Sorry I haven't been around today . . . we've had a change in the weather and I've had a little migraine coupled with being overtired and having an upset tummy, too. Hopefully things will be better tomorrow.

I can say spring has finally arrived. Not only can I wear shoes outside on the street but overnight the kids have appeared on bicycles. And today was so nice I passed a group of (crazy) teenagers in shorts and t-shirts. Too cold for that but tell that to a youngster. The snow that I thought would never melt until June is disappearing in front of my eyes and water is running everywhere. We're promised rain tomorrow and possibly freezing rain tonight but it is warming up.

Hi all

Hello everyone,
I'm a new member and Meowee kindly invited me to this group. I'm a Canadian woman, approaching my mid-50s and hoping to lose some 50+ pounds -- hmmm, that works out to about one pound per year of my age!

It's nice to be here and I hope to meet you all in time! :)

meowee 04-11-2008 08:47 AM

Good Morning . . . :grouphug:

The weather is still dull (supposed to stay that way until Tuesday); but I feel a lot better. :yay:

:welcome: to the group CATHOUSELADY . . . glad to have you joining us. Love your attitude, girl -- hmmmmmm -- I've already lost almost my age and still need to lose almost my age again.

Well, better get moving and shaking -- need to hit a couple of grocery stores today; but other than that nothing very exciting for me. Hope everybody else has a fun day planned. See you later . . .

Daffy29 04-11-2008 08:47 AM

:welcome: Cathouse lady  ...okay if I just call you 'Cat'? I laughed at the 'one pound per year' What part of Ontario are you in?

SeaWave, Mayson: we're all in Ottawa...when we finally get some reliable spring weather, we could maybe meet up for a walk every now and then?

Meowee, SeaWave, I hope the migraines have dissipated. I'm curious if the causes are known, because I had an awful headache through Wed and Thursday myself and just assumed it was allergy-related.

Retiredone: We haven't seen kids on bikes yet, but I saw my first youngster in shorts at the dog park on a sunny day we had last week...don't they feel the cold?

BP, I hope the allergies are better, and that no elliptical-related injuries were sustained...wouldn't want there to be any interruption in your counter-feline preparations ;) The city must be buzzing with news of the Habs resounding victory last night!

Julia, what won out? Housework or play?

Tomato, I'm curious...what's the Gazelle you referred to? In my area, we can get organized exercise classes run by the city for a set period of time, including Pilates. It's not a full-fledged gym committment with all that entails, but it might be a way for you to get started, if something similar is available in your neck of the woods.

An observation: this 'club' seems to be heavily Ontario-populated, and I wonder why. So what's your theory, folks? Serious or silly, let's hear them all!

Have a great day :D

Hi DAFFY . . .

Migraines are really not headaches -- they are just a pain in the head -- technically (at least in my case) called temporal lobe activity. Too many electrical synapses trying to fire at once. My main trigger is a change in barometric pressure -- usually when it is dropping, but sometimes when it is rising. Others may be triggered more by food or drink (chocolate and red-wine are famous triggers). Migraines are often accompanied by extreme sensitivity to light and noise and by upset stomach. I often get an aura (flashing lights just outside my peripheral vision) as a migraine is starting, but not always. For most people, no amount of normal 'headache medicine' will touch a migraine, although some do get relief from special meds (not me - just time fixes it). Anyway, if you suspect migraine, you really need to be tested, so mention things to your doctor.

PS -- The forum is heavily weighted to those in Ontario because that's where the largest concentration of Canada's population is. I think it's as simple as that. BTW, speaking of similar subjects -- Atlanticca has more heavy people per capita than any other area and Quebec has the highest percentage of smokers.

Daffy - I'm going to risk heresy here and say that I hope the Habs lose and soon! I've been a fan since I was 6 years old (I was a Ken Dryden/ Guy Lafleur fan - but I guess we all were back then ), and I must admit I still kinda sorta hope they win again, but the reaction of this city is a wee bit nuts! The last time the Habs won, in '93, there was a riot downtown that scared the crap out of me (I live downtown) - the bicycle shop and jewelry store below us were looted (as were close to a hundred other businesses downtown) and people tried to break into our place while we were there. We no longer live on a main street so we wouldn't likely be so close to the scary stuff again, but I wouldn't wish that on anyone.

I understand migraines - not fun! I get ocular migraines and they either will or will not (random) progress into the full blown ones with vomiting and all that fun. Even if mine remain limited to the visual funkiness, I also get this stop you dead in your tracks fatigue and need to go to sleep RIGHT NOW. When I feel one coming on and I'm out I have to head home right away because I *will* fall asleep. PITA!! My worst trigger is bright sunlight - I have to wear sunglasses at all times when I'm out. Fortunately they're becoming less common as I get older. I also get bad allergy headaches, but they're treatable with a bunch of aspirin and some antihistamines (usually). DH gets really bad headaches he calls migraines, but they're not - not that a bad headache doesn't hurt as much or worse, but they don't come with the 'extras' that a migraine does.

Every Canadian forum I've been on has been Ontario heavy. Even with its comparable population, Quebec is always under represented because many francophones are too underconfident about their English skills to participate in a written environment (I understand - I'll avoid writing in French if I can because while I can speak and understand French, I can't write it well). I've met a few Maritimers online, but not too many, and most of them are transplanted ones, like me

Today's tasks are to return the movie we rented (Sweeny Todd - excellent!!), get my rear back on the elliptical (I managed to not fall off yesterday!), and to veg out and play computer games. I guess I ought to do some more laundry too... and I also need to clean the front entry rugs... and I need to start putting the winter stuff away... oh well - so much for vegging! The weather is crappy today and I don't feel like doing anything outside.

