I hesitate to join in at such a sad time, but I am desperate to lose weight and get my health back. I have tried Atkins before--several times--but could never stick with it very long. Too much protein for me. I don't eat processed foods and gave up the white carbs long ago, so I've come around to giving this another go.

Tomorrow will be Day 1 of induction for me. (Today doesn't count because I had cereal for breakfast.) Help with food ideas would be appreciated--I quickly grew tired of the Atkins food in the past.....can't stand bacon....

I'll also have to give up coffee (makes the Atkins headache worse), so I'm in for a rough ride next week!

:crossed:

Hi SeeMyFeet,

You mentioned too much protein & having to give up coffee :?::?::?: Have you read Dr. Atkins New Diet Revolution 2002? A lot of people have a lot of misconceptions where Atkins is concerned. Atkins is a moderate protein, high fat plan. I know a lot of people think of it as the all you can eat bacon, butter & red meat diet but, it isn't.

You may be very interested in checking out Linda's Low Carb Recipes. Those marked with an * are Induction friendly.

Unless you drink excessive amounts of coffee and the caffeine makes your blood sugar spike (which can cause cravings), you don't have to give up coffee.

You CAN do this!!

All the best to you!:)

Hi Choices,

I have searched for your post under "Carb Counters" but, have been unable to locate it. Would you be so kind as to send me a link?

Crimzon 03-30-2015 12:37 PM

Carvinmom - I'm so sorry for your deep loss - words can't express....so sorry.

Crimzon 03-30-2015 12:43 PM

Hey folks - I'd like to join this thread. I need some LC friends and some daily support. Perhaps I'll post menus. My weight fluctuates so much that I've stopped changing my "C" current weight. It's in that ballpark though. I need to check in at night rather than the mornings so that is my first goal and also to record everything at the end of the day.

SeeMyFeet - I'm starting today too!

I believe this is the link to Choices' post:

The post is on the last page. Then again, maybe it's not the post you're referring to.

I have thyroid issues as well Choices. I have lost some weight but need to lose more and find a new, lower set-point.

Hi everyone... I hope you don't mind me jumping in here, but I started Atkin's '72 two weeks ago and so far I'm down about 12lbs! The first week I stuck to level one with only 1 cup of salad greens with each lunch and dinner, no more than the 4 tsp's of heavy cream a day, and I kept the the cheese intake to about 2 to 3oz of the allowed 4oz a day... I didn't use any artificial sweetners or any sweetners for that matter and that's what I plan to continue doing for now, anyway at least... I weighed and measured everything I ate and tracked with MFP which works for me...

I was in ketosis by late into the second day (I'm using ketostix) and when the "keto flu" came on I starting having a couple of cups of chicken broth a day and I decided to take 2 multivitamins a day instead of one which seemed to help...

I wasn't very adventurous with my menu so a typical day looked this...

Breakfast- Coffee with 1 tsp cream
2 scrambled eggs made with 1 tsp cream and cooked in 1tsp butter
4oz smoked salmon
Lunch - 8oz of homemade chicken salad or tunafish salad made with 2tbsp of
mayo and 1 cup of salad greens with 2 tbsp of blue cheese or creamy
Ceasar dressing
Dinner - 8oz of chicken or fish (although I did have corned beef on St.Patricks
day!) and same amount of salad as lunch...
Snack - 2oz of cheese

I also had 2 additional cups of coffee throughout the day... both with 1tsp of cream each... Keeping my daily total to 4tsp's of HWC for the day per the rules of Atkins '72... And all of that was good for over an 8lb loss that first week! Actually, once I was in ketosis I really wasn't all that hungry and actually had to force myself to eat... And when I felt crappy, like I said I had some chicken broth and thankfully was able to take it easy and it passed...

The second week I moved to level two by adding either some cottage cheese, ricotta, or macadamia nuts each day for the additional 5g of carbs that you're allowed... and since I was able to do that and stay in ketosis and lose weight, I'm quite happy... And this week I'm adding back another 5g of carbs with cooked veggies, so some broccoli with butter sounds good and I bought some fresh asparagus which I love... Now I just have to get motivated to make some hollandaise sauce for them which I love even more! I just love this way of eating! :)

Crimzon 03-30-2015 04:39 PM

Hi TripSwitch - that is great progress. I just jumped in here recently as well. I hope you keep checking back so we can all encourage each other. I'm doing the DANDR version.

