1000 miles in 2009 #3!!!!!

In 2008, several of us ran in a 500 miles by Christmas challenge. Some of us got there (and then some---looking at you: Jo, Kitty, & Jenguin!) and some of us reached a different goal (300, thank you very much!).

Now we are starting a new year and have a new goal!

The journey of a thousand miles starts with a single step....Are you IN???

This thread is open to everyone--if you are thinking of running 1000 miles by 12/31/2009...or 600....or walking 300...the idea is to move and track your mileage and have some fun along the way!

Good luck to us all!!!!

We have over 1000 posts in this challenge with threads 1 and 2! Woohoo!

MaryEllen 05-19-2009 10:26 PM

kittycat40 05-20-2009 10:36 AM

+5 today.... it was a hard run. I think that's because my six yesterday were rockin' :)

dixied 05-20-2009 11:20 AM

I did 5 miles of HITT on the bike, then attempted a run at the track. After Mile 1 of the run I got a cramp in my right calf and finished Mile 2 at a walk. I had planned on 4 miles of running, but I decided to be smart and listen to my body. That's 259/1000. I just did the math, I need a little more than 24 miles a week now to finish.

Mrs Snark 05-20-2009 12:05 PM

+5.51 miles waaaay too close to the middle of the day, I feel as if I've been steamed.

ennay 05-20-2009 08:03 PM

Hey guys, I havent posted here in a long time. I was rocking along in January and then had the WEIRDEST injury that it took forever to figure out. I cant remember if I posted that ...it felt like a hamstring tear but it turned out that my fibula was not moving in the tibufibular joint so basically I lost all the shock absorbtion in one leg. By the time we figured it out, one portion of my hamstring had basically atrophied

Anyway through sheer bullheadedness I discovered that once we got it moving again the leg really really likes to work hard. Sitting for too long makes the leg hurt like a mofo. Running 16 miles makes it happy.

I'm back on track.

Unfortunately along the way I gained MORE weight. UGH.

MTA: I fixed the pace bunny. And apparently along the way I deleted my mileage tracker...I am at 682.2 miles as of today

7.02 miles today.

Welcome back ennay, I'm glad you figured out what was wrong. So are you running Boston next year then?

Mrs Snark 05-21-2009 07:52 AM

Wow, ennay, that is a bizarre injury! I'm glad you have been able to recuperate from it! You are going to 1000 miles crazy fast!

midwife 05-21-2009 08:48 AM

3 miles today!

Glad you're back to running, ennay!

Dixie, when you break down the numbers like that, it seems totally doable! Woohoo!!

Jo, keep cool out there!

kittycat40 05-21-2009 10:59 AM

Ennay, I missed seeing you! Glad you are are the wellness path :)

Fixed. ;)

Jackie - yes I am running Boston next year if I have to hobble across the line. Seriously not going to miss it again. My 2 best buds will hopefully both qualify next weekend so we will have a partay. Unless their husbands do something silly like try to come along:dizzy:

I am doing a running plan called "streaking" which does NOT involve naked running. It involves running every day even if only a mile. Today will be day 30 once I get my hungover butt to the gym.

MBN 05-21-2009 11:13 AM

ennay -- I'll be interested to see how "streaking" works out for you. :o

Seriously though, I've always thought that running EVERY day isn't a good idea because of an increased risk of overuse injury. I know I couldn't do it. I do some kind of vigorous exercise every day, but I only run 4 days a week, at most, to give my legs a break. I'm sure I'm older, so that's a factor, maybe for you it will be fine? Everyone is different ....

The key to streaking is that some days are short and MOST days are easy and some days are VERY easy. Overuse injuries are far more often caused by too fast than too much. At some point and pace a very slow short run is not really more stressful to the body than a brisk walk and it lubricates and increases blood flow to the areas used by running.

The truth is elite athletes quite often run 13 workouts a week. The reason they can is even though they CAN run a 4 minute mile, quite often they run closer to 7 minute miles and sometimes 8-10 minute miles. Most recreational runners are not willing to have that big a difference between their "comfy pace" and their "recovery pace"

The older I get the more I like long slow distance and find my body doesnt like too much speed.

MTA: 3.5 today

JackieRn 05-21-2009 08:09 PM

Much needed rest day for me.

ennay: I'm so inspired, I hope your friends make it Boston and you have a wonderful race. As far as the streaking I've heard of a few online site where streakers keep track of their days and some people have gone years and years without missing a day of running. Also from my understanding it's not so dangerous as it counts if you do even just 1 mile.

