C25K -- How do I know I'm ready to move on?

  • Good job, Willow68! It really does feel good when you finish, doesn't it.

I'm using the Robert Ullrey podcasts and I like his voice, I just don't care for the faux-Euro Techno music. I listened to parts of the DJ Beatsmith podcasts but it doesn't sound much better. I don't want to go to the work of mixing my own and I sure don't want to try to do it with a stopwatch, so I think I'm just going to suck it up and keep going with the Ullrey podcasts. Apparently there are some Christian music podcasts out there; that's not my thing but it's appealing to some runners so that's something to check out.
  • I also just found an app on itunes that lets you use your own music but times everything for you...so that may be the best of both worlds. I haven't tried it yet so I am not exactly sure how it works but I'll let you all know if I can figure it out for my run tomorrow (W1D3)

That would be great. I don't actually have an iPod so I can't use the proprietary format that they use. I have had to convert the Ullrey podcasts to mp3's before I can listen to them. Let me know if that app works for you and I'll see if it'll work on my Sansa mp3 player.

    it feels fantastic! thank you!
  • We just got home from w3d3. Wow! It's hot out there and windy. We did it though. I'm still sweating...

I have a version of Robert Ullrey's (sp) c25k podcast without music. I don't want to be listening to music while DH isn't. He likes to talk while he runs (crazy I know) but I cannot answer. If you like hip hop/pop, I have a c25k (it's mp3s, not a podcast) from KissMyBlackA@@.com. I think you can guess the real name. It's pretty good and I think I got it at itunes. I sometimes listen to it on my stationary bike in the morning for a change of pace.

Friday night is w4d1. 5 minutes--I'm shaking in my shoes... jk
  • Well, I just completed W1D3 and I used the itunes app for C25K and it works really well!

You just create your own playlist and the sounds/voice just speak over it to tell you when to walk and run (it also includes a 5 minute warm up and 5 minute cool down).

    Pretty slick.

The downside, I guess, is that, unlike some of the other podcasts that change beat to the walk and run segments, I have not been that creative with mine but it worked anyway.
  • DH & I just got back from w4d1. I never in my life believed that I could run for 5 minutes straight, but I did...twice! It's not too bad, but it is a challenge.

    Woohoo!!! You go!

That seems an impossibility to me right now but tomorrow is W2D1 so we'll see how that goes.

I have the same problem. I just did a google search for the couch to 5 k podcast in mp3 format and I found quite a few site. One of them I went to worked for my mp3 player. I wish I could give you the link but I do not have enough post yet to add a link. I googled couch to 5 k mp3. It was one of the first couple results that google came up with.

By the way I am planning on starting tomorrow so I hope you dont mind if join you guys.

Good job! I was supposed to do W3D3 tonight but had a family dinner thing to do. By the time I got back, there was still daylight left but I had a full tummy so didn't want to try to run. I'll do it tomorrow evening. I'm glad to hear that the 5 minute running wasn't too bad. I'm a little worried about it!

Of course we don't mind; the more the merrier. Thanks for the tip about googling for the mp3 formats; I didn't think of that. Duh!

I'm sorry but this is hilarious! (the music here is something that drives me insane so I can just imagine what you are talking about) probably not funny to someone who isn't attacked by it on the radio on a daily basis, but OK... thanks for the giggle!

whoah! good job! I am SO nervous about week 4!!! we are supposed to start on Monday!
  • I've finished my C25K journey and I'm so so glad I started it. A few things that helped me were always making sure I got enough sleep and enough water the day before I ran otherwise it was a million times harder to get through. Also this may sound weird but I chew gum while I run to help keep away cotton mouth while I'm huffing and puffing along. I cut down my caffiene on the days I run to, I'm not sure why but it's harder to run with lots of coffee in me. As the running intervals get longer it really helps to learn how to pace yourself. You'll learn the difference between your normal jogging pace and a resting one. At first I had no idea how to do that but then it became necessary to keep going. When I want to keep that annoying voice out of my head I just try and focus on the lyrics to the music I'm listening to and also count my steps on each inhale and each exhale which helps me to not run out of breath so fast. Good luck to you all! It's so totally worth it!
  • Well Just started c25k today. I was not able to complete all 8 of the running sessions. Infact I was only able to complete 3 of them. I had the energy to keep going but my calfs were burning. Still are. I wonder if I was not properly stretched. I did 15 mins of streatching before but maybe not the right ones. Does anyone have a link to good running stretches??? It could also be my weight. I am close to 300 pounds. My doc did me the ok to start this program she just wanted me to listen to my body. I am hoping on monday I might be able to do 5 of the sections and wednesday all 8. Then next week be able to do the full week. Even though I was not able to do even Half I am so proud of myself. I took my first step on my journey of a thousand miles

hey, no need to stretch before. you could actually yourself then. because your muscles are cold. stretch afterwards. maybe check runnersworld.com for stretch suggestions.

do you wear the right shoes? that could also be a problem? did you go to get fitted for them?

and don't worry about not getting through all the intervals. i wasn't able to push through the first time. i walked 2 of them at a high speed. and then worked myself up to running all of them. i got stuck at week 1 for longer than a week but it is so OK to do the program at your own pace.

    and keep going, girl!
