Hi gals! I haven't posted in a while, I have been lurking though. This caught my eye and I had to throw in my $.02

I haven't read too many of the responses but I can give you my experience. I was having a horrible time about 2 years ago now. We thought it was milk intolerance because it always seemed to happen right after I had eaten at my parents' house and I would drink milk there more than anywhere else. I would be in great pain and get really sick to my stomach (to the point of randomly getting sick out in public, no fun!).
The last time it happened I was in so much pain and puking for several hours and the clinic at school was closed for MLK day so I ended up in the emergency room. The found a gallstone and said that basically it was moving and blocking the duct which was making me get sick because I'd be fine right after it moved back out of the way.
I was told the only way to remedy this was to have my gallbladder removed. Katie is correct, they do it laproscopically now (as long as there is nothing that could cause a major problem in doing it that way). I have a 1 inch scar right below my ribcage in the middle, a 1 inch scar at the bottom of my belly button and 2 little .5 inch scars on the side of my stomach. I was back in class in 2 days and driving within a week. When my mom had hers out years ago it was like 6 weeks recovery.
The recovery process is interesting, you may not be able to tolerate certain foods as well as you did before. It is pretty bad for about a year but it does get better. The reason for this is your gallbladder regulates the bile to your stomach and it is no longer there so the stomach has to learn to digest certain foods differently. The triggers for me were lettuce, spicy foods, and fatty foods. Some people have different ones, it just varies person to person, you may have no trouble at all.
I really hope this helps and hope you get to feeling better because I remember the pain and would not want to go back there!