Thanks! I'm actually re-reading DANDR as well... I think it will be helpful to me for maintaining... It looks like you are very close to goal, Congrats!

I was doing low fat/ high carb and even though I was doing very well and losing pretty consistently... I just knew it was something that I wasn't going to stick with... I'd much rather eat low carb with a moderate amount of protein, and plenty of good fat! I just find it so much more satisfying...Not to mention delicious!

SeeMyFeet 03-30-2015 11:39 PM

Oh goody! Glad to be in with two new starters, Crimzon and Tripswitch! 12lb is great! The first time I tried Atkins, I lost 18 in 2 weeks, but now, I too, have low thyroid. Not terribly low, but it will be interesting to see how things go this time around. I’ve also been low on VitD, and boy could I tell, because I was craving milk…..and I don’t like milk!

SooOOOoooo today was Day 1
B: cup of coffee & h/h, egg yolks with mayo, S&P
And another cup of coffee that I nursed until noon
L: salmon with lettuce
S: bit of leftover chicken
D: tuna w/ mayo & pickles and lettuce

Did pretty well with drinking water. Gotta keep hydrated...living in dread fear of that headache.....And remember to brush my teeth at work--Water is not a good chaser for coffee!......And I remembered my vitD!

only 680 calories and 23g total carbs. ....so far, so good.... I also learned that it is not possible to inhale a grape from 3 feet away, so that's good, too.

TripSwitch 03-31-2015 08:15 AM

Thanks SeeMyFeet and congrats on day 1... I know those first few days can be tough... I've just begun my 3rd week and I think I'm finally starting to feel like I'm "stabilizing"... Although I'm still just not hungry in the morning which I had hoped would have changed by now, especially since I'm no longer eating at night or snacking... Thankfully with Atkins '72 I can have a half cup of cottage cheese with 5g of carbs a day now if I like, so I'm going to give that a try this morning and take it from there... I hope everyone here is having a great day!

TripSwitch 03-31-2015 02:12 PM

So my day so far...

B: coffee w/1tsp HWC and 4oz of cottage cheese... so 5g of carbs there...

L: 2 cups of salad greens, 1oz of grape tomatoes, 1tbsp Caesar dressing, 0.5oz shaved Parmesan, and 4oz of chicken breast with 1tsp of EVOO...

So I'm at a total of 12g of carbs, 500 calories, and pretty good ratios of protein to fat so far...

So I've been feeling a bit off today and on top of that my back is really bothering me for some reason... and it's snowing here AGAIN!... anyway, I did my best to stick to plan, so here is what I had which is going to have to count as my "dinner"...

Earl Grey tea w/1tsp HWC
4oz chicken breast with 1tbsp olive oil mayo
2 slices of extra sharp cheddar cheese
3oz pink grapefruit
1oz macadamia nuts
1/4 cup ricotta

So 775 calories in total... and 16g of carbs... So I'm at 1275 calories so far for the day and 28g of carbs... If I get hungry again I can always have some chicken broth and that still brings me in under 30g of carbs for the day.

SeeMyFeet 03-31-2015 10:40 PM

don't feel like typing. Here's my daily tally from the spreadsheet:

Cals carbs
30 HH w/coffee 1.2
30 .. HH w/coffee... 1.2
144 . eggs 2 ........... 1.2
35 ....1 Tmayo oo ..... 2
4...... 1t muatard ......1
20.... lettuce 1/4 .......4
100... egg yolk ....... 1.2
125... tuna, 6oz
10 .....6 picl;es .......... 5
120 ... avocado, 1/3 ...4
16 .....lemon juice,2T... 6
150 .. chicken pieces
50 .....butter
794...... total............ 26.8
Miracle of miracles.....major drop on the scale this am! I had such trouble sleeping, first cold, then hot, aches and pains... and did not have as much water today, so hopefully the scale won't take it back! So day 2 went pretty well, but any joy in that was taken away by one look in the mirror. Ugh. So much work to do!

....keep your snow, Trip!

TripSwitch 04-01-2015 09:40 AM

Good Morning All!

Hope everyone had a good day yesterday... mine turned out to be pretty OK, even though I had a few minor issues... my back pain seems to be better today, but I made an app. with the doctor this afternoon so I'm going to keep it anyway... and they usually weigh everyone so I'll be curious to see how much Ive lost since I was last there...

So I've been telling myself I really need to start eating breakfast regularly, which I really want to do, but I guess all the years of not doing it have really made it hard... And also I regularly go to Mass on Wed but it's not till noon and I don't eat before receiving communion... so I won't be eating this morning... but I've decided that I'll have some broth... I'll talk with the Priest about it, but I'm sure it will be OK...

