The You on a Diet book recommends eating 20 almonds or 12 walnut halves 30 minutes before your meals and you'll eat less. I have tried that and it works. It also helps if you make something that is more on the so-so side instead of spectacularly tasty

Thanks to you all for your suggestions! I only found out about the laughing cow spreadable cheese when DD was here earlier in the month. Yummy. She also got Bunny Grahams in the high-priced "health food" section of the grocery store. They are miniscule cookies, but you CAN have 24 of them in a serving. MINISCULE. But you have to go slow and count them!!

What a lot of info you found.

In spite of greater hopes of weight loss by today, I not only did the late night eating thing Monday, but I DID IT AGAIN LAST NIGHT.
What do you gals think about the reality/possibility of self-sabotage? I mean, I was SO happy with my stars and stickers last week, but this week:
I could perfectly well have gone to bed, but I stayed up, ostensibly to have more lemonade because I was thirsty...
but then:
Eng. muffin and cheese (which would have still been under my daily 1500 cal.
next: entire container of potato salad (3 official servings worth) @ 630 cal
next: 18 (!) choc mint cups (3 were a serving @ 190) @ 1140 cal.

Leaving my day's total at 3269.
WTF? (Excuse my "French" I've been IMing with DS.)

And of course, I didn't want to have breakfast because I was mad/undeserving/embarrassed, etc. etc.

I also thought I was the "worst person in the world" because surely nobody else who's been trying to lose weight has EVER done such stupid things.

If you have feedback, (isn't it funny that there's "feeding" in feedback?) I'd be glad to hear it.

Other than the residual negativity from yesterday today was a good day. I got to the gym, realized that I AM feeling less tired, though still sore sometimes... and most of my knee pain is gone as long as I keep taking the anti-inflammatory med.

I don't know how much this afternoon's thunderstorms dropped her but I bet it was several inches. MONSOONS in Texas. Lots of lightning which meant flashing signals (which meant traffic was at a crawl on the way home). But I was very glad I was NOT part of the 8 car pile up on a surface street. (Just goes to show you how rainy it was... hardly ever see that many accordioned cars except on a major highway. I bet it sounded like a machine gun when they crashed: bang bang bang bang bang bang bang

Sounds healthy to me! And I understood that Spelt was a type of flour or meal which was used to bind all the ingredients together. Might be wrong.

Believe it or not, I'm still waiting for the man. Oh I did ring him and got an apology because he thought it was this afternoon not this morning (until he opened his calendar!!!) so I have said I will do this thing between 2.30 and 4.30 when the bus goes. He has 6 minutes to make it here on time. CLOCKWATCHING !!!!

Well Done Carla. That is awesome.

Okay, I'll go stand in wait for my little man and see if he comes to the aid of the party this time. He has 2 minutes and counting.

I THOUGHT I'D SHARE AN E-MAIL FROM WORK!
HAPPY THURSDAY!

'True' Friendship-
None of that Sissy Crap-

Are you tired of those sissy 'friendship' poems that always sound good, But never actually come close to reality?

Well, here is a series of promises that actually speak of true friendship.

You will see no cutesy little smiley faces on this card-

Just the stone cold truth of our great friendship.

1. When you are sad -- I will help you get drunk and plot revenge against the sorry ******* who made you sad.

2. When you are blue -- I will try to dislodge whatever is choking you.

3. When you smile -- I will know you are plotting something that I must be involved in.

4. When you are scared -- I will rag on you about it every chance I get.

5. When you are worried -- I will tell you horrible stories about how much Worse it could be until you quit whining.

6. When you are confused -- I will use little words.

7. When you are sick -- Stay the h*ll away from me until you are well again. I don't want whatever you have.

8. When you fall -- I will point and laugh at your clumsy azz.

9. This is my oath.... I pledge it to the end.

'Why?' you may ask; 'because you are my friend'.

AND ALWAYS REMEMBER:

Friendship is like peeing your pants.
Everyone can see it but only you can feel it's warmth!

