Congrats! You jumped right in there didn't you? I think that's probably good advice, to sign up ahead of time for a race. I'll have to look into any organized runs in my area.

Thank you. I really didn't like running at first, but the fact that I had signed up, and asked two 3FC friends to do it with me, meant I couldn't back out. I was really slow, but now I am more committed to training and doing even better!

My husband signed me up for a 10 mile (17 Kilometers) race in October. I used to feel I couldn't do it, but slowly I'm beginning to think maybe I could...

If I can do 10k I am sure you can do 10 miles! I had to walk a fair bit of it because of the heat, but I know much better now how to train for my half marathon. This first one was just to see if I could go the distance and see how much I liked it.

kykaree, that's impressive! I've already signed up to walk 35 miles for breast cancer in October and that's ambitious enough for me for now-- I am soooooo not into exercise! Seriously, my idea of the perfect workout session is turning the pages of a book. :-) And you didn't crash "my" thread... you just inspired me to thinhk about signing up for a race someday.

GenreGirl, thanks for the encouragement! My shins are a little sore, but nothing too terrible. Today is a walking only day and tomorrow I'm back on the track to walk/run. That'll make the end of the first week for c25k... though I think of it as a "prep week" because I couldn't sustain a full 60 seconds of running. So I figure next week will be my official week one. :-)

idest - Looks like we are doing the C25K together! I messed up my times for the first week: I thought it was 30 sec run / 60 sec walk, but reading this thread, in fact, I realized that I had goofed. So I did a prep week as well! Tonight I start the official Week 1 with 60 sec run / 90 sec walk.
So you walk on your off days? I couldn't decide whether to walk or maybe do some strength training. I am still about 20# from goal and wanted to get closer before lifting weights regularly. I've really noticed that my thighs and abs are tigtening up since I've been running/walking in intervals prior to joining this C25K program last week. Just need some arm / chest work to help balance it all out.

softballmom: I'm a little behind you... I have one more session for my "prep week," which has me starting my official 60 second week on Friday. And yes, right now I walk on my rest days (I have a walking goal of 75 miles for the month of June AND the breast cancer walk in October to train for).

But... during my walk this morning I noticed a Curves place just a mile from my apartment, so... I'm thinking about checking it out. I'd like to do something about toning up my upper body, too. My only worry there is that between the c25k and the walking I have to do I'll be crunched for time. I have a pretty demanding schedule through the end of year. I'm a software consultant and my current client is a two hour drive away. Working 8 and commuting 4 hours a day seriously eats up the time... not to mention what it does to my rear end. My only saving grace is that I work from home on Tuesdays and the occasional Friday. :-)

I've tweaked the coolrunner's program a little, I guess. I warm up walk 5 minutes, then do intervals jog 2 minutes/walk 3 minutes with 6 repeats & at least a ten minute cool down. I'm doing it twice a week, though. I've hurt myself in the past by going too fast too soon so I need to go slowly. On the alternate days I walk, minimum forty five minutes at a stretch.
It's doing wonders for reminding me I've muscle buried under there!

Before I jump into the car and go to work I wanted to report that I finished day three of my "prep week." I got myself up to running a full 45 - 60 seconds each interval, so I'm hoping I can do 60 easily in the next round. It was really humid and awful outside, even at 5:30 AM. My stopwatch (a real cheapie) has already broken and so I've been counting off the seconds in my head. I'm sure that's extremely innaccurate, though and it will be interesting to see how long I'm really jogging once I get a new one.

GenreGirl, you're so far ahead of me...! I can't imagine running for 2 minutes, right now...

When I started the walk/jog routine I was constantly eyeballing my watch- . Those 2 minutes are pretty darn long, let me tell you! It's worth it though. I really feel like I've accomplished something the days I do intervals like that.

hey, softballmom! How's it going?!

GenreGirl, I got a new stopwatch and discovered that my own counting was too slow (thankfully! I was afraid I'd find out I was too fast and wasn't running as long as I thought). And yes, I am absolutely obsessed with looking at it. it will be a real milestone (pun intended!) when I can just go out and run.
