The Instinct Diet is based on over two decades of clinical research performed by Susan Roberts, PhD, a Tufts University researcher. The Instinct Diet seeks to eliminate the problems that plague most dieters (food cravings, feelings of deprivation) to effect permanent weight loss. Let’s review the Instinct Diet.
Susan Roberts, PhD, inventor of the Instinct Diet, believes that by making simple lifestyle changes, you can learn healthy eating habits and achieve long term weight loss. The Instinct Diet is a medically sound diet plan.
The Instinct Diet outlines five food instincts, and provides strategies for coping with them in the book, The Instinct Diet, by Susan Roberts PhD. The five food instincts are:
- The instinct to eat more when a variety of foods are available.
- The instinct to eat high calorie foods.
- The instinct to eat because food is available.
- The instinct to eat familiar foods for emotional comfort.
- The instinct to eat when hungry.
The Instinct Diet limits your calorie consumption based on your initial weight, to either 1200 (if you weigh less than 160 pounds) or 1600 (if you weigh more than 160 pounds). The Instinct Diet has three stages. Stage One helps you prepare for the diet by eating a limited menu for two weeks. Stage Two lasts six weeks, and during this phase you’ll eat a wider (but still limited) variety of foods to undo unhealthy habits. In Stage Three, you’ll begin a healthy diet and moderate exercise program.
What to Get Excited Over
The Instinct Diet is based on extensive scientific research. The Instinct Diet suppresses your cravings by restricting you to a limited variety of foods, but still allows for occasional 100 calorie snacks so that you don’t feel deprived. The Instinct Diet doesn’t require you to exercise during Stages One and Two, though Stage Three involves incorporating 30 minutes of moderate exercise into your daily lifestyle.
Things to Consider
You’ll need to take calcium supplements, multivitamins and fish oil supplements. You could get bored, especially in Stage One, with the limited menus allowed.
The Instinct Diet is a safe and effective diet for anyone seeking long term weight loss.
