Hi LaDean. I've been craving bananas and toast lately. And now today I'm out of bananas so hoping DS will go to the store for me when he goes to the dump. We have been having a lot of ice and snow so I don't like to drive unless it is really good weather. Last night it sleeted and I'm not sure it isn't slippery even this morning. How's the exercise going, LaDean?

Hi LaDean. Ten inches of snow!!!!!! Don't you live near Portland? That's pretty unusual. We've got lots of snow this year but that's normal for WI. Supposed to rain today and then change to snow and drastically falling temps tomorrow. I'm not supposed to be in the sun so we have an eliptical that is really great. Guess I"m getting used to indoor exercise. I do garden in the summer but try to go out just before sunset.

I got a new DVD by Kathy Smith for $5. It's really old but never used. It looks kind of hard, though. Eating has been so, so. I'm not as hungry any more since increasing my fiber and that's a good thing. I still snack too much and have to watch that. For some reason this morning I'm not hungry and that is very unusual. I'm usually starving in the morning. It has been a few weeks since the increase in prednisone so maybe I'm getting used to the new level.

Maggie Miller has an IE website and here is one of her recent bolgs.

Kugel, Latkes, Brisket and Pie -- Oh My!
If you read my book you know that my mother-in-law knows how to cook. Her meals are truly exquisite down to the china they're served on. And last night was no exception. We had an early Hannukah dinner which meant we had a feast of delicious food spread before us on beautiful platters and serving pieces that my mother-in-law has collected from around the world. On the menu last night was brisket stewed in an apple cider, wild mushroom kugel, potato latkes, spinach and pomegranate salad, asparagus, challah and an English apple-blackberry pie. Everything of course, was handmade. And everything of course (since it was cooked my my mother-in-law), was delicious.

When it came time to fill our plates with food and dig in, I knew to take a smaller than usual portion of everything because there were so many different foods to taste. There was also a hot apple-blackberry pie and freshly whipped cream waiting for us after dinner, and I wasn't about to miss out on that due to getting full too quickly.

When I took only one potatoe latke, my mother-in-law said, "Oh, come on, you can have more than that -- we have so much food!" I cringed at the thought of appearing ungrateful for such a beautiful meal by only taking one latke, but the truth was that EVERYTHING looked so magnificent that I wanted to have all of it.....which meant one latke would be enough if I was also going to have a piece of challah, some of the kugel, brisket, salad, asparagus and .... the apple-blackberry pie with whipped cream. "I need to save room for everything," I said. "I can only eat so much."

After lighting the Hannukah candles and saying a prayer (we did it early this year because some of the family would be out of town on Hannukah), we lifted our forks and knives to begin experiencing the wonderful journey of flavors set before us. Needless to say, absolutely everything was, as my grandmother would say, "Divine!" "Maaaarvelous!" I told my mother-in-law that of all the delicious meals she's made this one ranked as one of my favorites. My husband's cousin agreed.

When we got in the car, Jeremy said to me, "I don't feel stuffed at all." "Neither do I," I said, "Tell me more." So he continued, "Normally I would go back for seconds and I almost went back for another few latkes because they were so good, but I decided to wait and save room for dessert. And by the time we were done with dinner and dessert I realized that my fullness caught up with me, so now I'm full but not stuffed. I'm so glad I didn't go back for seconds because I am completely satisfied right now. That really was a good meal!"

Today as I was walking from the kitchen to my office with leftovers from last night's dinner, two colleagues stopped and stared in awe at my food. "This is one of the many gifts my mother-in-law has," I said proudly. "She is an amazing cook."

And the best part about eating when you're hungry and stopping when you're full is.....you get to have the meal all over again the next day when you're hungry at lunch time -- and you don't even have to cook!

Default I think I am home...

Hello everyone,

A little bit about myself. I live in Va. I work for County government managing and/or implementing recreation programs for individuals with disabilities. Taking my 2nd grad school class through distance education towards a Master's degree. I'm 35 years old. Me and my BF have been together about 2 years this time around. We were together about 8 years the first time.

