Cool

Hi, all. Sunny day here. I'm a little stressed about work. It's a question of whether my small firm (and my job) will survive. If it does, it will grow into something very different, which is scary. So I'm still having trouble getting on the wagon. Sigh.
Meowee - thanks for the hugs. I need them right now. Mouse's surprise - Ick! I was once wakened in the middle of the night by my cat who decided to birth her kittens under my covers. that was fun!
Rosey - I've never seen daschund puppies. Aw. it must have been hard to keep from laughing as you let dh handle the dog disruption. Those 10 lbs will come off in no time when you go back to your program.
Michelle - welcome. I live is San Francisco, only because I'm under rent control. It's very expensive to live here but I've lived here all my life except for a year in Iowa in the late '60s. Your dietition will probably tweak your diet a little but I'm sure you can stay on weight watchers. If you lose and maintain your weight and keep up the exercise you should avoid meds for a long time.

Rosetta - Sorry to hear of all your work stress. Hang in there. And what a way to wake up -- to a cat birthing her kittens in bed with you! BTW, thanks for telling me where you live. SF is expensive (as is the entire Bay Area), which is why we moved. We knew we'd never be able to afford a house there. A dear friend of mine lived near Ocean Beach. SF is such a beautiful city!

Rosey - You can definitely fix your temporary gain. Once you get back on track, the weight will come off.

Ladies, I've had the major munchies today for no real reason. I had a good lunch (1/2 ham sandwich and a big salad), and then I just wanted more!! So I ate the string cheese I brought, plus the yogurt. Still wanted more. So I went downstairs and got some LF popcorn and a V-8. I can work the extra snacks into my points (using up a couple flex points)...but I shouldn't eat so many carbs at one sitting without some more protein....not good for my blood sugar, right? I usually try and balance my carbs and proteins at each meal/snack. Hopefully the yogurt and string cheese will balance out the popcorn and V-8. After these are gone...no more food until dinner (which will be around 7:00 or 7:30 when I get home from the gym). I'll do more cardio - close to 60 minutes, along with weights. Gosh I don't like doing weights on my own...much prefer to do them in a class (but the classes at my gym are on break for a week). I know...like the 100 Days of weight loss book that I'm reading says....it doesn't matter if you don't like it or don't want to do it...DO IT ANYWAY.

Thanks for letting me vent.

It's snowing a little...nothing sticking to the ground yet. Yay! And despite the continued wintry weather, I'm in a great mood. I had a wonderful workout last night 45 minutes of cardio and 30 minutes of resistance exercises including abs. Then I came home to vegetarian veggie soup and a Smart Ones dinner, with grapes and choc milk for an evening snack.

It still amazes me that I feel so wonderful the day AFTER exercise and even sometimes 2 days after exercise! I don't know if it's endorphins or my body's way of thanking me for doing something good for it. Whatever it is, I'll take it!

MICHELLE . . . sounds like you are having a great day, after a great evening to finish off yesterday.

I'm having a very strange morning -- brought on by my own stupidity, of course; but at least I've found a good use for Diabetes. It can definitely get you out of a dentist appointment.

This was my morning for a root canal appointment. My BGL was pretty high when I got up -- 7.5 / 135 -- probably a little stress in there. Anyway, I delayed and then totally forgot to eat breakfast and started having a low when I hit the dentist's building. Even though I took some glucose immediately, I guess my staggering into his office, freaked him out and he decided it might be best to reschedule. Hey, who needs a nervous dentist working in your mouth with very sharp instruments. Only bad thing -- now I hve more time to fret about the root canal procedure which is now scheduled for April 11.

So . . . now LouLou and I will go out for our normal Thursday mall-crawl. It's a lovely sunny day again -- but it is cold, still.

Have a great moving and shaking day everybody . . .

Its damp here in MIchigan. Alittle rain mixing later with snow. Went to the dr this morning. BS was 201 and weight was 275. So he increased my insulan to 30 units twice a day and a recheck in 10 days. Some of that is due to Easter, but most of it isn't. Just my snacking thru out the day.

Meowee - That sure is an interesting way to get out of a root canal! Hope you're doing better now! How long does it usually take to feel better after you go low like that?

Creations - Bummer that you have to increase your insulin. I typically eat 3 small meals a day plus 3 snacks (1 between breakfast and lunch, one between lunch and dinner and one after dinner snack). I try to make them fairly healthy snacks, combining proteins and carbs, and I allows plan for them in my WW points.

I've got a question for you ladies.... are grapes "bad" (e.g., too high in sugar)?

Last night, after working out hard and then coming home eating dinner, relaxing for a couple hours and then taking my BS, my BS was 89, which is much lower than my 2 hours after dinner BS has been (typically ranges btw 95 and 122). Also, this a.m. my BS was 98 and it's been typically ranging btw 100 and 115.

Could these lower readings be because of the exercise last night? I'm making a spreadsheet to track my BS readings, and I'm wondering if I should add columns like mood, hunger level and if I worked out and for how long. What do you think? Do all those things make blood sugar fluctuate and are the fluctuations typically small (5 pts or less) or can there be large fluctuations -- what is considered a large fluctuation?

I'm open to any and all suggestions and advice. I have so much to learn.

Thanks,

Hi Judy . . . aww that is a shame about the increased insulin, Chickie . . . just keep doing the best you can.