I actually asked to switch to the gluten free hosts that they have available a few weeks ago, because at my Church one of the Priests actually likes to make homemade communion "bread"... So I asked what was in it and lo and behold, SUGAR, FLOUR, eggs, and MOLASSES, etc... SO it was no wonder that after Church I wanted to run to nearest bakery and buy a big birthday cake even though it was not my birthday, nor anyway near it... lol...

Actually, it was good to see how just that little bite of what I like to now call the "Communion Cookie" really set me off with the cravings for sugar... I mean WOW!... Anyway... now I just have the gluten free host and my big dilemma and the "Communion Crisis" have been averted... lol... Thank God!

SeeMyFeet 04-01-2015 11:19 PM

Wow, that some sugar trigger, Trip! I actually don't have much of a sweet tooth, but do like things like dates....salivating at the thought! (good thing I don't have any in the house!)

So today:
B: 2 eggs L: salmon with lettuce S: tuna salad w/ lettuce and avocado D: mushrooms sauteed w/ butter and sesame oil

987 calories and 41 total carbs. Dinner was late, so braced for a disappointing weigh in tomorrow. Plus I didn't have much water. Today's weigh in was pretty much the same as yesterday, yay!

...so day 3 went ok....no headache...tired, but working a lot....not too fuzzy-headed....slept a little more, but not much better....wish I had a magic wand....

tabbylady 04-01-2015 11:50 PM

I am new but wanna jump full force into this site/ group.

Breakfast- none (I slept in first day off)
Lunch- 1/2 green beans fresh, 1/3 of broccoli and 2 chicken on a sticks.
Dinner- a turkey sandwich with lettuce, tomato and light mayo on half a crescent bun.

Didn't get to go to the gym today, but played basketball for about an hour with my cousin (shes 10...wish I had that energy) About to head to bedtime yogo before sleep. :)

TripSwitch 04-02-2015 05:11 AM

Welcome tabbylady! the more the merrier...

Yes SeeMyFeet it sure was quite a trigger... but I'm actually pretty grateful that I got to see how such a little thing could really set me off, so now I know at least... and it's funny you just mentioned dates, because I was just thinking that they might be ok for me as a treat when I get to maintaince... But I've already got a bar of 85% dark chocolate stashed away for that... lol... Good to hear you're doing ok at day 3... I just now in my 3rd week feel like I'm starting to "stabilize"

So yesterday was a bit off because I wound up not eating to late in the day because of Mass and my Dr.'s app.... but here it is...

Morning: coffee w/1tsp HWC, 1cup of broth, and then a cup of tea w/1tsp HWC a little bit later in the morning

Lunch: 1 gluten free communion wafer... 1 calorie and 1 carb... It's actually listed on MyFitnessPal, which I find pretty amusing... so I guess you really can track everything if you want...lol...

Dinner: 1cup broth, 3oz tofu, 1tbsp EVOO, 6oz chicken breast, 2tbsp olive oil mayo, 2cups steamed brocoli, 2tsp butter

Snack: 2oz macadamia nuts

So grand totals for the day... 1185 calories 20g carbs total (11g of net carbs) and all my macro's looked pretty good and I wound up feeling pretty good too so I'm happy... :)

TripSwitch 04-02-2015 04:09 PM

Good afternoon all!

Hope everyone is having a good day so far... I'm having a pretty good day here... had to fast for some blood work this morning, so NO coffee first thing which was a bit tough, especially since I get up very early... Decided to hit the grocery store before the doc's office at 8am which was great since there was literally no one shopping at that hour... So I thought with all that running around and the fact that I hadn't eaten since 8pm last night I would have been ravenous, but I wasn't (I definitely think the ketosis is doing the trick for my appetite) so I just had my much wanted coffee and some cottage cheese... Then had to run to the vet with 2 of our cats which is always a big production... between getting them into their carriers and the car ride... Let's just say my cats are really not into it...lol... But we got there and back with no disasters thank God... Anyway here is how my food is looking so far...

B: coffee w/2tsp organic pastured raised half&half (my grocery store was out of the same HWC version I like and I didn't have time to run all over God's green earth to find it at 7am this morning all so I could save 1g of carbs in my coffee...lol... and since I just wasn't hungry I just decided to have 4oz of cottage cheese before dashing back out to the vet's.