Mel--- that friendship/peeing remark made me SNORT!!
I had a good day today. Skipped Curves. (Decided alternate days is probably enough for now.). Actually wasn't very hungry, but had yogurt (Dannon's fit and lean which is about the only one that doesn't have tons o' sugar) and apple and vegetable chicken with cashews. And felt good about having angel food cake with raspberry puree. Haven't checked calorieking yet.

Knit all afternoon at my local yarn shop. It was like a half day vacation.

Awww man, I tried to do a quote and lost what I had been composing for the last 20 minutes

This will be the shortened version as I am really tired right now.

Hello Painter. I see you're on right now. Good for you for making good choices today. Go to Curves every day. It's only 30 minutes. Then you can have a bigger slice of cake Yes, I think you and I could have a long conversation about self sabotage. I am still trying to understand the why's of it all.

Have fun camping Holly. Wish I was going too. I miss not camping.

Thanks for the blurb Mel - I especially loved number 3 Here's one for you...

Why did they kick the elephants off the beach?

Because they were walking around with their trunks down.

Carla - that's incredible. So happy about the weight loss so far. Keep up the great work!

Meadow - another adorable graphic from you. Thanks for the kind words about my mum. Would you like me to ship you the contents of my refrigerator which contained lots of little baggies of things she didn't finish but couldn't quite toss out - stuff like 2 bites of a hamburger and 4 french fries, a half of sandwich on really soggy bread, and my favorite so far - 1 chopped up chicken tender and a spoonful of cole slaw. On the serious side, she had a cancerous growth removed from the side of her face and is doing fine. it was just a tiny mole that the arm of her glasses kept rubbing against. Didn't bother her at all but when the doctor did a biopsy it needed to come out. So I ask you all to be mindful of those things.

Geez Shad - going into the mine to train people? How does that work? Do they have computers in the mine? Eek - just the thought of going in there gives me the heebie jeebies.

Ruth - hope the knee is feeling better. Why do you have to wait so long for the replacement? Good for you for keeping active!

I agree with you about the antibiotics in the meat Shad. Organics are getting more popular here and I believe they have a line of better meat that is growth hormone and antibiotic free. Gosh they won't give you antibiotics for a cold and here maybe all we had to do was go eat a steak or two

I've been getting home late and eating on the run. Nibbled on a few jelly beans at work too and was quickly reminded of just how bad sugar is for you - and I only had about 12 tiny beans. Work is a little stressful right now and I'm looking for a diversion. I'll be nibbling on almonds and cherries tomorrow instead.

That's unfortunate that Bob Greene has cashed into the Oprah money train. I liked him from long ago - always thought that he was very practical in his diet programs and he was one of the first to recognize emotional eaters. Sorry to hear that he's charging up the wazootie for everything now.

Ceejay - did you get flooded out? Alot of the rain has been going south of us or north up by you. Good luck with the best life plan. To me it's just another flavor of the Super Foods diet.

Ok, I really have to go to bed now, I'm doing more yawning than typing. Sweet dreams everyone.

Just thought I would pop in Personal mantras? I've heard one is needed in order to progress in this life with serenity and solid, focussed direction :P So my personal mantra is " I don't require anyone's permission to react, do, be anyway other than whichever way I chose, in any given moment of the day In other words, pfft and double pfft on anyone, anywhere who wants to judge me. I'm doing okay. Did I mention it is hot here? breaking records. I'm going to stretch now and breathe.

Happy-tidbits from the fridge you can bin. I'm sure your mother fully intended to nibble on them but you kept her too occupied with your lovely presence that she forgot. Swim on brave dolphin sister

Hmmm.... when last heard from Shad was waiting for a little man before going down into a mine. Should we be sending a search party???
As for the flourless bread, Shad, I pondered that one for a while too, and finally decided they must mean that there is no ground grain, just sprouted bits that have been ground or pulverized or whatever, so not technically flour. Maybe Meadow can clarify that one for us?

