The Instinct Diet

The Instinct Diet is based on over two decades of clinical research performed by Susan Roberts, PhD, a Tufts University researcher. The Premise

Susan Roberts, PhD, inventor of the Instinct Diet, believes that by making simple lifestyle changes, you can control your unhealthy food cravings and learn healthy eating habits. The Instinct Diet is a scientifically and medically sound and safe diet plan. Most medical experts approve of its principals.
The Instinct Diet outlines five basic food instincts, and provides strategies for coping with them (as outlined in the book, The Instinct Diet, by Susan Roberts PhD). The five food instincts Roberts identifies are:
The tendency to eat more when we have more food choices.
The tendency to eat more high calorie foods.
The tendency to eat because food is available.
The tendency to eat familiar foods for emotional comfort.
The need to eat to satisfy hunger pains.
The Instinct Diet has three stages. Stage One helps you prepare for the diet with two weeks of hunger suppressing foods. Stage Two lasts six weeks, and during this stage you’ll be allowed a wider variety of foods; you’ll also have the chance to learn healthier eating habits. Stage Three helps you learn how to keep the weight off forever.

The Diet

The Instinct Diet limits your calorie consumption based on your initial weight, to either 1200 (if you weigh less than 160 pounds) or 1600 (if you weigh more than 160 pounds). The Instinct Diet has three stages. Stage One helps you prepare for the diet by eating a limited menu for two weeks. Stage Two lasts six weeks, and during this phase you’ll eat a wider (but still limited) variety of foods to undo unhealthy habits. In Stage Three, you’ll begin a healthy diet and moderate exercise program.

What to Get Excited Over

The Instinct Diet is based on extensive scientific research. The Instinct Diet suppresses your cravings by restricting you to a limited variety of foods, but still allows for occasional 100 calorie snacks so that you don’t feel deprived. The Instinct Diet doesn’t require you to exercise during Stages One and Two, though Stage Three involves incorporating 30 minutes of moderate exercise into your daily lifestyle.

Things to Consider

You’ll need to take calcium supplements, multivitamins and fish oil supplements. You could get bored, especially in Stage One, with the limited menus allowed.