L: Baby lettuces and radicchio, 1oz grape tomatoes, 0.5oz shaved parmesan, Caesar dressing, 7oz chicken breast (I should have cut 1oz off of it when I weighed it and given it to my poor dog, but I'm just so lazy sometimes... I swear...) and 1tbsp of really delicious EVOO... Yum!

Decided to sit outside after lunch, because it finally is beautiful and sunny here today... YAY!... and enjoy another coffee w/1tsp of the half&half... which I guess I might as well use since I have it until I get some more of the HWC that I like... seriously... Talk about first world problems.... Lol...

And so now even though I've got a ton of food in the house... I still have no idea what I'm going to make my family for dinner tonight... :)

SeeMyFeet 04-03-2015 12:28 AM

I dunno ladies....Day 4....I was soooo tired at work today...and bothered by RA.

But I made it through ok...724 calories and 15 total carbs
B: coffee and eggs w/ tumeric
L: tuna salad w/ mayo&pickles
D: scallops sauteed in butter
3 coffees total and not nearly enough water

TripSwitch 04-03-2015 08:03 AM

So yesterday I wound up coming in at around 1400 calories and 15g's of carbs and I'm very happy with that... that carb level has me in ketosis which seems to be keeping my hunger and cravings in pretty good check... and that calorie level is good for a deficit where I'll be losing well over a 1lb a week...

SeeMyFeet... Please don't take this the wrong way... But at that calorie level the only thing I'd be seeing is my bedroom ceiling, because I wouldn't have the engergy to get out of bed... lol... But seriously why are you eating so few calories? I didn't see any salad veggies in that menu, but even that wouldn't bring up that low calorie level by much, so even if you where getting enough protein you would still need to add more fat...

Not sure how you're tracking calories... I'm using MFP and I set it to 1200 calories a day and set the macro's to 5% carbs/ 30%protein / 65%fat... Most days I go over calorie wise, but I do my best to keep my "macros" on target... the first week I was usually at 1500 to 1700 a day... Now I'm between 1100 and 1400 a day... and I was definitely eating too much protein and not enough fat, which is why I felt so sluggish... for me too few calories and even though I'm in ketosis I'm hungry and don't feel good... too much protein and I'm sluggish and don't feel good... Not enough salad and foundation veggies and I'm "irregular" (if you know what I mean...lol...) and I definitely don't feel good... So for me getting the right amount of fat "dialed in" so to speak seems to be the key to feeling good and having really good energy, while still losing weight with this way of eating for me...

TripSwitch 04-03-2015 10:08 AM

So Good Morning All!

So today is Good Friday which means it's a "fast" day for me... Although technically that means I'm allowed a light breakfast, one meal, and one "half" meal during the course of the day... So for my "light" breakfast in addition to my usual coffee I had 3oz of pink grapefruit and 4oz of cottage cheese for 12g of carbs... which is fine because I'll be eating rather light the rest of the day...

I will abstain from meat today as well... So for my one meal I'm planning a homemade egg drop soup made with vegetable broth, and some lightly "wilted" spinach with tofu and probably some really good EVOO... I might have a small salad too... as for my "half" meal, not really sure about that yet... Might have some cheese or some macadamia nuts or both... lol... depending on how I feel... and of course I plan on weighing and measuring, and tracking it as well... so I'll come and post later...

Have a great day everyone... :)

TripSwitch 04-03-2015 08:16 PM

So I wound up at 1158 calories and 26g of net carbs by eating what I planned from the previous post... So I'm happy with that...

TripSwitch 04-04-2015 03:48 PM

Still struggling with trying to eat breakfast on a regular basis... not because I think it's necessary or anything like that... I just seem to feel better when I do... anyway needless to say I didn't eat breakfast this morning, but I did have a nice lunch...

So far for today... calories are at 585 and carbs are at 13g

skelley331 04-04-2015 04:37 PM

I too am not a breakfast eater during the week so that's why I drink the shake, now on the weekends I love breakfast:

Today when I weighed in I'm down 3.4 lbs, so far i'm at 14 net carbs and that includes my dinner so having a good day. Calories 1,172

WoW! down 3.4lbs. is AWESOME!!! Congrats!

