Star 05-03-2005 09:52 AM

Julie - I'm partial to Urban Cowboy becuz I lived in Houston for 16 years...... and I have taken a turn or two on the mechanical bull......lol

Startin off slow

I just started my diet and exercise last week so I'm starting slow. I actually bought an XBox game called Yourself!Fitness that is like a workout video except it varies the routines each time you do it and slowly increases the intensity. I'm doing it 5 times a week for 15 minutes for now and then when I get a little more into it I will move up to 30 and maybe 45 at some point. The gym is too much so I figured this would be something to try for exercise. :hyper:

katkick 05-03-2005 08:53 PM

I just started - Phase 1 - my problem is not having time to fit in exercise - how much and what type is a minimum that MIGHT actually work?

buttonsinabox 05-04-2005 08:42 AM

I don't go to a gym, I have a treadmill that I can't seem to get on.. but I do bodyflex and oxycise and even though my weight seems to be stuck at the moment the inches are coming off... I have an older tape of bodyflex that im doing and it takes 18min and the oxycise takes about 15min... I do one or the other and sometimes both.. Now I have freinds out of state that say that it can't possibly be working because all it is deep breathing and stretching.. But I'm going to go with my body and so far ive lost 5inches off my stomach and 3 off of other areas and I don't think thats all from just doing LAWL.. If nothing else I can at least make it up the stairs without being out of breath..

Welcome More Fit Chicks..............

:coffee: :tread: :cheer: :strong:

Chicks - So glad your here, it's a great place to be.....

First off - Regarding what is enuf exercise? Something is better than nothing, don't let anyone tell you otherwise.. :rollpin:

How much you have to do to increase your level of fitness depends on where you are when you start. You have to start somewhere, even if it walking around your house during commercials

The brathing tapes do work, becuz it increases the oxygen to your muscles. I'm not bragging, but I have been working out for 34 years and some of my favorite and most effective tapes are 7 - 15 minutes. It's not how long you work out it is how consistent you are. To see improvement in your body it takes time. If you are lucky you will grow to really enjoy your workouts and then it will become a habit, you'll actually feel bad when you miss a workout.

As for not having time to workout, you have to make time. For me, that is first thing in the morning before work. Which means I have to get up at 4:45 a.m. to be at the gym by 6 a.m. I workout and get ready for work there. By 8 a.m. I feel wonderful and plus my workout is done for the day

This is all JMHO, don't mean to sound like a know-it-all :blah: :blah: :blah:
Oh , the other plus is that if your on a heathy eating plan and workout routine your improved body results are much better than just doing one or the other.

Okay I'm off the soapbox

buttonsinabox 05-04-2005 10:11 AM

Your right Star... I just finished my workout and I feel GREAT!

Star 05-04-2005 10:19 AM

Way to Go............

:thanks: Buttons! Sometimes I think I'm just full of hot air :stress:

haylo921 05-04-2005 04:24 PM

Well, the elementary school I work at has asked me to be on their volleyball team, I jumped at the opportunity. Unfortunatly, it will be short lived because our first game is against the high school coaches and once you lose you are eliminated I believe, but I figure it will be good exercise for a couple of days

solocat 05-04-2005 05:39 PM

(Looking for my legwarmers):dancer:

I need to start hanging out in here more often!

buttons - I have a treadmill too and because I used to work out a lot and then had a good two years of slothdom, it was hard to start. BUT ...:tread: I am finding myself addicted to the treadmill before I get ready for work. I use an incline of varying degrees because you burn more calories in a shorter amount of time. Now I not only do it with the incline, but I find myself staying on longer, for longer distances, and at a faster rate of speed. Next step....that BowFlex of mine is going to get a whoopin'!

Melissa - my daughter in CA has that game/workout thing. Does your have a mat that you have to hit the spots that light up? I guess it plays music and then you have to keep up with the lit spots. :hyper: When she told me about it, I had all these funny visuals of my becoming twisted in one heap!

FieryRedhead 05-04-2005 08:54 PM

No thats a different game called dance dance revolution. I have that game too lol. but the one i was talking about is like aerobics sorta

Star 05-05-2005 08:50 AM

Morning Fit Chicks....

:coffee: Today was my cardio :tread: day at the gym - went real well, 45 minutes on the :tread: and 15 on eliptical.........

Cathy - You are gonna  BUT I still have a pair of legwarmers  I use to have them in every color but only kept the white ones (don't wear them though). WOW you have a BowFlex - lucky chick! My son has one that he never uses. I have alot of equipment and use to workout at home, that was until we sold our house and downsized. :( My gym had to be moved to our lake house, becuz the new place has no room. So now I had to go back to the gym.....Actually there is a small gym at our apt complex but it opens at 10 a.m. and I don't like working out after work

Tomorrow I won't be working out. It is my BIL's funeral and that is how I'll be spending my day. Some relatives will be here from out of town and I will see my first husbands relatives that we only see at funerals and weddings.

