The hype surrounding the Negative Calorie Diet generated from an eBook that professed you could lose 14 pounds in a week.  This eating regimen has been popular since the 1990’s, and it is one of the few diets on the market that claims you can drop weight by consuming more food.

The Premise: This diet was developed in compliance with the thermic effect, which testifies that each food obliges some energy to be digested.  According to the Negative Calorie diet, certain foods evoke a negative caloric effect.  This means that more calories are burned during the digestion process than the food is worth, thus resulting in negative calories.  For example, a stick of celery might contain 5 calories, but you could burn up to 95 calories just by chewing and digesting this high cellulose food.  Therefore, the more negative calorie foods you eat, the more calories you will burn, and the outcome of this mass consumption is rapid weight loss.

Things To Consider: While fruits and vegetables are extremely healthy and essential to a well-balanced eating regimen, you cannot build a nutritious diet with these foods alone, as your body also requires carbohydrates, protein, and healthy fats.  This diet states you can lose up to two pounds in a day, while healthy weight loss constitutes losing two pounds a week.

Verdict: Not recommended!  While it is nice to believe certain foods have magical fat burning abilities, this is not a realistic notion.  You are basically starving yourself of vital nutrients, and the weight loss is a result of dramatic calorie reduction.  If you must engage in the Negative Calorie Diet, only do so for a short period of time.
