yay, dagmar! Hope you get a little time to relax!

jessica, thanks for the heads-up. My mom has booked us all on a Danube river cruise for next June - Budapest to Regensburg (sp?) - the only part of it we'll have to pay is the plane tickets. DS12 is going to have 2 trips to Europe in 2013 - he'll be going to France with his 7-8 grade French class, about a dozen students in all, as well. I figured I'd better start socking money away now. 2013's gonna be an expensive year, but really memorable! Thinking maybe Christmas would be about right to start looking seriously at buying tickets for next June? Yes, I like to plan way ahead too!

allison, hugs to you. First the dog, now your friend? Yikes. Wishing you strength for processing what life is throwing at you.

bargoo, that stinks about the cop. An apology won't cut it; I am sure the next step is legal action and punitive damages against whatever city it was, the maker of the cop's gun, and probably the cop's family. I mean, that's how we roll, right? Wrongful death, definitely. I shouldn't rant - I haven't heard the story and have none of the details.

151 still, but the scale had a hard time deciding between 150.5 and 151. I'm good with it - 3 days of POP and a strong outlook are going well so far.

Becky, this horrible event took place in Austin, Tx .Officers were responding to a domestic violence call , dog barked at the officer, officer felt threatened and shot and killed the dog. They were at the wrong house, the domestic violence call was for the house next door. The whole thing makes me sick. The owner of the dog said his dog was not vicious, he was just barking at a stranger on his property. I don't know about you but if a stranger is on my property I hope my dog does bark. Just hope the stranger doesn't have a gun.

Horrible situation for everyone involved, bargoo - talk about a mistake snowballing downhill. And whomever made the domestic violence call was likely forgotten in all the chaos.

Our house alarm went off a few years ago and my other dog went outside to get away from it. The alarm company couldn't get a hold of me or my DH, so they sent the police. The officer was checking the yard first and my dog started running toward him. He felt threatened but used pepper spray (thankfully). Of course, he wasn't facing a possible domestic violence call--just a possible break-in. That is sad for that family.

Chico rested well. I iced his surgical area last night and I think he liked that. He's going to work with me today so I can keep an eye on him (and because today is housekeeping day and they make him stay outside for the duration and I just can't do that to him as it's going to be like 95 today).

Allison. I hope Chico can make a complete recovery. It is so sad to see our pets in pain. My neighbors have a dog who is going blind, it is so sad, Willow is such a sweet girl. I think she is handling it better than her owners, though.

Most dogs adapt to blindness very quickly. The trick is to keep other dogs respectful of them - the blind dog can no longer read the body/facial language of the other dogs so its responses might be misinterpreted.

I have walked 5 blind dogs in my pet sitting career. I kept them on the leash as they had comfort from that and I could prevent any occurences with other dogs.

Most animals adapt to huge traumatic injury quite well , if the owners allow them to and move past feeling sorry for the animal.

Pet rant done!

Allison-- when will you get results for Chico? I'll keep my fingers crossed!!

Yes, dogs do adapt quickly! We had to amputate one of our doberman's front legs due to bone cancer and she was up and around in no time. When someone came to the door, she would run to the door barking-- let me tell you-- strangers were certainly afraid of a 3-legged barking doberman!

Congrats Dagmar on the whoosh!!

I may be planning yet another small trip. My 81 year old uncle called me last night. It was the funniest call. He was so awkward-- he said, "I don't know if you're aware, but your cousin Steve is gay". Um, yeah.... he's in his 50s and lived with his partner for years. So, kinda assumed there. Anyway, since gay marriage is now legal where they live (NY), they are planning a wedding in early June. My uncle wanted to make sure to tell me before we got the wedding invite. Now I have to figure out if I'll go myself or if anyone can join me-- dh will be in Singapore, younger dd will be studying for finals, and I'm not sure yet about older dd's grad school schedule. I've never been to a gay wedding, but I'm very happy for them.

Animals are definitely not part of the victim mentality. I have a buddy who adopted a rescue beagle. She lost a front leg during a car chase that didn't go so well - and can still catch squirrels and jump up on the couch. My friend says she is absolutely the most perfect dog in the world, and for the rest of his life, he's committed to rescuing animals that are "a front leg shy". Why? Because they don't dig. It's one of those jokes that you're kind of embarassed to laugh at ... but he's totally serious.

