The Longevity Diet

The Longevity Diet was developed by anti-aging nutrition experts Lisa Walford and Brian Delaney. It is based on the principle that reducing calorie intake can increase your life span. Calorie restriction is the only method scientifically proven for this purpose, as well as the reduction of cholesterol and blood pressure levels, and loss of excess body fat.

The Premise

The diet follows a simple concept – eat fewer calories by selecting foods that have a high concentration of vitamins and minerals. The idea is to attain all the recommended levels of intake of key nutrients while reducing your intake of calories to approximately 20% below normal amounts. The idea is not just to reduce food intake per se, but to consume fewer empty calories. You have to eat only the food that supplies the maximum nutrition at minimum calories.

The Longevity Diet

The Longevity Diet asks that you remember some basic things. For the first week, double the consumption level of vegetables and hold the cheese and milk. For Week 2, go easy on the meat and eat more nuts. The following week, eat more fish and no white foods – basically, no sugar and flour. On the final week, eat a lot of fruits and avoid food with chemical ingredients such as concentrated sugar, high fructose corn syrup and anything else that you do not understand in the ingredients list. There are many recommended menus available online – you can look through them closely, and select those that will best fit your lifestyle.

Red wine contains resveratrol, a compound that several plants produce naturally in defense against pathogens. Research shows that resveratrol can slow the aging process, and therefore red wine is allowed in this diet. Coffee and chocolate are also allowed in this diet. The key, of course, is to have them in moderation.

What to Get Excited Over

An obvious benefit of the diet, as mentioned, is the increase in life span. It is also known to reduce the risk of developing chronic diseases such as cancer, diabetes and heart disease, mostly because you avoid foods that cause them. The Longevity Diet can also be easily adapted to fit your personal food preferences and lifestyle, as long as you work within the recommended diet plan.

Things to Consider

There are advantages and disadvantages to the Longevity Diet. It’s not recommended for those with history of eating disorders. Those under this diet plan have also complained of experiencing hunger, especially in the first few days on the plan. Another common aspect of this diet that scares some people away is that you have to count calories, tediously prepare food and strictly monitor your food intake, a feat that not many people have the luxury of doing due to their busy schedules. 

The Verdict

In the end, it is up to you to decide whether this diet is for you or not. If your primary goal is to lose weight, this may not be the program for you, although you can and will most likely lose weight in this program. If your goal is to live a long, healthy life, then the Longevity Diet is for you.