Happy, I'm glad your mom had her skin cancer removed - they're pretty harmless if caught in time, and it really is important to check on moles and whatnot. My neighbour had an itchy spot in the corner of her eye, turned out to be skin cancer on the tear duct; it was removed and she's fine. If she hadn't been insistent, her GP wouldn't have ever sent her to the eye specialist, and who knows what would have happened. She keeps telling me to wear sunglasses when I'm in the sun, and not to forget the sunscreen. A good message for all of us.
As for Ruth's surgery, the sad truth about our health system is the lengthy wait times. There are just too many people waiting for hip and knee replacements or even cataract surgery, and the ressources aren't there. The situation is better for critical emergency situations - usually - but very annoying for anything considered elective or non-life-threatening.

Meadow, I love your graphics and steal them often.
I checked out the link for the bread, and would be delighted to try some, but they don't mention where to buy it. Is it just a BC thing? I know I can get sprouted breads at the health food store and the hippy section of the supermarket, but they tend to be a little high in calories for my diet right now. I'm slightly ashamed to say I've resorted to buying one of those light breads. It's not as silly as Hollywood bread, which is so thin you can't make a sandwich with it, just thinner than the regular and not such large slices. It's surprisingly good and comes in whole wheat or multigrain, lots of fiber, 90 cal for 2 slices.

Painter, I know exactly what you mean with the self-sabotage. Right now my weight-loss effort is going well, but it sure isn't always that way. It's amazing how we're able to "forget" that we shouldn't have the insert food porn of your choice here but there are ways to outwit the hungry devil within. Some of the things I've been doing this round:
- I eat the same breakfast every day, and never skip it;
- If I'm going to work I make my lunch the night before and take it with me;
- I write everything down, not the calories but a simple food exchange system, with specific amounts of each food group allowed;
- I eat very simple dinners, grilled meat or fish and mountains of lightly steamed 'free' vegetables;
- I've completely dropped certain things - alcohol and sweets - for the duration. Much easier than controlling quantities...
- If I absolutely must have a treat, I try to stick to fairly harmless stuff, like a nonfat cappucino (sorry Mel!) or a whole bunch of fresh berries or watermelon. I also often steam extra veg like green beans or zucchini, which taste almost caramelized when cooled down and make a yummy sweet night time treat...

I also realized that when I do well like you did with your quick 8 pounds off, several things happen: I get cocky and think dieting's easy; I have a tendency to want to reward myself; I get discouraged because I should be looking thinner and don't; I get very discouraged when there's no loss the next week, decide there's no point, and start shovelling the food in... But I've also discovered that if I listen really, really hard, there is always a little voice telling me what road I should be taking - it's just hard to hear it over all the mental whining and justification and self-pity going on.
Oh - one final thing: we really have to forgive ourselves for the days where we just go nuts and eat everything in sight, and go right back to clean eating. Otherwise we fall further into that self-sabotage trap.

Sorry, everyone, for that long post. If you tell me to go take a hike I promise not to preach again. And I think I'll email myself what I just wrote for the next time I trip myself.
Now I must get ready for my massage (yay!!), and still haven't responded to everyone, but for now I'll just say hi to Mel, Holly, Ruth, Madcat, Ceejay, Suzi, and whoever I've forgotten this time.

Morning all
And a very cold morning it is too in Brisbane. Yep, I am home for the weekend and then going to Perth on Monday night to start work on the Tuesday.
Had a long flight home yesterday, made even longer at the end by the fact that my mobile phone would not register a location and remained on emergency for well over an hour after I got off the flight. I knew DB2 was picking me up but couldn't get hold of him. The phone would not scroll through numbers and would not call. When I finally found a phone box, I couldn't get through to the DB2 - his phone appeared to be in use. I couldn't get hold of DS2 because he was at work with his phone switched off. Eventually I had the brainwave of getting hold of the niece who is ALWAYS at the end of her phone and she relayed messages that meant that DB2 and I managed to meet up - 1 hour after my plane had landed. He was not happy and neither was I. I'll have to make time for the phone company today or tomorrow.

