Anyone here been to Fogo de Chao? We're going tonight for a work dinner and I'm trying to come up with a strategy to keep my calories down. Any suggestions?

No suggestions, but Fogo de Chão is Brazilian like me and their food's great . At least here.

Well, you could stick to one piece of meat and salad.

I think clarabr has the right idea. And surely after all this time you know some basic strategies for eating out...

Default school reunion

I just accepted an invite (from my grade 4 boyfriend ) to the 110th reunion of my high school. This will be people from all sorts of different times in the school's history, not just my year.

They are looking for volunteers. I will take the weekend off work and go and do something there. I'm not good at small talk or standing around but if I have an activity I think I can make that work. And I will be sure to attend one social event there.

I have a closet full of nice clothes that have never been worn. I will definitely have a WARDROBE for this weekend.

And of course I'm going to get down to goal weight by May 10th .

Dagmar, sounds like a fun weekend and I bet you will be surprised how many classmates are overweight and how many men are bald.

Dagmar, sounds like a fun weekend! I totally understand how having a "job" can make one feel more comfortable, I do the same. And you get will get to dress up, always fun!

Allison, nice toy! Storage space is at a premium in my small kitchen, but if I ever invest in another slow-cooker appliance, it will be one like this and I can get rid of my rice cooker and ancient slow cooker. I do enjoy things with timers. So handy!

Saef, I understand you're frustrated but in my experience it's best to check out "the facts" of what an upset person is upset about before jumping on their bandwagon. A calm, logical argument with tangible points is heard better than one filled with emotion and few concrete details.

Cheez-its are the devil's food. Stay away! Far away.

I genuinely forgot to weigh myself this AM, but yesterday 2 of the 4 lbs of weekend bloat had vanished. Of course they weighed me at the doc's before I peed yesterday bc someone was in the bathroom. That should not be allowed. Many stresses yesterday and I did have an unplanned snack when I got home, but clung to sanity fairly well and got some walking in. Am so looking forward to yoga tonight.

Dagmar, that does sound like fun! 110th anniversary of the school - wow! Public, private, parochial? 4th grade boyfriend? Will DH be going too?

jessica, if it's like the other Brazilian places I've been, it may be worth considering it a splurge meal. The big difference is that Clarabr gets to eat the glorious happy grass-fed beef, and we get the corn/grain-fed sick stuff. What was the best part of the dinner?

Megan, they're kind of like McDonald's cheeseburgers - they're awesome until you stop and really taste them and think about what they are, and how they've been meticulously designed to appeal to the wrong part of the brain. I think they're more a metaphorical longing for the time when I didn't spend this much energy thinking about what I eat.

I was all set to enjoy a single serving of cherry fudge ice cream last night - and then realized the cherries were maraschinos. Nuts! Red #40. I had a glass of wine instead. Okay, it was two glasses, but they were equivalent in calories, and probably better for me in the long run.

That made me chuckle. I'm sorry you have such a hard time with food additives. You'd think there would be something bad for you in the Cheezits--right? Perhaps write and suggest they add a little Red #40 so you can't eat them any more!!!

I'm going to dinner tonight. It's going to be a bit stressful. We were invited by this couple that are clients of ours. We built (did the glass) on their house last year and somehow someone broke one of the glass stair treads this fall. We have ordered a replacement, but because it's from an art glass studio, they are really taking their time and it was supposed to ship in January, but oops, they broke it and had to start all over (we ordered it in October). DH has been in contact with all sorts of people there practically weekly to make sure the client gets it BEFORE their big party on 3/17. It still has not shipped. Anyway, the client is happy with DH's persistence and wants to take us to dinner at their club. This is a RICH club. They said the restaurant (appropriately named the Poor House) is very casual. Um, what constitutes casual with the Bently/Mazarati/Ferrari/Rolls Royce set? I don't know what to wear!!!!!!!

On another note, I used my new toy last night to hard cook some eggs. Although I could only do a dozen at a time (they say you need to keep them separate during cooking so they don't touch and crack so I put them in some silicone muffin liners) it was really easy! One did crack, so I peeled it (didn't notice that it peeled any easier, though--and that's why I bought it), but it was perfectly cooked in just 6 minutes of pressure cooking (which in all took about 15 minutes). Since we're going to a play this Sunday and won't be back til late, I think I might plan a pressure cooked meal for Sunday dinner.

I didn't go out for a walk yesterday after giving the presentation, as I'd planned, but did pace around the house furiously. I did eat lunch too quickly, and I also consumed an extra handful of almonds because I imagined I was hungry, when what I probably felt was simply some sensation in my stomach, like digestion or nerves. Probably I would have dipped in again, but I had my appointment for a facial.

And yes, that felt good. It's nice to lie in a completely darkened room with one's legs elevated a little and warm mitts on one's hands and feet, listening to piano music. Some of the best parts of the session occurred when the ... what to call her? aesthetician? ... put something on my face, went out of the room and left me.

I need to remember this: There's nothing wrong with going off and lying down for a while.

Allison-- that dinner sounds amazing!

Dagmar-- your reunion sounds like a blast!

Saef-- glad you enjoyed your facial.

Crazy day again ahead for me. I have to set up for the bookfair which I usually do when I have no classes. But tomorrow is a teacher work day and Friday a school holiday, so I have to set up today. I also have 8 Kindergarten classes coming for a story and to check out books. So I will bounce back and forth between the kids and the volunteers trying to set up. It should give me quite a headache by the end of the day. Wish me luck..... hopefully I will make it to the gym tonight to unwind....

Jessica, Is Fogo the type of rest where they come around with various meat options, ready to carve? I LOVE that food. (been once, would love to go again) Sticking to one meat would be very hard.

Allison- keep us in the p.c. loop curious minds want to know-

girls, you gave me such a lovely welcome, made me smile and then smile some more I miss you all!

Jay, I know the basics but I have a hard time with all-you-can-eat type restaurants!

Kitty, yes, you have a little card and when you turn it green side up they just keep coming with meat after meat.

Anyway, it was yummy, but I totally failed to keep my calories down. I just cannot resist that sort of temptation. This is why I usually keep on track by limiting myself to one splurge meal per week. In any case I did okay with salad, only half a glass of wine, and then a smallish portion of meat (total meat probably equivalent of a smallish steak). But, I failed when it came to the side dishes and bread, and I couldn't stop myself from ordering dessert (papaya cream, kind of like a papaya milkshake). Up 1lb this morning. Sigh.

jessica, I'd call a pound a rousing success, frankly! Any restaurant is likely to cause that - it's "different". It sounds like you were able to enjoy it without freaking out, and will rip that extra pound off in no time. Great job!