I have been dieting for about 20 years. I always lose weight. I've lost 40 here, 60 there, 130 lbs...but it always comes back. I've done Susanne Somers, calorie counting, Atkins, fat grams, WW at least a million times. Well they don't work for me or last because I am a binge eater/compulsive eater. So I decided this year I needed to do something different. First admit that I am a binge eater. Second work on those issues and third work on building a healthier realtionship with food. I watched by BF drop 50 lbs in a short time just by being conscious of what he puts in his mouth. He does watch sodium because of his BP and he prefers clean non processed foods. He didn't measure anything and did not eat at prescribed times of the day. I'm using him as a role model.

I started the year with what I call the "Shay Plan"-- 3 meals, 3 snacks a day, still planning and measuring but not counting fat grams, calories, points or anything. After researching I realized it was a form of Intuitive Eating. I do want to eventually get away from measuring and eating every 2 hours but I have been dieting for 20 years so I am a work in progress.

I am working on a binge free challenge. I have made it through 5 days. I am really happy about that. I plan to purchase Geneen Roth's learning packages to assist with IE and working on my binge eating. If I think about it too hard it sounds like it doesn't make sense that these two things would go hand in hand but if I delve below the surface I know they do.

I am still working on feeling the difference between physical hunger and emotional hunger but I know this is the key for building a healthy relationship with food and myself.

Hi CherryAutumn!

Carol--Thank you so much for all of the articles and websites. I find them extremely helpful. I really liked the Healthy Eating vs Restrictive Eating List. I've written it down because I want to keep it as a reminder. I've glanced through all the posts in this thread but now plan to post often and read the posts and provide support as needed.

Carol--Everyone does their own thing. Its more about supporting and challenging each other to do different than we have always done. I'm trying to incorporate more fruits and veggies, drink 72 oz of water a day, and make more of my meals rather than relying on frozen diet meals. When making these meals I'm trying to use healthy products. For example tonight I made pizza with whole wheat crust, light tomato sauce, mushrooms, spinach, 2% mozzarella, and turkey pepperoni.

I already have identified something I need to work on...I have identified several times today where I have been satisfied to stop eating. But what I did was stop, let me stomach settle, then finished the rest of the food. What I should have done was just stopped. I did talk myself out of a 3rd piece of pizza because I was satisfied. A work in progress...

Well...I messed up after being beinge free for 5 days I didn't make it through day 6. I will not beat myself up but will continue with the intuitive eating plan. I have quit TBL challenge. I felt it was too much pressure. They weren't putting any pressure on me but I was doing it to myself. I'm trying not to be as tied to the scale as I've always been and needing to post my weight every week wasn't feeling good right about now. While I am learning about myself in relation to intuitive eating I think there will be some ups and downs on the scale and I only want to be accountable to me.

Hi Shay. I know what you mean about being accountable. I'm in a weight loss challenge on another site and I would really like to bow out because I know the pressure can be really demeaning. But I really like the editor of the site so I'll stay with it for her.

Should have mentioned that I agree there are lots of ups and downs. In 2 yr. I've lost about 20lb and I know that is so little compared to most here. I get really discourage at times but I know I've been on many diets and couldn't stick with it. Awhile back I posted that to really lose weight and keep it off your meal plan has to be similar to how you normally eat but with smaller portions.

Carol--That's why I like intuitive eating. Nothing is off limits. You can't live the rest of your life cutting out entire food groups and having off limit foods. It makes it so constricting when out socializing, at a party, etc. So I buy the stuff I like and eat it. Granted I'm not comfortable including foods that I know I will binge on in my fridge and in my cupboards just yet but it will come in time.

Off and on this thread has been busy but now it has slowed. I keep coming back because I know I can't live with anything else. There is a lot of different sites on the web concerning IE. Some of them, however, are almost like dieting. My first introduction to IE came from Jean Antonello's book, Naturally Thin by Eating More. She advocated eating when hungry but severly limited what she called pleasure foods. The I read Gwen's Shamblin's book The Weight Down Diet and Rob Steven's The Overfed Head. I would really like to read a couple of ebooks offered but I like regular books over ebooks as I don't like to sit at the computer too long. Most of these people have websites. So there is a lot to read about. The last site I posted about here I haven't looked into much but it looks like it will be interesting.