Happy - there are surface or open cast mines which means one does not have to go down the pit and such is the case on Groote. However when I said I was going into the mine I meant one of the mine areas such as the workshop or the concentrator or the primary crusher. There aren't too many computers on the actual face of the mine itself. However my man did show up 30 mins late. He has a large problem in his area in that one of the cocrete and steel columns which holds up the beams to the workshop decided that now was a good time to start to collapse. This meant two of the beams shifted which put pressure on all the other columns which are at present trying to imitate the leaning tower of Pisa. A fairly major situation. No computer time today. They are not sure whether it was caused by the blasting which was carried out on Monday night or by water erosion. At the moment it is leaning (pun not intended) toward water seepage and years of neglect.

Carla - good advice there to Painter and stuff which we should all take on board. Might be a good idea to print and attach to fridge.

Painter - one of the things I have learned about dieting and weight loss is that it is long term, discouraging, painful, invasive and bloody hard. We have to learn that when we digress we must forgive, forget and move on. If I have a bad day, and there have been many of them, I just get up the next morning and start as if it had never happened. Alzheimers of the stomach!!!
Just keep on keeping on. Keep up that exercise. It's very hard to begin, but if you stop, just watch that weight pour back on!!!!!! Be kind to yourself, forgive the transgressions and keep going. One step, one day, one mouthful at a time and keep up the journalling. It does help.

Okay, with that, I had better go do something. I have an appointment at the gym at 9.30 and 10.30. 1.30 Hairdressing appointment. I have to get a little bit of food in, I have to talk to the Dentist, I need to go to the phone shop and there is footy on tonight and the DB2 is coming around for that. I also need to talk to a couple of friends, write some emails and do some housework. The DS2 is not good at that!!!!! Monday is the accountant, I also must talk to the DS1 and the DB1 and see how they are going. And I need to pack enough stuff to see me through at least 6 weeks in Perth. It will be that long before I can get back here again.

See ya

HOLLY~ ENJOY THE WEEKEND CAMP FEST!! HOPE THE INLAWS ARE BETTER THAN MY OWN DD'S!
MAYBE ALL US CHICKS COULD GO WITH YOU!

PAINTER~ I SELF SABOUTAGE ALL THE TIME. SO I DON'T HAVE THE MAGIC ANSWER. AT ONE TIME I DID EVERYTHING CARLA IS DOING AND DROPPED 30 LBS IN ABOUT 10 MONTHS. MAYBE IT'S TIME TO GO BACK TO SQUARE ONE AND "KEEP IT SIMPLE". I THINK I AM TALKING MORE TO MYSELF RIGHT NOW THAN YOU!
GOOD LUCK AND BE STRONG!!! GET A FRIDGE FOR GARAGE OR BASEMENT AND KEEP ANDY GOODIES THE DH WANTS IN THERE. PADLOCK IT IF NECESSARY AND GIVE HIM THE KEY!!!

HAPPY~THE MOM STORY CRACKED ME UP!! MY MIL USED TO DO SIMILAR STUFF AND OF COURSE BRING HOME ALL THE NAPKINS, KETSUP ETC THAT SHE COULD GET HER HANDS ON BEFORE ANYONE IN MICKEY D'S CAUGHT HER!! GOD BLESS THEM!! WE NEED TO SET SOME TIME FOR A CALL LADY.

SHAD~ TOO BAD ABOUT WAITING FOR THE LITTLE MAN. HOPE YOU MEANT HIS HEIGHT!! I AM BEING SILLY THIS WEEK. OVERTIRED AND NO COFFEE.
ENJOY YOUR TIME HOME BEFORE YOU ARE ON THE RUN ONCE AGAIN!! TOO BAD ABOUT THE PHONE PROBLEMS ON ARRIVAL

CARLA~ I BOUGHT ENOUGH SIMPLE INGREDIENTS TO FOLLOW MY OLD PLAN AGAIN. FUNNY YOU SHOULD POST THAT COMMENT TO PAINTER. IT MUST BE FATE!! I AM VERY HAPPY FOR YOUR SCALE VICTORIES AND YOU DESERVE A PAT ON THE BACK
AND WHAT DO YOU ME CAPPUCCINO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