TripSwitch 04-05-2015 02:19 PM

So yesterday I wound up coming in at 1145 calories and 20g of net carbs on the dot... And I even did a little experimenting and had some shirataki "spaghetti" with carbona sauce with my dinner and I'm still in ketosis... and it didn't cause any cravings... Truth be told... I'm not really missing pasta... Thank God!

skelley331 04-05-2015 06:29 PM

Yesterday I ended up with 1395 calories, but 58 carbs ugh but I'm still ok, one day at a time.
Today I did pretty well with easter day, 980 calories and 32 carbs, Monday will be better, weekends are hard for me but I get better every day, I'm staying focused.

:carrot:

TripSwitch 04-05-2015 08:55 PM

Skelley good to see that you didn't let one day of coming in higher with the carbs derail you and you got right back on track... hope it didn't cause any cravings...

I had a really lovely Easter... Got up very, very early for the Easter Vigil and service... just stuck with coffee and cream and politely said "No Thank You" to all the very well meaning food pushers at Church... Lol... and since I was there for about 6 hours it was a bit rough at a few points, but actually for the most part I felt pretty good... And a very nice women who I guess I haven't seen in awhile gasped when she saw me and practically shrieked "Oh My God! you're lost so much weight! You look great!" which made me feel pretty good... Came home and ate very reasonably, stayed on plan... had some macadamia nuts and a piece of some cheddar to keep my appetite under control and had a lovely dinner with my family...

So for today I came in at 1265 calories total and exactly 20g of net carbs for the second day in a row which I did not plan, but was a nice coincidence... :)

TripSwitch 04-06-2015 01:24 PM

Good Day Everyone!

I finally got around to eating breakfast this morning and I feel so much better...

Decided to have 2 scrambled eggs with a 1tsp of cream, cooked in 1tsp of butter, a few Applegate turkey breakfast sausages, and 4oz of cottage cheese and 4oz of some fresh strawberries... And of course coffee with 1tsp of cream...

So far that puts me at 480 calories and 15g of net carbs... Not bad... and I'm planning to have a small steak tonight with a nice salad and some asparagus, so that will keep me in the 20 to 30g of net carbs neighborhood... no problem

SeeMyFeet 04-06-2015 01:57 PM

Well, I finished one week of induction. Weekly average for calories was a little under 1200 with an average of around 50 total carbs per day. I had a few items not strictly on the list...endured an RA flare-up and the ensuing exhaustion that accompanies it....but .stuck to it pretty well. I feel FAR less bloated and slacks fit better. This week, I lost around 5 lbs. I expected to lose more, given how bloated I felt and how much i have lost in previous attempts at atkins. But I still have joint swelling and I became low thyroid since the last time so it's prolly not a fair comparison. I'm gonna go for another week of induction and try for no cheats. AND more water.

Wow Trip, you have lost a lot.

Congrats SeeMyFeet! 5lbs lost is great! I started back on Atkins on 3/16/15 and I weighed 182 and now I'm down to around 168 which I'm very happy with... But now the hard part begins... The last 15lbs! But I'm determined!

So today I stuck to my plan from my previous post and ate exactly what I planned... Total calories came in at 1230 and 24g of net carbs and I'm very happy with that...

So far today... Calories are at 790 and net carbs are at 22g

Pretty much had the same breakfast as yesterday... except I decided to omit the cream and not cook my scrambled eggs in the 1 tsp of butter... and I added 2 egg whites to the eggs which made up the 50 calorie deficit created by that omission...

For lunch I wanted something easy... So I had a salad of 4oz of organic fresh baby spinach, 1oz grape tomatoes, 4oz tofu, and 2tbsp creamy ranch dressing

For dinner I'm planning on having 6oz of cod and 4oz of asparagus with 1tsp of butter, some lemon and a salad... for "dessert" 2oz of fresh strawberries with 1tsp of cream

For snacks 1oz of chedder and 1oz of macadamia nuts if I like... We'll see...

Stuck to my plan, but skipped the macadamia nuts... So total calories came in at 1248 and net carbs at 31g... I can live with that :)

Good morning all!

So I'm within 15lbs of a "normal" BMI (I know, I know... people have all sorts of issues with it... myself included, but the range for me is a good ball park... so that's what I'm shooting for...) And now that I'm so close I expect that my weight loss is really going to slow down... So yesterday I started to think about doing IP to get to goal... I don't know... It's just a thought at this point...

So today I'm feeling a bit sluggish and not hungry... I know I should probably eat breakfast, but I'm just not into it... So I think I'll just have some tea with cream...

I'll be back later to post totals and my carb count...

You guys are doing well - can't say the same here. I went totally off the rails last night - got some bad news. Today is a new day.

I appreciate you posting your menus Trip.
