Mossy, most of your answer lies here in JB's post.

That was not when she stalled, that was when she put her weight loss program into high gear. At this point she "over"exerted a set of muscles which had not been used near as much. That made them sore to a point, they surrounded themselves with a blanket of liquid and the cells sent the chemical message that they needed more strength so the hard exercised muscles grew more muscle cells. Muscle cells are much more compact than fat thus shrinkage plus they weigh more than fat cells. Result= trading fat for muscle plus shrinking and adding weight at the same time. A very good trade off actually. Muscle needs more energy therefor the liver begins using the fat to convert back to glucose therefore even more accelerated fat burning.

I had to take a 2 week break, due to pleurisy, and that is actually when I saw my Christmas low of 230 .4 Now, I am still doing C25K and I have finally had a whoosh (230.2 yesterday and 228.6 today) so maybe my body is finally adjusting to this added exercise?

Yes. The body is constantly adjusting to changes which affect it. Over-eating, under eating, lack of exercise, over exercise, leveling off during periods in between. The body is like a manufacturing plant which uses and discards different things taken into it, constantly adjusting to what it is exposed to, what it needs, what it dose not need. And all that goes on without any conscience control from us. The body sends different chemical messages to other body parts telling them what it senses is needed. The overexerted cells send a message they need more energy and need more help... glucose is sent to them and cells divide to make more cells. Not that simple but is in the complicated process of what happens in the body. When she began the running the body needed more energy than it was taking in, so there began an insufficiency in insulin resulting in the blood carrying fat from the fat cells back to the liver where it is converted through a few steps back into glucose, then distributed back to the muscle cells.

Maybe it was just taking a break from weight loss? Maybe I've been stalling on the scale but I've been loosing inches (that's what hubby says.....says I look smaller than I did at Thanksgiving)?
So, while I don't know what the answer is for you, running was not the IMMEDIATE answer for me. Of course if you can do more than a few minutes of a jog, at a time, without getting winded then things could be vastly different!
Whatever your answer is, I hope you find it quickly!!

JB, it sounds like you found the answer to kicking your weight loss into overdrive :)

And Mossy, seems you are doing the same. I totally agree with Mrs Snark about that between running and swimming, swimming is the way better exercise. And for the same reasons she specified... Swimming is hardcore exercise, easy on the joints (and believe me, they do wear out and are not designed to carry our weights while running, but in water none of that weight is felt, there fore very easy on the joints, or as Mrs Snark, who has the talent of making one word work for ten so eloquently put it... Low impact.

Keep it up and the scales will comply, in their own time;)

JB just wanted to mention, a good friend in another thread told me to focus on my breathing when starting c25k, it really seemed to help when I got further in and has helped me with some tough hikes we've been doing lately. I'm terrible about shallow breathing so every so often I take 3-5 deep breaths to make sure oxygen is getting to the muscles. Hope it helps, I love c25k and plan on starting again as soon as the weather breaks, riding the exercise bike mostly for the winter.

BFR and Mrs Snark thanks for the laughs, info and inspiration. I like turnips, too and don't eat them often enough. I plan on roasting some carrots, sweet potato and garlic, I should have picked up a turnip or two, too.

Such good advice. Thanks a million. I went to the pool, swam and did some running/jumping jacks in there, too. You are correct, there is no impact on the joints. It's a very small town and the pool is the focal point for kids and adults. It's where we go when the snow is falling, wind is howling and wind chill is -40 below zero. If you fall down out there, welp...you don't last long.

I think it might freeze the lungs. I'll stay in my own lane and swim. Whewww. I just talked myself out of running in the winter. Summer only lasts 2 months. I'll try it this summer. I can think of one place that has some sand, not much - but it's on a hill. I could do that hill, up and down. I have a bum knee from falling through the ice while playing ice hockey. The ice on the lake was rotten in places. I've babied it for years. Doc said no need for surgery but I've always hiked and used the pool.

Okey dokey. That was great, BFR and Mrs. Snark. You both seem to be natural born athletes. I really liked what Mrs. Snark told someone about saying "just" a walk. Yep. I'm not going to that anymore. Such a great analogy. It totally diminishes anything we try to do when we can't measure up to higher athletic standards. "Just" a hike at 8,000 feet, nothin' much - steep mountain ridges, loose slippery rocks. I only went for a couple of hours. I guess I could've made it into a day hike, camped out and packed my way back out the next day. Thanks again, I'm not going to say "just" anymore.

Can I just say that a popular hard core workout craze that many are doing...turn their nose up at anyone who's not swinging heavy kettle bells and rolling tractor tires. It makes me feel like I should have that manual handcar they used to have on railroads, a pump trolley and just get on their and ride the railroads. O Brother Where Art Thou (movie)...like that one. So yeah, I'm not going to discount what I can do.
No more comparisons. Y'all make an impact whether anyone ever tells you or not. Have yourself some sweet dreams.

I do believe that some of my "stalling" was the added fluid from the added exercise (as I have stated before but didn't make very clear in this post), even though there were no sore muscles. However, when I paused and then started again there was no spike in weight again, as I would have expected. If all of this truly was my body's adjusting to a different exercise program it took much longer for my body to adjust than I expected.

I really think my stand still on the scale has been a combo of a plateau and adjusting to C25K. I will start week 6 tomorrow so I would have expected things to have leveled out before now but maybe it takes this long. :?:

I've done horrid on sodium intake this weekend and expect a BIG jump on the scale tomorrow and Tuesday. Hoping to get it off quickly!

Got the morning off. Went to the gym with hubby. Was feeling good about ourselves - then got a ticket for school zone one block from the house. We knew it was school zone - we just thought it wasn't in effect yet. We usually get home from gym before 7 am. So yes - he got a ticket for going 5 miles over the zone at 7:10 am. So good mood plummeted.

Only had one can of coke all day yesterday - trying real hard to cut down on my sodas... hopefully will be able to cut them out soon. I get terrible migraines and trying to wean myself slowly ... I can do this. :)

My goal for January is to lose 5 pounds .. but to be honest I will be happy with anything as long as I don't end up heavier. I am trying to have the right mindset because that is what is key. If you don't have the right mindset it just won't happen.

Trying to stay focused ... ~Troia
