I definitely started with Learn & Burn, but if you're familiar with kickboxing, you may want to start out higher. It's very basic. I needed that, but it doesn't sound like you do. I have had no problem with her instructions and cueing on the workouts. I love the Cardio Party 1. I would recommend that one. I don't really like #2, but a lot of people here love it even more than #1. I don't know how it works buying them individually, but on the learn & burn dvd I got with my package, it has the 20 min workout and the Turbo Sculpt on it too. Those are some good workouts too.

Hope my rambling helps. I know you're going to love whatever workout you choose.

Good Luck!

Diane

Diane, as always, you have been so helpful. It's great to hear that you don't have a problem with her cueing, because I was getting pretty concerned with so many of the reviews I read last night commenting negatively on that. I own a lot of workout DVDs and have rented MANY more from Netflix. One major reason for me not buying a workout that I've rented is bad cueing...it's one of my HUGEST pet peeves in exercise DVDs.

Thanks as always for your advice!

I was hoping to avoid buying Learn & Burn but, if the cueing is as bad as I've read on the Cardio Party (which is what I had been planning to buy), I know it will really annoy me.

Do you guys agree that I should start with L&B?

I'm nowhere near being a newbie to aerobics and such. I suggest that you get L&B if you can. The moves are slightly different than regular kickboxing aerobics. Plus, it made learning the actual cardio session so much easier. The DVD that I have has L&B, 20 minutes, and cardio sculpt (or abs--I can't remember). I love the 20 minute workout and wished it were longer. I ususally combine it with the cardio. I also am a visual person. I can't learn well by reading what to do. I can watch and pick things up pretty easy.

As for her cueing, I don't believe it's the best, but I really can't complain. There are some things that she does not cue whatsoever. However, after a few runthroughs, it's not a problem. There is only one thing that I really, really dislike about the videos. Mind you, a lot of at home tapes are like this. When she tells you to go to the right, she's actually going to her left. This drives me bonkers with at home exercise videos. I hear left, but I see she's going to her right and my brain gets a little confused for a second. :)

That is to funny. I loaned my dvd to my sis and she said the same thing. I've NEVER even thought about that. Its strange how people process things differently!

I am a veteran of Walk Away the Pounds and other DVD workouts that have made the switch to telling you to go "left" when it's their "right" to make it easier on the home exerciser. I love that (bless their little hearts! hehe). So yea, it is going to get on my nerves, no doubt, if TJ doesn't do that, but I imagine I will adapt once I learn the choreography and get used to the workouts.

Thanks for your input, Odaley!

See now I find that helpful because they are going in the same direction as you are. They are actually on a different lead, but since they are facing you, you are going the same as them. I just wonder how they keep it straight. That would screw me all up if Chalene was saying 'okay, go right' and they are actually going left. I guess that's what they get paid for.

Ha! :) I understand why instructors do this on their videos. If I hear them say, "to the left," I'll do that. However, when I look at them and see that "to the left" is actually being done on their right . . . I think it just messes with my brain because that's when I start messing up.

However, I become used to it after a few run throughs.

I personally think Chalene does a good job with the cueing. It seems like she calls out every step. Also after going through it a few times you really don't need much cueing because you'll be so used to it. The combinations are really simple to learn.

I prefer to have her mirror me. That way when I hear march left I know to start marching with my left foot without putting too much thought into it.

If I could, I'd like to piggyback on this question. I posed it in another thread but I think it was the wrong thread to post it in:

"Rather than ordering the entire series, I was thinking maybe I would just get 1 or 2 of the really good cardio calorie burners from Turbo Jam that do not include floor exercises. Can anyone recommend which ones would be good for that? (I was thinking I'd just get 1 or 2 off Ebay).

Thank you for your help!!!"

So now I'm thinking I should also start with L&B, then which 1 or 2 would be good to buy? (preferably ones that don't include floor exercises and are good cardio calorie burners).

illinichick 03-27-2006 10:24 PM

I would really skip learn and burn. I only did it once, and I haven't gone back. I would get the 20 minute workout and cardio party (1 or 2, I like them both). I like the lower body jam too, but there are floor exercises. There's a link on the last page of posts that has the link to beachbody.com where you can just order the ones you want.

good luck!

Thank you so much for taking the time to share this information!!

I wouldn't skip the Learn and Burn. I actually still throw it in after the 20 minute sometimes just to make sure my form is right. I always meant to do that with Tae Bo too but never did - which is probably why I ended up injuried from it a few years ago. ;) Chalene recommends that you start with the original pack and go in the order they come out. I still do the 20 minute a lot (I love that workout) and add either Ab Jam or Turbo Sculpt or the new Booty one. I love the Cardio Party 1 and 2 also. Actually I love them all and I can NOT wait for the new workouts to arrive. They are shipped - now they just have to get here!!!!!!

Hey All

I can't even stress enough how much I love TJ. I actually just ordered the new set last week & can't wait to get it. I can't see myself doing any other workout anymore. It's so motivating & fun. I love that some of her TJ team were normal over weight people at one point & now they look amazing & are on the dvd's. I do TJ 4 times a week. I'll do the "Learn & Burn" in the morning & then when I get home from work I'll do the 20min workout. Then the next day I just do the Cardio Party #1 when I get home from work. So I alternate like that every week. I'm so excited for the new set to come in. But it's not too horrible to wait just 'cause I love the set I'm doing now. TJ really has changed my body & I've only been doing it since 1/30. Hopefully by the summer I'll look like a hottie.