 You're gonna live a long, long life. You'll have to invite us to your 110th birthday party when you get to finally wear that new outfit in your new size!

So does that mean more well rounded chicks live in Ontario? :D I'm not in Ontario. I'm way out here on the East Coast where everyone is so svelt and slim. :snooty: I've recommended this site to several people but I haven't recognized anyone from my neck of the woods.

Hey Canucks!

EZ money has started the 'First annual 3FC 5K run/walk'. There's a link at the top of the page, just under the banner ad. I don't know how many Crazies have already signed up ('cause there's more than 19 pages of posts!) but I thought I would mention it here and issue a 'challenge' to my fellow Canadians to join.

I'll be walking mine on my treadmill on Saturday morning, with maybe a bit of jogging thrown in from time to time. The enrollment is closing in on 200, so get in while the gettin's good!

:woops:

JuliaDH 04-11-2008 03:27 PM

I signed up we plotted our 5k route last night. The whole family is doing it with me Sat afternoon.

retiredone 04-11-2008 09:41 PM

I'm jogging but I'm not up to 5k yet and I don't want to push it just to say I did it, especially since I've been nursing a muscle spasm in my right leg all week. I've jogged 5k four or five times every week a few years ago and I've only started jogging again. Hopefully there'll be a 2nd annual 5k next year. I'll certainly join in that one.

Chris 04-11-2008 09:57 PM

I just signed up for the 5k challenge. Will be walking 5k on Sunday morning.

Inline skated 3 times this week -- 15km each time. My legs are a bit sore. But I just love to skate so I kept going out to the path. Hopefully the soreness will go away soon.

Nasty weather for the weekend, rain, rain & more rain. But next week looks promising so I may get out skating 2 or 3 times during the week in addition to my 2 nights kickboxing. Can't hardly wait for the weather to be consistently nice.

Plan on doing a bit of clothes shopping tomorrow. Although I've only lost 8 or 9 lbs my pants are pretty loose and they look too big on me. I'm definitely down a pant size. I would like to pick up 1 or 2 pairs of inexpensive pants to wear. Hopefully there are some good sales around. I think I may try Reitman's first because they seem to have lots of sales. After that, maybe Sears or The Bay.

Anyway, have a good weekend everyone. Will check back soon.

Chris

Good Morning . . . :grouphug:

Looks like a dull and overcast morning followed by a rainy afternoon. Guess I'd better get myself out and aboutthis morning -- somehow I don't feel like walking even 1K in the rain.

Have a great Saturday, gang -- see you later . . . :carrot:

SeaWave 04-12-2008 01:32 PM

Hi everyone

meowee - I'm glad you're feeling better. I know how horrible migraines are, and wouldn't wish them on my worst enemy. Daffy - my migraines started when I was 17, until I was about 24, but only a couple a year with a clear aura, so easy to manage; started again after I had my son but with no aura -would wind up at the ER 4-5 times a month. When to the chiro for something else, and haven't had a major migraine since. My son is another issue. We suspect part of it is he's grinding his teeth at night, but another part might be like mine (barometric changes). Diet doesn't seem to affect either one of us. By the way, I recommend that anyone who suspects migraines start a detailed journal asap (time you get up, go to bed, exercise, what you eat). Doctors/neurologists use that to try to identify triggers, so time-saver if you already have one in hand when you finally get in to see them!

Bopeep - Once upon a time, my husband complained about a headache. When I asked him if he's taken anything he said it wasn't bad enough. I admit, my reaction may not have been wholeheartedly sympathetic. :tantrum: You just don't talk like that to a migraineur who's been to the ER twice in 3 weeks!

Daffy - great minds think alike! I too noticed that there are a few of us from Ottawa, and thought it would be nice to get together. There are so many great places around that are easily accessed. I'll to send you something off-line.

It's raining this week-end (and possibly a bit of that 's' word), so we're aiming to tie up a lot of loose ends at home and do some errands. The 'to do' list is forever longer than what I can accomplish, but between FlyLady and David Allen's GTD, I'm starting to manage better.

My success story of the week (and someone posted something similar on 3FC this week, but I don't recall if it was this thread - can't find it!): I went to the washroom and pulled down my jeans *without noticing I hadn't unbuttoned/unzipped them!* :carrot: People may have wondered why I was so gleeful when I came out of the washroom

Hope everyone has a great week-end!

 WOW ~ lots more newbies coming in at this time; how nice for us Canadians. We are in Ontario too, but in Northern Ontario: way up just below James Bay, near the city of TIMMINS. We had sunshine all day, but with fierce winds that left giant icicles hanging from the roof that look pretty menacing. It's supposed to be sunny tomorrow, so maybe they will all fall off, as our deck is already a sheet of ice tonight.

We have a house guest right now; a teenage puppy was delivered late one night by a visitor at 11 pm. He's an animal rescuer, and a neighbour who felt bad about us losing both our girls, sent him on an ANGEL MISSION ~ to find a needy small dog/puppy for us to look after.

Well, he came on trial and he sure is a going concern, but we are trying to give him a good home. He sure can use a break; he is blind in one eye, but that isn't slowing him down. Anyways, he is keeping us very busy, as you have to watch him constantly; but he has a very lovable personality ... and the training has begun ~ LOL!

Thanks to you all for your kind words and condolences about losing both our girls; they had good long lives but we miss them terribly. Now, we have this little fella, who needs lots of love and attention too! Have a good night and weekend ... :hug:ROSEBUD:hug:
