Thanks Lizzie... I hope everything is ok...

I've actually been thinking of trying to come up with a "basic" plan for the day that I could base my "menus" on... I've been thinking of working around something like this...

B: 4oz to 6oz of Protein
Fruit (some berries, or some melon, or maybe some grapefruit)

L: 4oz to 6oz of Protein
1 cup veggies
2 cups salad

D: 4oz to 6oz of Protein
1 cup veggies
2 cups salad

For "dessert" some berries with 1tsp of cream... and for snacks 1 or 2 oz of a hard cheese like chedder and/or 1 to 2oz of macadamia nuts...

And as far as fats go... Limit myself to 1 tbsp of cream a day in total for my coffee and berries and anything else... Limit myself to 1 tbsp of butter for the day for my cooked veggies and to cook with... and 1 tbsp of EVOO a day also to add to veggies and salad if I like... and 1 to 2 tbsp of salad dressing...

I just have to see where that comes out calorie wise... Since I know it will definitely be good carb wise... :)

TripSwitch 04-08-2015 02:12 PM

So I stuck to my menu "template" for lunch...

L: 4oz tuna packed in olive oil
1tbsp pesto mayo
2cups mixed salad greens
1oz grape tomatoes
1tbsp creamy ranch dressing
1cup cooked broccoli w/1tsp butter

Also I've decided to add a fiber supplement before my main meals to hopefully help with some "irregularity" issues that I've been having...

So that all comes in at 488 calories and only 9g of net carbs so far... And since I'm not feeling all that creative today I'm planning on having basically the same salad and veggies for dinner... and I'll do 6oz of grilled chicken breast for my protein...

I'm going to see if I can stay away from snacking today... even if they are "plan friendly".... I'm just going to have some tea with lemon instead...

skelley331 04-08-2015 08:03 PM

Hello everyone!

Having a great week so far, been staying around 21-22 net carbs:
today ended with 21 net carbs, 1201 calories
11% carbs
56% fat
33% protein

I'm 17lbs from a healthy bmi and I hope to lose another 3-4 lbs this week!
I love that I don't crave carbs and sweets at night now, that was my big downfall.

goodluck you all seem to be doing so good, tripswitch 15 lbs to goal, awesome, I hope to be there by Saturday!

TripSwitch 04-08-2015 10:24 PM

That's great skelley! I know for me I got a real psychological "boost" these last few days once I hit that 15lb to go mark...

So this evening I stuck to my plan for dinner and with the rest of what I ate today wound up with 1322 calories total for the day and 21g of net carbs... I did wind up eating a bit more protein, so I added some more fat to balance it out... So not as big an overall calorie deficit as I would have liked... But definitely should be good to keep me on track for at least a 1.5lb loss this week.... hopefully more... will see... :)

New to Atkins

Hi Everyone!
Been looking for a new plan to get this weight off before summer (bathing suits, boating, beach!) so ready to try Atkins. I do use MVP so I'll reset my fat, protein and carb goals. Then read these posts to figure out how to get started.
I did MRC a few years ago and lost over 35 lbs but after reaching goal-gained back the weight. Rejoined last year- lost 15 and am stuck for a couple months. Time for a new plan! :)

Hey bigdog,
I just posted on your quote on the MRC site, go to the atkins site and you will find everything there to get started, the main thing is induction which you do for two weeks and it's to stay at 20 net carbs and eating what is on the acceptable foods list, then taking carbs and subtracting fiber to get your net carbs. If you look thru this forum you will find a lot of answer too. Goodluck keep posting and asking questions. MFP has been a blessing after I changed my macros to 5% carbs, 30% protein, 65% fat. It's awesome:carrot:

I am SO excited!!! Read some of the materials last night and loaded the app on my iPhone. Thks for posting about Atkins on the MRC site- I was like - yay! This would be perfect for me :)
I have a lot of reading to do!

Crimzon 04-09-2015 11:37 AM

Skelley - are those officially Atkins ratios? I have his DANDR but haven't checked or even know if ratios are mentioned.

What is the MRC site?

Have a good day everyone!

Crimzon 04-09-2015 11:44 AM

TripSwitch - that looks like a good plan. I get derailed in the late afternoons. Good intentions to start though:

B - Eggs, butter, 1/4 small Avo, Decaf with Tbs cream.

I'll report back later with the rest.

TripSwitch 04-09-2015 12:17 PM

Hi Everyone!

Welcome bigdog! I would suggest picking up a copy of DANDR and going by that... and any questions and we'll all do our best to help...

Crimzon DANDR doesn't use ratios, but those ratios are ketogenic and they keep carbs very low...

So far I'm sticking to my menu "template"...

B: coffee w/2tsp of organic pastured half & half
4oz cottage cheese
2oz smoked salmon

L: 6oz grilled chicken
1cup cooked broccoli w/1tsp butter
2cups mixed salad greens w/2tbsp creamy ranch dressing

D: ???... but I'm seriously tempted to just do a repeat of lunch, since I just made a big batch of stuffed shells for my family AND I'm certainly not having any of those... lol... my family has been bugging me to make them... so I did... ah... the things we do out of love.. But seriously, I had absolutely no craving for them at all while I was making them... talk about a MIRACLE!!!

I'll check back in later with totals.... Have a GREAT DAY ALL!!!

TripSwitch 04-09-2015 06:01 PM

Well... All I can say is 1200 calories sure does add up fast...

So I wound up having 4oz of tuna packed in olive oil, instead of chicken breast for my protein at lunch... and since I didn't grill any chicken breast there was none leftover for my dinner protein...Oh, well... so being extremely lazy, especially after going to all that work this morning to make stuffed shells for my family which I can't eat... I decided to just grab 6oz of tofu out of the fridge and put some pesto on it and have it with broccoli and EVOO... and I broke down and snacked on 1oz of some Cabot Alpine Cheddar which I really like, but I have to be really careful with because I can easily overeat it...

So calories are at 1209 for the day and net carbs are 24g... So I really need to call it a day... I'll just keep telling myself "THE KITCHEN IS CLOSED!!!" and try to go to bed early... :)

bigdog 04-09-2015 06:42 PM

DANDR? I'm a total newbie so will have to look that up? I did Weight Watchers for 15 years, then as I got older, low carbs, high protein work and keep my energy levels up.
MRC (Metabolic Research Center) for a few years on and off - stopped working- tired of its limits, counselors and $ spent.
I'll start Monday on Atkins and in the meantime will be stalking your posts :) for info.
Dr Atkins New Diet Revolution. DANDR. I think I actually have that paperback from a few years back. Amazing amount of info online too. Woo hoo!

Crimzon:
the ratios are what tripswitch uses and it works for me and it actually is about 20 net carb, MRC is Metabolic research center where you only eat what is on their menus until maintenance then you just count calories but your limited to their menus and I couldn't stick to it. It's a good program if you can stick with it. Atkins allows more freedom. With MRC you have to drink their protein drinks thru the whole program.

Sorry... yes DANDR is Dr. Atkins New Diet Revolution... written by Dr. Atkins and published before he passed away... If you can find your old paperback definitely take a look at it... if you can't find it you can always get one from Amazon pretty cheap too... I actually bought a vintage collectable 1st edition hardcover of the original book from 1972 which I love... and I have the newer books as well which I also take a look at as well...

Look forward to having you here... :)

ETA: sorry didn't see your last post... The DANDR that you have will definitely get you started in the right direction...

TripSwitch 04-10-2015 09:40 AM

Good Morning All!

So I have a bit of a confession... Last evening I was still hungry and I forgot that "THE KITCHEN IS CLOSED!" and went in there and had a "few" spoonful's of the ricotta filling out of some of those stuffed shells that I made for my family for dinner... It was like I just couldn't help myself... Anyway it was just ricotta which only has 5g of carbs for a 1/4 cup, which is about what I had... so no real damage done... and then I decided to have a handful of macadamia nuts as well... also on "plan"... BUT I wound up taking in about 400 more calories with those "few" "little" "nibbles" (those are the words I like to use and tell myself when I do stuff like that... lol...) Anyway... it was good to see how I can so just "rationalize" when I overeat... In this case it was "Oh, it's "healthy" food and it's on "plan" so it's OK... but in the end I still have to remember that calories do matter and I have to be careful because otherwise I'm never going to reach my goal...

So yesterday's revised totals were 1600 calories and 30g of net carbs... and I'm still in ketosis... but that was very close to triggering more overeating which could have very quickly had me eating "off plan"... So I definitely have to be careful...

Tripswitch,

I have still yet to go into ketosis, I think it registers a trace but still not sure, anyway I must be burning fat because I've lost an inch off my waist and pants are getting loose! :)

Looking forward to sat am to see how much I've lost this week:)

Hi skelly, my understanding is that if you are eating at around 50g of carbs a day and under than you are most likely in ketosis... not everyone registers with the ketostix... the 20g to 30g of carbs a day is what the "nutrional ketosis" people shoot for... For me it seems ketosis works like this : It seems to keep my appetite in check = I eat less = less calories = I lose weight = I'm a happy camper :D

And congrats on the lost inches and the cloths fitting better... That's awesome! I'm having the same thing happen too, even though the scale isn't moving as fast as I would like it to for me (Ha! when is the scale ever moving fast enough for me...Lol...!) But I actually just put on a pair of jeans that had been pretty snug until just a few weeks ago... And they were actually falling down on my hips, I kept having to pull them up as I was walking around all day... It was actually getting kind of annoying... But then I thought to myself "This Is A GOOD problem to have" lol... ;)

Thanks TripSwitch,
I must be in ketosis then I've been trying to stay around 20-25 carbs a day and so far so good! Congrats on the loose jeans don' t you just love it. I put a pair of my capri jeans on that were snug and I had a muffin top lol but they fit good and hardly any muffin top now! I'm so excited! I will post my loss tomorrow after I weigh in.

Michaloula 04-10-2015 10:44 PM

Hi ya'll! I'm new here (again, lol), is it okay if I jump in? I started Atkins on Monday and so far have lost almost six pounds. I love that motivating first week! :D Happy heathy, all! I look forward to getting to know you better. :)

TripSwitch 04-11-2015 07:13 AM

Welcome Michaloula! Congrats on your first week that's great... Which Atkins plan are you doing? I've been using Atkins '72, but I also look at DANDR any NANY too... Lots of useful stuff in all of them for me...

Good Morning Everyone!

So yesterday I kept my carbs very low... 20g net and I managed to keep my calories pretty low as well... somewhere just north of 1200... AND I decided to do some "experimenting"... So here's what I did...

I really like cappuccino... but obviously I've been avoiding all that milk because of the carbs... So I went ahead and streamed and frothed some skim milk and used exactly 1oz in my coffee... Ok, but didn't quite do it for me and 2g of carbs... So for my second cup of coffee later that morning I decided to stream and froth 2% milk and use exactly 1oz... definitely better and 1g of carbs... I guess I'll have to go out and buy some whole milk now and try that too, because I'm crazy like that... Lol... Not sure what this all means for my morning coffee ritual anyways... probably should just stick to my 1tsp of cream...lol...

Next "experiment"... Decided to have just 1 egg and 3 egg whites scrambled for breakfast in an effort to keep my calories a bit lower to offset some overeating from the day before.... And to my surprise I had plenty of energy and wasn't overly hungry the rest of the day... So that was good...

Next "experiment"... And this was a big one... well for me, anyways... I decided to have some protein powder mixed with some unsweetened almond milk for my lunch... for 8g of carbs... And to my even greater surprise I was not hungry and had good energy all afternoon...