SM177: Your half is this Sunday, how are you feeling From what I've heard its a pretty fun race with decent crowd support. I hope you have a great race day, hopefully next year I'll do this or one of the other races in the area.

sm177 05-21-2009 11:57 PM

Ennay congrats and happy to see you back!! I hope to run Boston in 2011, most likely with my dad.

Jackie - Thanks! I'm excited. I'll let you know what I think of the race overall.

3.7 for me and I'm doneeeee until Sunday. I'm not enjoying this whole tapering business, especially since my leg is feeling better. I'm waking up early tomorrow to check out some entry level road bikes. I have no idea really what to look for:?:. Then my dad and I are headed to Ottawa to spend time with the fam before race day.

Mrs Snark 05-22-2009 09:08 AM

+ 5.19 this morning for me...

ennay 05-22-2009 01:31 PM

8+ for me this morning. Slow. Too much treadmill time this week, I get bored and go faster than I should. Just to GET. IT. DONE.

Why do you tease me like that? ;) Good to see you back! How are the kids?

No miles since Monday but this morning Angie and I got 4 in on the old Starbucks and bunny-poo park walk with the mutts.

Have a great week-end everyone :)

240/1000 MILES

ennay 05-23-2009 12:01 PM

Hey Gary! Kids are good, Samantha is done with school for the summer:fr:

I was thinking of you the other day, how is your daughter and "evil" son-in-law? :D

13.4 today. Beautiful weather.

Dianeofnka 05-23-2009 06:37 PM

+29 for this week.

Ennay, that is an amazing total to shoot for. OMG. You're right that rec runners (like myself) don't like to have a gigantic difference between "comfy pace" and a "relaxed pace." Most of my medium-distance runs I can now do at 9 min/mile, which is quite an improvement for me. Therefore, when I see I'm doing a 12 min/mile pace on my long runs, I feel as though I'm doing it wrong somehow. But I'd rather be able to run it at a slow pace than kill myself trying to do 9 for that distance.

+2.5 yesterday, elliptical HIIT.

Heather5 05-25-2009 11:14 AM

Sunday +5.21 miles

Monday +4.69 miles

The weather has been great! I love walking along the lake and through the park!

midwife 05-25-2009 03:46 PM

I suck. I haven't gone running since Thursday. Must get shoes on and butt out the door.

JackieRn 05-25-2009 08:29 PM

4.62 miles for me today.

ennay 05-25-2009 09:47 PM

10K + 3.8 warmup/cooldown

I can not believe how slow I have gotten this past few months. 8 lbs * 2-3 seconds per pound = 16-24 seconds per mile....uh hmmmm maybe THAT's it.

sm177 05-25-2009 10:03 PM

I'm back from Ottawa! The first half of the course was very hilly, even started uphill. I pretty much felt like soon as a downhill ended we'd turn a corner and ran up another hill. They were longer gradual hills. They pooped me out and I essentially wanted to die from km 14 onwards! It was also very packed and I should have started in an earlier corral because I was constantly weeving through people, I think some people also started in the wrong corral. The water stops also slowed me down, in addition to the heat, I have actually never run in weather that hot. There was a sponge station and I have never felt so refreshed!

I finished in 2:04, grabbed a ton of food even though I felt like barfing and stood in the middle of the crowd with my tin blanket on hoping someone would be looking for me. Sure enough my dad found me, along with my mom, 2 brothers and 2 sisters. My dad finished in 3:07 (he did the full). About 10 minutes after I was done the "gee that was fun!" excitement set in. And now I'm pumped to recover and get onto marathon training! It's all so exciting because I feel like I have a ton to improve on, like working with an empty canvas!

Shannon in ATL 05-25-2009 10:42 PM

+2.5 today, treadmill HIIT

MaryEllen 05-25-2009 11:37 PM

Went canoeing for 12 miles today. My whole body is sore so I feel like that counts.

MBN 05-26-2009 05:56 AM

SM177 - Congratulations!! Awesome time!!!

DH and I went kayaking in the keys over the weekend, so I missed a couple of running days - although got a 10 mile run in yesterday morning. That puts me at 492 year to date. Although, we kayaked 20 miles over 2 days! It was just awesome. I've racked up almost 75 miles of paddling so far this year, but I'm tracking that separately .....

Mrs Snark 05-26-2009 08:27 AM

+2 miles. I have a nagging hip problem threatening to turn into a major problem so I'm babying it a bit by doing more biking than running. I may take the rest of this week off running altogether and see if that does the trick...
