact a lady with a jogging stroller passed me at one point.  But that doesn’t matter. I don’t care how I look out there. I’m doing this for myself.

In scale victory news, I’m down 20 lbs as of today!