And even with all that "experimenting"... No crazy cravings... Didn't have any real strong urges to overeat the rest of the day... AND I'm still in ketosis this morning... So for me it seems to be just a matter of keeping the carbs low... Since it seems for me... Low carbs = ketosis = appetite and cravings in check = I can live with that! :)

skelley331 04-11-2015 07:37 AM

Good morning all!
Weighed in this morning and I'm down 1.6 lbs from last week, unfortunately on here they round up or down so it doesn't show but that's ok! My clothes are fitting looser as well! Goodluck to everyone.

:carrot::carrot:

Michaloula 04-11-2015 10:33 AM

TripSwitch, I'm using Atkins '72 as well. That's awesome that you were able to experiment yesterday with such success! It's always nice to be able to add new things in for variety. :)

Nice to have another Atkins '72'er here... the first week was tough... But it was nice to know I would be able to add back 5 to 8g of carbs at the end of the week... I played it safe and started with some cottage cheese like Dr. Atkins talked about in the book and then had some ricotta instead on some other days... then I was able to add some macadamia nuts and even some strawberries (with a little cream...Yum!) and still remain in ketosis... And I lost 8.2lbs the first week and 3lbs the second week!

So far today...

B: coffee (1 w/ 1oz 2% milk and 1 w/ 2tsp of half&half)
4oz cottage cheese
2oz smoked salmon
4oz fresh strawberries w/ 1tsp HWC

So that's 13g of carbs so far...

bigdog 04-11-2015 12:06 PM

Not officially starting till Monday (still reading and figuring out program). Induction phase on Atkins 40.
Using Atkins app on IPhone. Love it so far!

B. Coffee
1 TB creamer (realized I can't have my Vanilla Caramel creamer (5 g. Carbs!!) anymore so used my DH's plain creamer at 1 G. Carb
2 scrambled eggs
2 slices bacon

L: ground beef 80 lean "woked" with shredded red cabbage (will switch to green- more carbs in red...who knew?!), diced green pepper, sliced mushrooms served over romaine lettuce leafs. I am addicted to this concoction and have it daily for lunch :) make a large portion on Sunday and easy to heat and serve. Sometimes add garlic, spring onions and Rotel tomatoes. Will have to check carbs on those items.
Planning on half cup strawberries for snack.

So far 12 G carbs. Aiming for 20 G. Or 25 G.? for induction (I think).
Told my DH- no more chocolate cheesecake, key lime pie or fudge brownie ice cream. He's an Exec Chef and we co-own a seafood-rib-steak restaurant. I sample the desserts- well- USED to!! Lol!
Feel free to offer me tips, advice and send motivation!
BTW- what is Atkins '72? Sorry if I'm being an annoying newbie!

Michaloula 04-11-2015 12:57 PM

TripSwitch, those are great losses!! :)

Bigdog (love your avatar!) it's amazing some of the things that have more carbs than you'd think!

I think I figured out today's menu, so I'll go ahead and post it.

Breakfast: chia seed pudding (2T chia seeds, 1 c unsweetened vanilla almond milk, 1/2 T xylitol)

Lunch: 2 egg omelette with mushrooms, salsa and mojack cheese

Dinner: pork roast w/pepperoncinis, California style veggies and coleslaw

Net carbs: 16
Calories: 1142

If I'm hungry later, I'll add in some homemade guac and cheese "chips" for a snack.

SeeMyFeet 04-11-2015 03:07 PM

Howdy, folks! Well 11 days out and I'm down around 8lb from the maximum bloat I experienced (2 days before starting "induction"). I doodled up a weight loss chart that, hopefully, will help keep me motivated, but I will only put it up periodically because it makes my sig too big.

"induction" in air quotes because I have not been 100% compliant with any of the plans, which is one of the reasons I haven't been posting menus. I prolly should switch to another part of the forum, but familiarity with Atkins started me on the low carb kick.

Over the past 11 days, my average calories have been around 1200 and average total carbs has been 56. I've had a few cheats with wine (hence the high carbs :(, ) and nuts last night. Other than that, pretty darn good, with no packaged food at all. 2 eggs for breakfast every morning (starting to experiment with poaching, as the butter is getting to be too much); baked a turkey breast for a week's worth of protein, also tuna fish salad, lots of lettuce, and a nice sauteed veggie dish that lasted 5 servings. Using spices and herbs to add flavor.