Okay Chicks - later.........

buttonsinabox 05-05-2005 10:33 AM

I did my workout this morning, it amazes me how before I did it I wanted to crawl back into bed and now that Im done Im wide awake... For those of you who don't know you can do the deep breaths through out the day and it gives you a great pick me up plus it keeps your metabolisim going :)

Cathy I know I need to jump back on the treadmill bandwagon but I think because I work in the basement all day, spending an extra hour down there on it just makes me cringe... not only that but the last time I was doing it my Husband and Son were making fun of me for not going as fast as they thought I should, so I kinda said screw it then...

Star 05-05-2005 11:12 AM

Buttons - What do you do in the basement or are you held captive down there?
Also, men think you have to workout at warp speed to see results. Guess what? They are wrong again. Actually alot of people have that misconception. To burn stored body fat you only need to work out between 55 to 65% of your maximun heart rate. If you exceed that you are burning glucose instead of fat. So next time they are making fun of you give them the facts and tell them to go back to the sofa...lol
And keep on going steady (at the right pace)

buttonsinabox 05-05-2005 11:54 AM

I feel like im being held captive.. lol I have my own printing and sign bizzness that I do out of the house and all of my stuff is down there.

Star 05-05-2005 12:54 PM

As long as you don't have shackles and chains - good for you about your business!

buttonsinabox 05-05-2005 02:54 PM

I feel shackled  now if id just start making money..

maybe going up and down the stairs all day is why I don't have a big butt..

Star 05-05-2005 02:57 PM

hey - every little bit helps.........
Becuz I sit on my butt all day is why I have to workout like a maniac.......

buttonsinabox 05-05-2005 03:00 PM

LOL if im not running up the stairs im here on the computer sitting on my butt, thats the bad part about doing graphics..

Star 05-05-2005 03:05 PM

I know I always thought it would be great to be a UPS, Fed-X or mail carrier....all that exercise.....and getting paid for it....

buttonsinabox 05-05-2005 03:18 PM

I don't know ive seen some chunky people that work at those places too

haylo921 05-05-2005 10:08 PM

Well I am the queen of exercise today. I played volleball for 2 and 1/2 :wl: hours, of course I am now sore in places that haven't been sore in a while but you know what they say no pain no gain, although I am not trying to gain anything I am trying to lose weight. HMmm, maybe they should change that slogan.

Star 05-09-2005 10:38 AM

Haylo - It does sound like an oxy-moran ( no maybe I have that wrong?) to us wannta be thin chicks. BUT it really means it you don't feel your work out, you won't see any progress. It's like when you work out and your sore the next day, it hurts but your happy becuz you know you did something.
I worked out this a.m. - did circuit training.....oh rah! Feel good, tomorrow is cardio, which to me is a walk in the park (not literally....lol) I mean I just like walking on the treadmill and the eliptical - somehow soothing and relaxing......

BermudaSlim 05-10-2005 09:26 AM

Curves

Does anyone here go to Curves. I am back on LAWL and doing it on my own this time, not going into center. I remember when I paid for the program a few years back they really did not encourage exercise, especially working out with weights. :?: I think at Curves it is circuit training so I think there will be some weights I am pretty sure? Any feed back you guys have will be helpful. :^:

Thanks

Star 05-10-2005 09:43 AM

Hey Slim -
Curves sounds like the perfect place for you! It is circuit training, but it is light weights and you work at cardio speed, all good. What you don't want to do right now is lift heavy weights, light weights are fine. So for starting out and on LAWL Curves fits the ticket.
LAWL still does not promote exercise. We were all trying to figure out why. My personal opinion is that becuz muscle weighs more than fat, you see results in your inces and not the scale and LAWL is all about the scale results.
Also, LA only allows you to work out under 5 hours per week without moving you to a higher calorie plan. For now I'm working out just under 5 hours per week so I can stay on the Gold Plan, otherwise I would workout more.
Hope this helps you alittle.

haylo921 05-10-2005 01:20 PM

Star, your are right about the saying. I sometimes like to think of things in a literal sense, jsut to be  He He, well good workouts to everyone, and keep up the hard work.

BermudaSlim 05-10-2005 02:06 PM

Star - that helps a lot thanks ;)

Star 05-10-2005 02:14 PM

Slim - Another reason we don't want to build big muscles when we still have alot of weight to lose is becuz the muscle gets big, but it is still under a layer of fat and therefore it just makes us look bigger.......I know all this becuz I'm going thru the same thing.......
hugs

haylo921 05-11-2005 05:27 PM

Exersice for today: Volleyball game ;)

solocat 05-12-2005 12:55 AM

Lots of water today and 2 miles on the treadmill with a bigger incline!

Star 05-12-2005 08:43 AM

Morning Fit Chicks!

