Chapped lips is a condition that can affect both children and adults, especially during the cold seasons. Having chapped lips is not only uncomfortable and painful but they can also affect your confidence when you talk to or interact with other people. Chapped lips occur when the moisture of the lips becomes depleted, resulting to excessive dryness. When not treated, chapped lips can become worse and can eventually lead to cracking and bleeding lips. Here are some ways that you can prevent chapped lips.

Don’t Lick Your Lips!

You might lick your lips if you begin to feel that they are getting fry. This is because simply licking your lips can instantly provide moisture and relief to your lips. The presence of saliva in your lips may make your lips feel hydrated temporarily but once your saliva dries off, it will actually leave your lips in a worse condition than before. This is because lips have natural oils that protect them from dryness. When you lick your lips, the saliva strips these oils away. Also, keep in mind that saliva has chemicals and enzymes that help in food digestion which can end up attacking the skin on your lips. So the next time you feel like licking your chops, remember that it will only make the problem worse.

Lip Balm Protection

To keep your lips from drying out, buy a handy lip balm that is designed to sooth dry and chapping lips. Apply it liberally when you feel your lips drying up. Petroleum jelly is also a good substitute if you don’t like the flavors of lip balms. As much as possible, you might want to buy a product that offers sun protection. Just as you wear sunscreen to protect the skin on your face and body when you go outdoors, you need to offer the same protection to the sensitive skin on your lips. Another way to protect your lips is to wear a scarf if you are going outdoors on a windy day. The harsh sun and strong winds can cause lips to chap.

Keep Hydrated

Chapped lips are not only caused by external factors like weather and temperature. They can also be a result of dehydration in your body. This is why it’s important that you drink plenty of water no matter how hot or cold it is outside. Another way to make sure that your lips remain hydrated is to apply vitamin E before you go to bed at night. This will help you wake up to a pair of smooth and hydrated lips in the morning. 

Know What to Avoid

Knowing what not to do to worsen chapped lips is just as important as knowing what to do to relieve them. For instance, smoking can dry your lips out so you might want to avoid lighting up. Eating fried and other greasy foods can also leave behind grease on your lips that can end up drying them out. Dry air can also cause lips to chap, so if you think the air inside your home tends to get dry, you might want to invest in a humidifier.