The plan is to stay on "induction", with the goal of no cheats, until at least 10 more lbs are off, then decide what to do next.

TripSwitch 04-11-2015 03:26 PM

Thanks Michalcoula....

Bigdog Atkins '72 is the original "diet"... that was the year the original book was published... It basically starts off at what is essentially "zero" carbs... Just 2 small salads a day to get you into ketosis very quickly and then each week you can add 5 to 8g of carbs a day... It's flexible, you can decide what you add back... You just have to keep it to no more than the 5 to 8g of carbs... It just counts carbs... So it's very simple... It does limit heavy cream to 4 tsp's a day and cheese to 4oz a day as well... And this is the key to all the Atkins plans eat just enough to be satisfied... the fat and the protein should hopefully prevent you from overdoing it...

Oh! Oops... that's not the one I'm doing, then. :/ (Mom has the book and it's been a while since I've read it.) I'm sticking to 20 net carbs per day.

bigdog 04-11-2015 07:39 PM

Ok, knowledge overload! Lol. Read Jersey Girls newbie intro from 2008- very informative. Thanks! Great tips!
Been reading the 1997 paperback...
Went to library and checked out. The New ATKINS made Easy, Atkins book re: Diabetes and Atkins Age Defying Diet Revolution :) more later. Making dinner. NY Strip and steamed broccoli!

TripSwitch 04-11-2015 08:12 PM

Bigdog knowledge is power... Lol... But I hear ya... I definitely can "overload" myself with all of this sometimes...

So I love Atkins... And I'm definitely I true believer in the benefits of low carb... But I'm still sort of struggling with some overeating... I overate again today, and even though I kept the carbs in pretty good check... 32g of net carbs so far... I still ate way too much... Not sure why really... But I think the IP protocol is the way to get this under control right now... I'm coming up on almost a year now of pretty intense "dieting" and I've lost over 50lbs in that time... But I need a break from all this relentless tracking, even the carb counting is getting to me right now... :dizzy:

bigdog 04-11-2015 09:06 PM

I hear Ya Tripswitch! I got really tired of MRC so jumping over to Atkins. Excited to learn new things and in honeymoon stage :) love the active forums and motivational tips. The app is cool and easy to navigate. I like all the food choices. 50 lbs lost - that's fantastic! I lost 35 lbs a few years ago on MRC and the low carb is def the way to go!
Have you tried new foods or recipes? I always have to try new things so I don't get bored.
My DH just today has eaten fritoes, pizza, homemade pecan pie and that's after eating Steak, broccoli and field peas! I had steak and broccoli w real butter :).
Anyway it's annoying but he doesn't need to lose so....I did tell him if the pie wasn't gone by Mon am- it was going in the trash.
Really glad he works most nights. Haha

Crimzon 04-12-2015 11:43 AM

You guys are doing well and I enjoy reading your posts. Very inspiring.

That's great Crimzon... I was checking my FitBit earlier... I have the scale too, that syncs with it and it looks like I stayed the same this past week, but I'm feeling a bit bloated today, so hopefully I'll have a bit of a "whoosh" soon and the scale will start moving again...

I did my best to stay on track this past week and I know that my body is really going to "fight" me for these last 15lbs... But I'm determined... :)

Ugh. I blew it today. Impromptu family dinner at Ihop. It was crazy busy and didn't have time to figure out a good choice. :( My meals today consist of peanuts, chicken strips and fries. Back to the drawing board tomorrow! I'm going to look at menus online of some restaurants we frequent so I can make some better choices later on down the road. It sucks, too because I was down again this morning. :(

I've been in situations like that. If I order a hamburger, I eat the burger, lettuce, pickle, mustard and leave the bread. Fried chicken, I take the breading off and eat the chicken...... We went to BK today and I got the chicken Apple salad. Took the cranberries and croutons off. Grilled not crispy chicken.
If my dogs are with me - I toss the carbs to them :). They are young, lean and more active!
