3 Easy Ways to Commit to Long Term Exercise
Long term exercise may seem daunting. This is especially the case if you have not found an exercise type that you enjoy. Luckily, there are ways to commit to and enjoy exercising long term. Exercising with others and setting attainable goals and time limits are ways that you can keep exercising for the long term.
1. Exercise with Others
One of the challenges of committing to an exercise regimen is the feeling of loneliness. This may be particularly true for you if you are a social person who likes to be surrounded by friends and family. Going running by yourself, working out at a gym where you know no one, or exercising to a workout video at home may not be your idea of fun.
Ask a friend, coworker or relative if they would like to exercise with you on a regular basis. The key is to find an activity that you both enjoy. Another important factor is that you truly enjoy this person’s company. When you are with someone who makes you laugh or inspires you, many activities can be enjoyable. You may find that just speed walking with your exercise companion is something that you look forward to on a daily basis.
2. Set Realistic Goals
One of the challenges of sustaining an exercise program long term is feeling out of shape. You may start out motivated, but find yourself discouraged when you set out to run five miles and are only able to run a fraction of that distance. One way to keep at it is to set goals that are truly achievable.
You might start out running just half a mile. The next day, add just an extra step to that distance. Continue to increase your workout in very small increments. It feels good when you achieve a goal that you have set out for yourself. Before long, you will find yourself running the full five miles. The good thing about exercise is that your body actually becomes accustomed to it. Once you are in the groove, you will want to do it on a regular basis, long term.
3. Commit to 15 Minutes Daily
Another way to increase your commitment to long term exercise is to commit a minimum of fifteen minutes per day to your workout. Even if you are not in the mood to exercise on a particular day, knowing that you can stop at the end of fifteen minutes will push you to start. What often happens is that your body starts to become energized once you are in the middle of the workout. You will gain momentum and very likely see your daily workout through to its end.
Exercising regularly and long term will help you to feel greater energy and health. Finding people to commit to it with you, setting achievable daily goals and committing a small amount of time each day no matter what are ways that you can motivate yourself to start and sustain an exercise regimen long term.