MEADOW! THE BEACH CAT IS SO ADORABLE!! I LIKED YOUR MANTRA. MAYBE I SHOULD LISTEN TO IT NOT ONLY FOR MYSELF BUT MY THOUGHTS FOR OTHERS. BEEN A BIT JUDGEMENTAL LATELY AGAIN. THANKS FOR THE "NOD".
I JUST GET TIRED OF WHINERS AND LOSE MY PATIENCE. I LOOKED FOR THE BREADS BUT THIS STORE HAD NEIGHER. I DON'T THINK THEY WOULD RECOGNIZE A SPROUT IF IT SMACKED THEM IN THE FACE I WILL KEEP SEARCHING! HAPPY

BEEN A BIT TOUGH THESE 2 DAYS BUT I MADE IT. JUST VERY BUSY PHONES. I HAVE FINNALLY ACCEPTED THE FACT THAT I REALLY CANNOT DO COMPUTER ENTRY FOR THE OFFICE ANY LONGER. THE EYESIGHT WITH THE CATARACTS AND THE FLOURESCENT LIGHTING IS JUST A REALLY BAD COMBO. TO SAY NOTHING OF THE DRY EYE AND ROSACEA. SO THAT'S A GOOD LESSON LEARNED THIS MONTH. THE STRESS DOWN THERE IS INSUMOUNTANLE(SP). I WILL SAY THAT FOR MYSELF...I WAS VERY GOOD. NO TEMPER TANTRUMS, NO NOSE BLEEDS AND NO ANXIETY.....WELL NO MORE THAN I USUALLY HAVE ON MY OWN. SO IT SEEMS THAT I HAVE LEARNED SOME THINGS ALREADY THIS YEAR AND AM STICKING TO IT. THE ONLY PROBLEM WAS FOOD. I ATE CHINES AND BLEW UP LIKE A BALLOON....AND I ONLY ATE A BIT MORE THAN 1/3 OF THE PORTION THEY SENT!!! SOMEONE BROUGHT THE REST UP HERE AND STUCK IT IN MY FRIDGE. WHEN I FOUND IT I THEN STUCK IT IN A BAG AND TOSSED IT DOWN THE TRASH CHUTE!!!
THE ACCOUNTANT IS STILL HERE TILL 7 AND THEN RETURNS FOR THE WEEKEND IT HAS SOMETHING TO DO WITH NEW GOVT. COMPUTER PROGRAMS THAT WE NEVER INSTALLED OR FOLLOWED! SO HE IS HARD AT IT TO GET IT DONE BEFORE THE MONTHS END. POOR SOD. HE AlSO TOOK CARE OF ALL THE PAPER WORK FOR MY RENT LEVELING FOR THE NEXT 3 YEARS. NOW ALL WE HAVE TO DO IS GET THE EFFING THING SIGNED! WTF! THEN I SIGN IT AND WE GO THRU THIS AGAIN IN 2010. I TOLD THE HIGH BOSS, WHEN HE BROUGHT IT UP TODAY, THAT I COULD BE DEAD BY THEM SO I'M NOT GOING TO LOOK THAT FAR FORWARD
SOMETIMES I WISH WE ALL HAD A SECRET MEETING PLACE. THEN I COULD SHARE ALL THE BS THAT'S GOING ON AND JUST HOW STUPID IT ALL IS. ONE HONCHO WAS HERE AND THREW OPEN THE BACK DOOR TO ASK ME IF EVERYTHING WAS ALL RIGHT. ONE OF THE GENTS ANSWERED AND HE VERBALLY SLAPPED HIM DOWN AND SAID I AM TALKING TO MELODY...AND REPEATED THE QUESTION. WE WERE ALL DUMBFOUNDED BY THE FORCE OF HIS WORDS. LATER THE BOSS SAID IT WAS BECAUSE HE COULD HEAR 2 MAINT MEN RAISING THEIR VOICE TO ME EVEN THRU THE CLOSED STEEL DOORS.
I SAID THAT'S PART OF THE NORM NOW. WE ALL YELL AT EACH OTHER OUT OF FRUSTRATION. NOT SURE IF HE WILL EVER "FIX" IT. BUT IT FELT GOOD TO SAY OUT LOUD!! LOL I AM LOOKING FORWARD TO THIS WEEKEND TO DO A BIT OF COOKING AND I AM GOING BACK TO THE MICHAEL THURMOND PLAN AND SEE IF ANYTHING CAN MOVE THIS SCALE. PRAY FOR ME
LIKE CARLA I TOO AM SORRY FOR THE LONG POST. JUST NEED TO GET SOME CRAP OFF MY CHEST.
HAVE A WONDERFUL WEEKEND EVERYONE.
WISH WE COULD ALL GO CAMPING!