:coffee: Funny thing about going to my gym. There are two young guys that go every morning, they do the treadmill for about 45 minutes. Well they always bring their Starbuck/Tim Horton's coffe with them on the treadmill - Rain or shine, hung-over or not :dizzy:

Solo - Great way to get pump it up a notch - with the incline :cp:

Haylo - Fun way to get the exercise in - something fun like volleyball ;)

Okay went to the gym today (cardio) :tread: Stats for fun: In 50 minutes, incline of 1.5, speed 3.9 I burned 285 calories and went 3.10 miles......it was a walk in the park, oh I mean it was a walk in the gym

We chicks ROCK :cheer:

BermudaSlim 05-12-2005 02:22 PM

Star so true about the big muscles - my daughters are home from college (junior and senior) and told me about the special they are running at curves - bring in two milk tops and get two weeks free. :cb: Now I only have to find the milk tops somewhere :flow2:

Amazing how much support I get by at least telling my family my plans. . . I used to be one of those silent exercise/dieters . . . I guess I thought if I didn't mention it no one would notice that I needed to lose weight :crossed:

I am going to stop by my local Curves Saturday for the tour and will start my exercise program hopefully that day.

I've been walking (a little) each day so hopefully they have a class for people that are really out of shape  That's ok I'll be :strong: before you know it

Star 05-12-2005 04:11 PM

Slim - Curves is great - you work at your own pace - you will do great!

solocat 05-12-2005 09:03 PM

Ok...so I come home after work and yes, the tree guys have been back to remove the stumps from the trees I had taken down (2). BUT...it now looks like a moon crater! :fr: Oh well, nothing like slinging dirt with a shovel to get a good workout!

Star 05-13-2005 08:16 AM

Solo - There are some great workouts outside a gym! In this case, in your own backyard - now get slinging....

Eager to burn more calories? Like many people, you might assume
the answer is to go faster, longer and harder with your aerobic
workouts. Yet as valuable as aerobic exercise is (to your
cardiovascular health as well as to your weight-loss efforts), it
accounts for only a fraction of the calories you expend.

The major factor in calorie burning is your lean muscle mass: the
more you have, the more calories your body uses around-the-clock.
And the best way to increase your muscle mass is to
strength-train. Even a modest weight-training workout three days
a week will have you burning calories at a faster rate.

Don't give up on the treadmill, bike, exercise class or other
cardio workouts; they are extremely important. Just realize that
when it comes to burning calories, they're only part of the
picture. You need to strength-train as well.

Avoid workout boredom. The exact same workout everyday can lead to loss of interest. For a little variety, add a new piece of equipment to your routine such as a treadmill or stationary bike. Add some free weights and tack on some strength training to your workout. Try alternating the lengths of your sessions. Why not shorten or lengthen your sessions by 15 minutes or so? You can alternate daily between shorter and longer sessions.

Morning Fit Chicks

Well I got up early (like always), drove to the gym and waited in the parking lot for the place to open :?: So It usually opens at like 5:45 to 6 a.m. So at 6:05 I got out of the car, grabbed my bag and headed for the door (where afew other regulars were waiting). We chatted for about 10 more minutes and no one showed up to open the gym.

So I decided to use my time wisely and went to WalMart ( ). Bought afew items for the new apartment. Then came to work in my workout clothes and got ready for work here :o

Guess I will have to work out twice as hard tomorrow. Hope nothing bad happend to the gym employee that usually opens up, she is pretty dependable.

No exercise this past weekend - we got to babysit for our grandbabies, one 4 month old and one 17 month old. They were awesome! There is such a big difference between being a parent and being a grandparent (besides age  ). I think that when your the parent, the kids are there but you just do everything else you have to do. When your a grandparent your world stops when the grandbabies come over and they become your world :?:

solocat 05-16-2005 09:18 AM

"No exercise this past weekend - we got to babysit for our grandbabies, one 4 month old and one 17 month old."

Wait a sec! They make these models of toddlers that are non-exerciseable for their grandparents?? :ebike: From what I recall...my kids kept me on the go at that age! Glad to hear you had such a good time Starlynn! :)

I slung dirt and tilled for the weekend...well Friday and Saturday at least. Now if only I could have stayed totally OP! :dizzy: Had more of the, "I'm too tired to eat more food" syndrome, rather than eating really horrible stuff. We'll see when I go to the COD this afternoon. I was still too tired to hop out of bed in time to do the treadmill (I think my hopper is broken  this morning).

Thanks for the article about exercise Julie...I have muscles I forgot about after this weekend! :D

Star 05-16-2005 09:23 AM

Hi

Solo - It sounds like you got plenty of exercise this weekend! Hope your hopper is feeling better by tomorrow

About the grandbabies, I will add that when the parents picked them up DH took a nap and I flopped on the sofa and zoned out into TV land ;)