Michele~I should find out the results by Monday at the latest. The vet said that if he heard earlier he'd call--but he's out of town from this afternoon until Sunday. He said if the results came in his assistant would call him and then he'd call me.

So cute~when we were leaving the other vet came out (they're married). She was the one that treated Buddy when he broke his tooth and my regular vet wouldn't work on him due to his heart murmur which he developed when he got vestibular disease. She hugged me and said she really wanted to take Chico home! He's such a good dog.

So yeah, I'm hoping that whatever it is isn't malignant. I saw the xrays yesterday and the vet was right that there does not seem to be any bone involvement. But if it is malignant and they have to operate, I think they might be able to do so without losing his leg. I do know that dogs adapt easily to being 3 legged, but I prefer it not to happen.

The vet just called to check up on Chico and see how he's doing. She said they'd call as soon as they heard anything. I'll keep you posted.

Speaking of married vets. My cousin married a vet and they had 3 children of them one daughter is a vet and married to a vet. She has said she didn't know when she decided to be a vet but has never wanted to be anything else.
I have a vet on the other side of the family, too but none of his children became vets like their dad.

150.5. Me and my big ball of string are finding the path easier this week. I will update my ticker on Monday.

DS12 gets on stage with the symphony and 200 choristers and a couple opera soloists tonight for rehearsal. I'll try to snap a picture or two.

150.9, which hurt badly for a moment, even though I reminded myself I'm still on the rag and that, when I went to bed last night, I could press dents into my ankles. I'm not touching my ticker till I stop menstruating.

I thought I forgot it, but it kept bothering me through spin class. This was the 90-minute endurance spin class, held twice a month, and seemed fitting after this weigh-in. I kept thinking sadly of all the physical effort I put in, and how that doesn't mean a lot. I really messed up my metabolism by being a hundred pounds heavier for so very long. I will always have to overcompensate, unfortunately.

Allison, any news on Chico?

Dagmar, you are right about dogs not caring about their disabilities. But OTOH if we don't look out for our disabled dogs they can hurt themselves. For example, Carter shuffles his feet since his back injury. He doesn't care about it or notice it . . . until he's scraped the skin off the bottom of his paw and it's bleeding. So we do have to look out for him and make sure he doesn't hurt himself!

Since this is apparently the hormone thread, I can say that I still don't know what's going on with mine. The TOM that I thought had started only lasted half a day. I thought for sure it was just going to start up again in another day or two but nothing yet. Plus, I belatedly discovered that the condoms DH and I dug up out of a drawer somewhere expired four years ago (probably because the last time we used them was before we got married...). So, if nothing shows up by Monday I guess I'll take a pregnancy test just in case. We are still waiting for DH's genetic carrier screening lab results which should arrive next week.

My plan in life was to be a vet. Always. From as young as I can remember. I planned on going to vet school and marrying a vet. Opening a practice together and then I could work part-time when we had kids. I had quite the vision. I started working for a vet as soon as I turned 15, and applied to one college only because of its vet school program-- went in Pre-Vet. My first semester in college I became horribly sick-- mono and strep throat and was in the hospital for over a week and super weak afterwards. My grades were terrible. I didn't know enough to withdraw and my parents were no assistance. The vet school told me point-blank to choose a new major. They said that if I didn't have a 4.0 as an undergrad I wouldn't get into vet school. Period. I was devastated. I switched majors to education because I didn't know what else to do. I met dh right before the second semester of my freshman year. When he graduated, we got married (I was 20), and I left college. I then went to vet tech school and continued working for vets for another 10 years. After having my girls, I went back to college (long story) and now have my masters degree in library science and work as an elementary school librarian. I love my job but I never would have imagined doing it when I was younger.

Both of my dd's seem so focused on what they want to do in life. It will be interesting to see if they are still doing what they are planning to later in life.

I still daydream about being a vet and having my own practice with my imaginary husband! Now I just have tons of pets to satisfy my love for animals!!