Quite frankly, I don't see anything wrong with saving small portions of leftovers. Waste not, want not, as they say. And why else would they sell baggies and plastic containers in so many different sizes, including snack size... Anyway, stop snooping in my fridge already!!!

Mel, it sounds like you're ready to get going with your old eating plan, and I have a feeling it'll work pretty well. (I know for myself that one of the most annoying things about eating good healthy food all the time is that it actually does make me feel better both physically and emotionally, thus adding insult to injury, if that makes any sense at all.) And by the way, Mel, more often than not use I decaf espresso and skim milk in my cappucino. (Excuse me for a moment while I go adjust my halo.)

Shad, glad there was no need to send a search party down any mine shafts, and that you're back home safe for a day or two. I'd forget about the housework if I were you - it'll just get all mucky again by the time you're home from Perth anyway.

Went down to the farmers' market today and bought all kind of goodies: local strawbs and wax beans and yellow zucchinis and tomatoes and lettuce. The growing season may be short here, but we do have lovely produce while it lasts. The massage beforehand was okay, but not great, I won't go to that therapist again.

Holly is off camping, I hope the weather is good for her. It sounds like a really nice family weekend.

Time for a few strawbs for dessert. Yummm. Happy weekend all!

Happy-- your mom sounds a lot like mine on the tidbits of food in the fridge. I suppose that is why I don't like leftovers. If you look closely most diet are the same, just spiced differently.

PW. You are not the only one who binges.((hugs)) One night I counted 5000 calories. I hadn't thought about stars or stickers!

Hello to Mel, Holly, Meadow,Carla

Yesterday started early with an appointment at 8 a.m. to get the car service and a 50,000 mile check up. They replaced the emissions ejector and they changed the oil. After this I went to super walmart and bought a few things I can't get here. I came back home with out stopping at McDonald's or Burger King. I have been getting Sonic ice cream cones in the afernoon. None this afternoon though. It cools me off from the inside. I had mowed the yard. Also played with the neighbors children. They are so much fun. Their ages are 4 and 2. I got so tickled at the 2 year old. The 4 year old girl wanted me to walk to the end of the street with her and he wanted to go. Their mother watched us. She's 7 months pregnant. We had turned around to walk back and he saw his mother at the end of their drive way. I think the image frightend him. He reached up his little arms and was shaking. I told him that was his mother as we got a little closer he calmed down.

It is unbelivable how much better I'm doing without the chocolate and beef in my diet. I'm also taking the fluid pills. This morning I weighed 184. Most of this is fluid weight loss.

I had to call the land lord this afternoon. The air conditioner started leaking.
It had dirt in the line. I'm not sure how that happens. I keep the ac filter changed. I learned how to handle that problem and will try it next time.

I've taken down the bed frame in hopes that I could have the new bed frame delivered. But it will be delivered in the morning. I'm also getting some much needed book shelves for the bedroom. I need to find a new place to put the metal shelves. I don't want to part with them. They were a high school graduation gift from my parents in 1968. omg, They are 39 years old. My how time flies! Just one more tidbit that I'm getting older.