Hi Michelle . . . wow lots of questions . . . such an eager beaver . . . you are a delight.

Okay -- depending on what you do to treat the hypo, it usually doesn't last too long. What meds did you say you were taking? Because if you are taking glyburide (or similar) or Actose or Avandia; those can cause hypos. You should always carry glucose tablets with you. Those tabs work the fastest and then you should follow up with a normal meal asap. Problem is not to overdo it. When you feel that crummy (sweaty and shaking and dizzy), it's very easy to find yourself face-down in a bucket of icecream.

Grapes are a perfectly good fruit -- in moderation. As I mentioned, everybody is a little different. They do tend to spike me a bit -- I do much better with apples, plums, berries.

Yes . . . everything you mention can make BGL fluctuate and as long as the fluctuation is only 5 or 10 points that is absolutely nothing to be concerned about. In actual fact, you do not want to get too low just before bedtime, because then you get could get into my pattern which is not a great one -- I go very low in the middle of the night and my liver kicks out stored sugar (that's a good thing, it keeps you alive) . . . but the darn old liver usually overdoes it and that's why my mornings tend to run higher than I'd like.

As you begin your fun career as a diabetic, keep as much information as you can to discuss with the doctor and the dietician and nurse specialist you may be seeing. After you discover just how your body reacts to various stimulii, you'll find you can relax a little.

Okay, gang . . . now that I've dished out a bunch of advice on what to do -- here's another perfect example of what not to do. Do Not skip breakfast -- as well as putting you in dange of a hypo, it tends to make you overly hungry and you will likely overdo it at the next meal. I certainly did. LouLou and I went to Swiss Chalet for lunch and as well as a half of a BBQ chicken, a roll with butter and salad; I also had dessert. I haven't checked my BGL since then -- but believe me, it is not LOW right now. Thankfully tomorrow is another day.

Okay everybody . . . have a great evening . . .

Meowee - Thanks for all the GREAT info! I hope you don't mind all the questions. This stuff is so new to me and the diabetes websites (DLife and diabetes.org) give good general info, but sometimes I have more specific questions. BTW, I do hate that crummy feeling of sweating, shaky and dizziness. I try to eat every couple hours to avoid that. Hopefully my dietician won't think that's too often.

I didn't know that about the liver kicking out stored sugar, and I was wondering how on earth my morning BS could be higher than my bedtime BS - since I've gone without food all night. Thanks for explaining that. Now it makes sense.

As for what meds I'm taking...right now, I'm not taking any. I'm just doing diet and exercise. I get another fasting blood test for BS, A1C, etc. on 4/12 and I see the doc on 4/18. I'm hoping that he'll still think I can control this with diet and exercise. Good idea about keeping a list of questions for my doc, dietician and diabetes educator.

I've learned a lot in the last month since my diagnosis, but I know there's much more to learn in this journey. I appreciate all your support and advice!

Good Morning Sweeties . . .

Well, at least it is morning . . . . . . No sun smiling down on northern Nova Scotia today and there is a little bit of white fluff falling from the sky . . . soon this will all be behind us, I hope. My BGL was a nasty 7.7 (almost 139) this morning. I didn't check it last night so I don't know where it was at bedtime. Hopefully this over 7 (126) routine will also soon be behind me, too.

Sometimes my e:mail in-box yields some very timely articles . . . here's one that was almost tailormade for you, MICHELLE . . . http://www.everydayhealth.com/public...betes_20080328

Anyway, guess I'd better get myself moving and shaking. All I've done so far today is sponge away a lot of cat hair from the furniture. You know, I think I could wipe at it all day and still keep finding more. Really surprises me that the cats are not bald yet.

See you later gang . . . hope everybody has a great day . . .

Good Morning all, My name is gillie and I have just found this wonderful site. My heart skipped a beat when I found the Diabetes thread. There are others out there, struggling with the same problems that I am. What a thrill. I think that made my sugar rise. I need to settle down. I am a widow and a grandmother, I am retired and weight is my touchy subject. I am glad to be here. I am going to go and search the site.

MEOWEE - Wow! That article really WAS tailor-made for me. I saved it to my computer. I think I will talk to my doc, dietician and Diabetes Educator about what I can do to protect against low BS and yet still exercise my butt off so I can lose the weight. Plus, I'm at the point now where it feels so great to exercise that I really miss it on the days I don't work out and even on the days I work out but at a lower intensity. Maybe I'm addicted to the endorphins! I NEVER thought I'd say that!

Gillie! I just joined this thread a few days ago (although I've gotten great support from 3FC for years). The ladies here are WONDERFUL, very welcoming, and extremely supportive. I was just diagnosed a month or so ago, so I'm still learning a lot, and it's wonderful to have the kind and knowledgeable support of MEOWEE and the others here.

Cool

Hi, all. Sunny but cool here. I ran out of my Actos prescription and haven't taken it for a few days. My bgl is actually a few points lower than when it was taking it so I'll wait a few more days and see what happens. One less drug would be fine with me.
Meowee - someone should tell mother nature to turn off the snow machine. Enough is enough. I rarely eat breakfast, only have tea with a little sugar and milk. Don't feel hungry until about 2 p.m. My liver produces a lot of sugar overnight so I have a high a.m. reading.
Michelle - I too wish I were addicted to exercise. I've been a real slug lately.
Gillie - Welcome! We look forward to your posts.
Happy weekend!
