Rover-It's not hard at all to switch from haul truck to car since they both operate basically the same way. Accelerator, brakes and gear selector are all in the same position and work the same way. If I'm really tired I may try to move my car's gear forward to go into reverse from park since it is that way in the truck or I may reach for my ******er on the steering column in to slow down, but that's pretty rare since my car's cab feels completely different than the cab of a haul truck.

It's freakier switching from equipment operating to driving either a regular vehicle or a haul truck. A Cat Haul truck cab is damned near exactly the same as the cab of a Cat Scraper.

The first time I went sliding in winter in my haul truck I instinctively reached over to drop my can(the back portion of the scraper) to stop and shoved my lunch bag into the door since there were no implement controls there.

Worse than that was when I left Casper for Rock Springs after I had been training on a dozer for two days. With dozers you set your throttle speed with a hand lever and use your right foot to slow down(DEcelerator) rather than as an ACcelerator. So anyways, after training I was cruising down I-80 at about 85 miles/hour and went to pass a semi. He decided to pass the guy in front of him at the same time doing about 60 mph. I hit the gas to slow down out of habit and jumped to 95 mph. Fortunately, on the dozer the brake is at your left foot which is the clutch in a standard trans car and I hit that at the same time disengaging my trannie or that semi would have had a Subaru pancake on the back of his box.

Manual transmission comes to the rescue! :)

I feel really bad for those folks (like my daughter) who cannot drive a manual transmission.

My Dad purposefully bought a car with manual transmission a couple years before the first of us (me) would be learning to drive. Then he had to show me how to drive an automatic the night before Driver's Ed. :)

DS also got to/had to learn on a manual.

That is all I used to own. I got a new car a year ago. It is almost impossible to find manuals now. I do say, however, that in my old age, I'm enjoying an automatic.

I have to say, driving my half ton pick up with the stick shift is painful in traffic.

You have a pickup with manual? When we shopped around for our (former) F-350 diesel, I don't think we saw any manuals. We had to hunt for some of the cars we've bought with manuals including telling the dealer where the "one" was on his lot when he told us he didn't have any!

We've also ordered one car instead of selecting one off the lot. This was partly to get exactly what we wanted and partly because we wanted a special deal/program.

I'd do the snorkilin' bit... just the swimming in a pool with that many fishies is crazy :dizzy: . Have you ever been to a fish store (I think Walmarts sell fish too?) and seen the feeder goldfish tank FULL of them... that is what I am picturing 100 fish in a pool to be like. :D

WebRover 01-05-2009 09:13 PM

Well that was probably 100 fish in 30 gallons of water (333 fish per 100 gallons). 100 in a pool would have a lot less impact. More like 4000 gallons of water* or 2.5 fish per 100 gallons.

The fish I was swimming with were more like 100 right up against me with 100 right next to them, then 100 more. And they were bigger than feeder goldfish.

* 10x20 pool averaging 4 feet deep is between 4000 and 5000 gallons.

PearFreak 01-05-2009 09:23 PM

I was thinking kiddie pool. Not the small plastic one foot deep kind, but nothing near a "regular" kind of pool... most have in their backyards.

WebRover 01-05-2009 09:28 PM

OK - now I'm getting what you're visualizing. Yup - too many fish!

PearFreak 01-05-2009 09:29 PM

Ahhh, should have mentioned that a while ago. My bad. Sorry.

This story sounds fishy to me.

smells fishy to me

So here is my big goldfish story.

We used to have a carnival at church on the 4th of July. So much fun for many years until people got....yawn...tired of the same ol thing.

Anyway, one of my duties was to run the goldfish game. We put live goldfish in a kiddie pool and had the little ones fish for them with a net. Anyfish they caught they could take home. We even sold little goldfish bowls.

Well, the last year we decided to do this it was HOT! Around a 100 and ****.

About 2 o'clock I had all these little kids bringing back their non-moving fish for live ones.

Yep...the suckers baked in those little plastic bags that day.

End of that game!
